9 hours of conservative talk to 1 hour of liberal talk?
If you ask me, that's actually a good thing . FIVE years ago it was 100 to 1.
We should be celebrating, Thom!
THANK YOU AIR AMERICA, NOVA M, DEMOCRACY NOW, HEAD ON, WHITE ROSE, and even RADIO POWER.org.
THANK YOU ATRIOS, MEDIA MATTERS, DAILY KOS, TRUTH OUT, CROOKS AND LIARS, etc. etc etc.
THANK YOU WORLK LINK TV, AND FREE SPEECH TV, and Dish Network for carrying BOTH channels!
Anybody heard of these five years ago?
9 T0 1 isn't good enough though, so we should never stop putting our views out there until its 1 to 1!
But aren't we entitled to pat ourselves on the back a little? We've come a long way baby!

By Jeffinator1June 22, 2007 - 12:26pm*Non-Press Release* - I Am Not A Candidate for President
I know how get a lot of media attention if I am going to run for president - don't announce my candidacy and say that I have no intention of running at this point in time. It is working fabulously for Michael Bloomberg, Fred Thompson, and Al Gore.
In fact, the recent NPR story by "reporter" (and Fox commentator) Mara Liasson, on the Democrats speaking at the Take Back America Conference, completely ignored many announced presidential candidates. In particular, it ignored, Mike Gravel, who got one of the biggest and most favorable responses from the audience - bigger than some of those candidates that the Snooze Media have chosen to make the front runners.
So what was NPR's next story? It was a long and detailed report about the presidential non-candidate, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Non-candidates Fred Thompson and Al Gore have also had dozens of solo stories on their non-candidacies, while candidates Dennis Kucinich, Mike Gravel, Chris Dodd and many others get ignored.
Hmmm, I have often felt that I could do a much better job than most presidential candidates. So, today I am making a major announcement - I have no intention of running for President in 2008 at this time.
I am available for interviews to discuss my non-intentions and will be making other major non-announcements at a series of non-press conferences. Please contact me as soon as possible. Contributions to my non-campaign gladly accepted.

By TOJJune 22, 2007 - 12:51pmVotes Count (Mostly)
I am of the belief that Corporate interference in our government is the root of ALL of our problems - from Iraq to healthcare to the environment and beyond.
Our votes count (when they ARE counted) to get officials into office, but they are not affecting POLICY the way they should be. Who, but pharma, benefits when Medicare cannot negotiate prices for medicine? Not the American people. Who, but Big Oil, benefits when OUR tax dollars support their massive profit margins? Not the American people.
And who basically wrote those bills? They did.
We need Publicly funded elections. We need Campaign Finance Reform and Ethics reform. We need to get corporations, who do not vote as an entity, out of government. How can we allow money have more power than a vote when deciding the policy of this nation?

I'm with you man, but how can we get our representatives who got into their current office in large part due to the massive donations they recieved from corporate interests and/or lobbying firms to champion the cause of publicly funded elections. Sure there are a few charismatic politicians (such as Bernie Sanders) who can get elected without those influences but they are in such a small minority that I don't see it happening. I fear that we are caught in a malestrom of corporate influence fighting the current to get out is going to be nigh impossible.

By cranky kateJune 22, 2007 - 12:51pmWalk the line ... Hatchet job ...
If progressive legislators walk the walk they get what Cynthia McKinney got. Cut off at the knees by the right and abandoned by the left gatekeepers.
When leader of the Senate Reid told Charlie Rose that "HIS" idea of a windfall OIL profit tax was a BAD IDEA, I was stunned. Then when Pelosi failed to get a binding timeline attached to the "EMERGENCY" war profiteering bill, my faith in the DEM PARTY was irreparably shattered.
The fact that Sanders will not entertain impeachment, at this point is irrelevant since other than Kucinich, nobody on the hill has consistently taken their oath to the constitution seriously. NOBODY!!!
So you say that's the way politics is done inside the beltway. Well then its time to have MAYORS and GOVERNORS take back their authority under FEDERALIST principles. Congress determines the NATIONAL BUDGET for education, scientific research, Medicare, subsidies for local police and prisons. So that's their leverage over state government. If the representatives fail to deliver on those stipends they will be held accountable by their local constituents. WE THE PEOPLE, the local constituents can authorize our state officials to diss ALL the feds until our representatives start walking the walk.
Let's see how real the polls are about how many WARMONGERS remain. Lets cut away the wheat from the chaff already. These wishy-washy fair-weather progressives that don't deliver on their rhetoric, must be culled.
How can 75% of the populous who are self acknowledged doves, stand idly by as nearly 65% of the GNP is allocated to PENTAGON business annually? That money cant even be audited?

