Satire vs irony

Hey Thom,

You're right in that the New Yorker cover is not very successful as satire. But wait! Could it be irony? A couple of definitions:
Irony is a literary or rhetorical device, in which there is an incongruity or discordance between what a speaker or a writer says; and what he or she means, or is generally understood.
A statement that, when taken in context, may actually mean the opposite of what is written literally; the use of words expressing something other than their literal intention; The quality or state of an event being both coincidental and contradictory in a humorous or poignant and extremely ...

Definitely that, in my opinion. And, as it was years ago when I was an English teacher, irony is the harder to perceive than satire.

Bloomberg radio just aired Sen. Dodd laying out an UNLIMITED MORTGAGE BANK BAIL OUT plan under the supervision of FRB Bernanke. Why else would everybody be watching the shiny AK-47 slung across BHO's wife's back, irrational off shore drilling leases, black bootstrap single parent welfare queens and Madonna's BASEBALL fetish?

What does Dodd's plan mean? It means that congress oversight authority regarding appropriations of US TREASURY DEBT having been transferred to PRIVATE BANGERS will no longer be an open secret, but legislated into "LAW." Where's SPITZER? Ask him.

We all know that the "PUBLIC" is too stupid to tell the difference between the FULL FRONTAL SATIRE of The New Yorker magazine and a POLITICAL HIT JOB. But, how many of us are conscious of the fact that DODD is proposing a ROBBER BARRON COUP that would make public funds available to PRIVATE MILITARY CONTRACTORS on a scale on par with NATO that neither the US War Powers Act, or Geneva Accords would apply to since MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS have no national accountability.
