Nibbling Rights around the Edges?

or simply blatantly ignored?

What happened in Oaxaca? New Orleans?
What happened in Seattle? Miami?
What happened in Montebello? Cancún ?

do you know? well, if you do, why are we haggling the things that the MSM election coverage is throwing to us like dogs?

because our Voices are being eroded, not just in the MEDIA, but IN OUR LIVES.

& maybe we should be talking about it.
are we concerned enough about our diminishing *freedoms*, *privacy & right to peaceful assembly?

Mexico Wants Off Torture List Mexico's ambassador thinks his country will be removed from DFAIT's torture manual, a move critics say would place politics before human rights.

Canada and Mexico have seen their relationship grow stronger since the Conservatives came to power in January 2006. Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Prime Minister Stephen Harper have had several bilateral meetings, including a weekend together this past August. As well, dialogue between the Canadian and Mexican bureaucracies, militaries and business communities have picked up.

But torture does remain a problem. It is so prevalent that the U.S. State Department's travel advisory website includes a warning for Americans visiting Mexico.

"Mexican police regularly obtain information through torture and prosecutors use this evidence in courts," the website reads. "The Mexican Constitution and the law prohibit torture, and Mexico is party to several international anti-torture conventions, but courts continue to admit as evidence confessions extracted under torture.

"Authorities rarely punish officials for torture, which continues to occur in large part because confessions are the primary evidence in many criminal convictions. U.S. citizens have been brutalized, beaten, and even raped while in police custody."

The website adds that since the beginning of 2002, 21 Americans have died in Mexican prisons.

So tell me, after some AFL-CIO membership discussed shutting down ports to support abused Seattle WTO protesters, how many years did it take before corporatists & Bush outsourced the FUNCTION & SECURITY of 22 US Ports?

ask yourself: why do people call the SPP "NAFTA on steroids"?

New shotgun Taser coming, safety committee told
Coming soon to a police force near you: the Taser shotgun, capable of firing a debilitating electronic zap from 20 metres – twice the reach of current 50,000-volt stun guns.

Taser International chairman Tom Smith described the new weapon as he took tough questions Wednesday from MPs studying the safety of his company's devices.

Taser shotguns are being tested in the U.S. and will likely be available by next year, he said. Police forces all over the world, including Canada, have expressed interest.

What's with Senator Bernie

What's with Senator Bernie Sanders?  Why do contemporary legislators like Sanders go to The Hill and CHANGE?  What happens to them so that they interpret civil behavior and the rules of Congress (or Roberts Rules of Order or whatever) as more important than and incompatible with living within the LAW itself, specifically abiding by the Constitution by UPHOLDING the Constitution and vigorously defending the Constitution through the avenues provided by the Constitution, for example, IMPEACHMENT!

Sen. Sanders SOUNDS very senatorial, indeed. But I could care less about this IMAGE STUFF;  that's largely TV Land casting stereotype stuff; image and role playing are meaningless in the absence of substance and substantive action.  Looking the part, dressing for success, so much of that stuff is high school peer pressure leftovers.  What about the CHARACTER required to stand up to the criminals in the Bush Administration????  Where is it????

Obama's one word sloganeering appeals to...

Thom's quick poll  today proves that SLOGANEERING still works.  It seems Obama's one word slogan -- "change" -- has made it into the hamburger-induced MadCow spongieformed American brains while more than one word from other candidates just made Americans' eyes glass over and trancelike they go eat some more fastfood, including a couple more burgers....

Yikes!

one word sloganeering?

Let me make sure I understand you here, Nora.  Are you saying that it's impossible that anyone who has given the election any thought at all could support Obama?  That it's inconcievable that one might support him based on the issues?  That's kinda harsh, I think.

Frankly , while neither of the remaining Democratic candidates has much in the way of "progressive cred", I think that the Clintons' history shows that Hillary's policies are more likely to diverge from the progressive agenda than Mr. Obama's .

Of course the New Right is wrong ... but that doesn't make WRONG the new RIGHT.

Obama's appeal to the young....mstaggerlee@1:54pm -

Obama's appeal to the young must be analyzed.  Not that my little observation of the One Word Slogan is anything more than an observation.

The problems that have always faced this nation are complex -- and only more so now with the added problems of undoing the criminal damage rendered by the Bush Family Crime Ring.

Of course the Citizenry recognizes that something different needs to be done, however -- to choose a slogan (already at best simplistic if even approaching honesty) that is so shockingly simplistic spooks me.  Change?  Change to what?  Just change to something different whether it's better for people or not?

To give one's trust and the nation to Obama -- the same Obama who campaigned for Lieberman in 2006 -- on the basis of one word and some "inspirational" speeches is not a display of Progressive Ideals and the deeper level of analysis that created our country via our Constitution.  It makes me uneasy to witness emotions aroused and REASON put aside.

Dem debate on healthcare

Did I miss it?  Did either Obama or Hillary mention 'pre-existing conditions'?  Where are they on that?  Because that is a real key to the continued health insurance profiteering!  The corporations backing Clinton and Obama will not want to lose the profits they are getting now from challenging sick people making claims.

I must have missed it.  Did I miss it?  Did they address profit motive in healthcare and "pre-existing conditions"?

What Edwards supporter want

Any candidate looking for support from the Edwards camp will need to do more than talk about economic inequality and ending the war. They will need to COMMIT to holding and punishing the crimes of the current administration..... No moving on like Bill Clinton did with Iran Contra!

We need AL GORE now more than ever.

he sign of a real patriot is to always question authority.

Bush Family Crime Ring Revisionistas are at work again...

More and more in the regular press and on the blog I sense that Americans appear to be thinking that George Bush Senior and George Bush Junior somehow represent two different ways of operating, two different styles of politics, two separate ways of dealing with power.

George Bush Senior really wants to preserve a chance for the other son Jeb Bush and so is trying desperately to produce this perception that there is a difference.

Everything George W. Bush is doing -- dissolving government, obsessive secrecy, free reign to corporate greed and imperialism, cronyism, bigotry against the poor and those of color, fomenting division and encouraging polarization, etcetera -- are all the very tools his father, George H.W. Bush, handed down to him!

The only difference is this: George H.W. Bush's arrogance was the arrogance of white aristocratic privilege while George W. Bush has put his white aristocractic privilege on the steroids of Christianist/Dominionist autonomy.

Bush 41 snuck around and went to great pains to grasp power on his own terms largely under the radar; Bush 43 has been out in the open telling us "Freedom's on the march" -- that is, HIS definition of freedom which is the total expression of the franchise and immunity and white aristocratic Dominionist privilege he has chosen to express; and it's a privilege so vast that he feels no law applies to him, and so now he can destroy all evidence to neutralize our attempts to document his crimes.

(Regarding us getting into this mess so deeep: As a nation of citizens, we have been really bad listeners, as a truly good listener doesn't use his own vocabulary when trying to understand another person, but rather seeks to understand WHERE the other person is coming from! We need to make a glossary of the words Bush Junior uses that have little to do with our usual dictionary definitions!)

The only thing we can impeach George W. Bush on now is DESTRUCTION OF EVIDENCE AND REFUSAL/UNWILLINGNESS TO ALLOW TESTIMONY.