September 10, 2001 - Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announces that the Pentagon has lost track of $2.3 TRILLION DOLLARS of military spending.
"On Sept. 10, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld declared war. Not on foreign terrorists, "the adversary's closer to home. It's the Pentagon bureaucracy," he said.
He said money wasted by the military poses a serious threat.
"In fact, it could be said it's a matter of life and death," he said.
Rumsfeld promised change but the next day – Sept. 11-- the world changed and in the rush to fund the war on terrorism, the war on waste seems to have been forgotten.
Just last week President Bush announced, "my 2003 budget calls for more than $48 billion in new defense spending."
More money for the Pentagon, CBS News Correspondent Vince Gonzales reports, while its own auditors admit the military cannot account for 25 percent of what it spends.
"According to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions," Rumsfeld admitted.

By oaktownbumpetteJune 22, 2007 - 2:32pmWhich came first - morality or religion?
Let me preface this with the fact that I am a Christian. When Thom posed the question (Which came first - morality or religion?) yesterday, I thought he would go further than he did. I have been thinking about it in connection with the idea that liberals think that everyone is basically good (I think that - but flawed - needs to be added to that) and conservatives think that everyone is basically bad. My conclusion is that morality came first. The liberals of the time tried to get everyone to accept that laws were a good thing. When it was hard to get people to look out for anything but their own interest, religion was born as a way to secure the common good. If people knew that they would have to answer to an omniscient being, they were more likely to do what was right than if they only had to be concerned about getting caught by other people. Therefore, religion was born out of necessity as a crutch for society to fall back on when laws were not enough. That being said, the question is - Is George W. Bush really a Christian, since he doesn't even care about getting caught by an omniscient being?
- Email this page
By msho1952June 22, 2007 - 1:07pmAgreed
Furthermore, I believe that morality precedes religion in human development. Long before a children learn about their religion, they learn to share and not to hit. I believe that later on, they associate these rights and wrongs with their deity.

By Sunshine JimJune 22, 2007 - 1:09pmFree Speech
A fundamental concept in the Constitution is free speech. Nobody wants to infringe on this right, but in fact, there are limits. The example cited all the time is that you can't yell fire in a crowded theater if there is no fire. The idea there, I believe, is that you can't unnecessarily create a panic in which someone may be harmed. Furthermore, there are laws concerning libel and slander. You can't impugn someone maliciously. Add to that, there are copyright and trademark laws that limit your right of free speech to use somebody else's free speech. So, with the right of free speech comes the responsibility to not harm others with free speech.
There are other issues with free speech. When the Supreme Court decided that money equates to free speech, they decided that some people (wealthy people) have a greater right to free speech than other (less wealthy) people. When Reagan recinded the Fairness Doctrine, he made free speech unbalanced and uncontrollable.
So my question is this: how is (some) political talk radio different from yelling fire in a crowded theater? Say someone gets on a soapbox and delivers a speech that causes a riot. The speaker would probably be arrested. But if the same speech were delivered on talk radio, it would be dismissed as free speech. Is it possible to tame talk radio without infringing on free speech?

