I appreciate your educated guests!!

I have to call you out.

JFK was elite, but he was not an elitist.

This is a common mistake that the right-wing is using to harm Barack Obama, and I would hope that you could repeatedly point out the difference in the two words.

Elite means extraordinary. Tiger Woods is an elite golfer. Rupert Murdoch is an elite businessman. Paris Hilton is elite (by virtue of her inherited wealth). Stephen Hawking is an elite physicist. The word elite is merely descriptive -- it refers to those in the top edge of any given bell curve. (That's why I chose a few people I admire and others I don't to show that elite is not a value judgment.)

Elitist is a belief that some elite group are superior to everyone else and that implies that members of the elite class deserve more respect, have a right to rule, are immune from laws and rules, etc. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are the most blatant elitists since Leona Helmsley. They feel that by virtue of their elite positions of power, that laws, rules and codes of conduct that apply to everyone else do not apply to them.

Please, Thom, repeat this point ad nauseam because this barb will be hurled constantly at Barack Obama unless the public understands the difference between elite and elitist. The elite speaker in this race is Barack Obama. The elite POW is John McCain. When it comes to giving special favors to the wealthiest and most powerful, clearly it is John McCain who is the elitist in the 2008 campaign.