By terrabyte1June 22, 2007 - 1:25pmCall to my Representative in Ohio
Today I called my Republican representative in Ohio. I usually call him and my Senator's a couple of times a week. Sometimes I call to express my opinion about the Iraq occupation, other times it's about the outrage of the week; sometimes it's a laundry list of everything.
Today I called to express my support for Representative Conyers and his investigation of vote caging by Karl Rove and Tim Griffin, the illegal use of RNC email accounts and Cheney's latest claim that his office is not part of the Executive Branch of government. I requested that the representative support Kucinich’s' efforts to impeach VP Cheney.
As I made my rant, the young man on the phone stifled a laugh when I got to the part about Cheney. After I was finished I asked him why he laughed. He replied that he thought Cheney's claim was baseless given his understanding of the constitution. I was startled for a second and then asked if he'd received many phone calls on this issue, given that it's not likely to be covered in the mainstream media. He replied that yes, he has taken allot of calls similar to mine and will pass my views on to the representative.
After I hung up I felt so good about that phone call. Usually I end the call wondering why I bother calling my Republican representative. Does he really listen to my progressive democrat opinions? And does he care?
I was lifted up by the moment I shared with a young man, who works for who I consider to be "the enemy". I realized that perhaps we are at long last becoming the majority in America. All of this with one simple phone call!!
Peace,
River

By CharlieNineJune 22, 2007 - 1:41pmIs that really true?
Gore was vociferously attacked by the DLC for "veering left" because his convention speech was so progressive.
Bush worked overtime to pretend to be like Gore, not the other way around. Basically, Bush tried to present an "I care for the ordinary guy" image and at the same time make Gore look more like, well, Bush. The media worked hard to echo that kind of messaging, too. When Bush lied and Gore told the truth, the media painted Gore as the liar. When Bush pretended to be "compassionate", the media didn't question it, but tried to pretend that Gore was just a patrician who thought he was better than the rest of us.
Nothing Gore said or did actually reinforced that message, but it didn't matter as long as the media told us that's what he was doing.
I've certainly had my complaints about Gore in the past, but if you go back and look at his 2000 campaign material, his videos, his speeches, the debates, what you see is a stark comparison between Bush - a lying scoundrel who couldn't defend his own policies and looked like someone who only knew how to recite his memorized talking points - and Gore, a knowledgeable, thoughtful, and passionate defender of ordinary people. Gore wanted to preserve Social Security, Bush wanted to privatize it. Gore talked about protecting the environment, Bush wanted to deregulate everything. And so on.

Kind of disappointing that Thom dismissed the definitive result of the straw poll. It showed democracy the way the US Constitution intended, not as it has been compromised by corporate media.
Scary that so many seemingly reasonable people buy the antidemocratic notion of "reasonable" or "top tier" candidates. This is pseudo-savvy realpolitik horse betting, not democracy. A candidate is electable if you vote for him or her. NO ONE may narrow your candidate choices in a democracy - not other voters, not corporate presstitutes

It should be obvious to everyone that Ralph Nader needs to explain that exorbitant Ramada bill when he was touring Nebraska. $319.67 for movies? Come on. What's going on there? According to the non-Presidential records he didn't even order shrimp or champagne. Nothing. The recountings made by the ktichen staff reveal utter frustration and dissatisfaction, as they sat around waiting for the call which never came - all the while being heckled by the bellboy who had recently earned his GED and told his father he wasn't going to drive the tractor anymore. Him sitting there flapping a ten dollar bill, which he claims was the Ralph Nader tip, through the kitchen swing-door every fifteen minutes.
Once this is resolved, I sincerely hope we will all vote for Nader's Kucinich. As it clearly needs the attention.

Thom, I have to disagree with you. I think Republicans absolutely believe government is there to help people achieve their highest potential. it's just that the group of people whose potential they care about is very narrow. I doubt Cheney would have achieved his financial potential without the government awarding him no-bid contracts.
The Republican Party is a clique party -- concerned with the welfare of a select few rather than the welfare of the entire public. The truth is, they don't believe in competition. Competition threatens their place of privilege. They believe in protecting their exclusive group, and they're more than happy to use government to do it.

Hartmann send Ann Coulter to go screaming madly bashing herself into wall after wall as she is driven into a frothing rage causing her to devour the microphone as she declares shes a fag trapped inside a womans body having realized she never did and never will make any sense in any way?!....
OR!
Will,
bewildered and virtigoed into a daze of torrets style banter by the sheer ludicrisity of Coulters side of the debate and unfathomable unwillingness to be reasonable or non-assinign, will Thom accidently call her "Toots"?!
Find out next on tomorrows show, same bat time, same bat channel. Wouldnt miss it.
