Jim Forbes talks with Terri Jentz, who is an author and screenwriter living in Los Angeles, about her new book, STRANGE PIECE OF PARADISE, now out in paperback by Picador books. It’s the true story of a deadly attack she and a college classmate barely survived while camping in the late 1970s; the attack made national news headlines, but the perpetrator was never caught. Jim and Terri will be discussing her process of healing from this traumatic event.

Dear Friends,
The Harry Tompson Center is a day shelter for homeless guests to shower, do laundry, seek medical and legal services, etc. Our friend Don thompson (no relation) has gotten the Tompson Center into the top 10 of a Burger King initiative to raise funds. The HTC on Baronne Street had a 'Special K' incident in August 2005 and a new facility is being built on the property at St. Joseph's Church (you can see it rapidly progressing as you drive the interstate). We originally thought the new facility would be about 250K, and it is turning to more like 950K. Even so we are only 100K short, thanks to grants and the Vincentians, Jesuits, Presentation Sisters, etc. all coming together. By voting for the Harry Tompson Center on the site listed below (and lots of prayers)
you will help us get closer to the goal. The grand opening of the new center is August 26th and we don't want to open in debt! As Don says below, you can vote daily from your computer and I have made a bookmark on my toolbar so I just hit it in the morning when I turn on my
computer...
Thanks for all you do each day!!
Peace, Katy Quigley

(Owensboro, KY) On Thursday, June 28, 2007, farmers and activists made
history by conducting an interracial protest in front of the Federal
Building in downtown Owensboro. Farm supporters and civil rights
activists from as far away as Michigan drove over a thousand miles to
join an African-American farmer, Harry Young, as he continues his
protest of what he says is an illegal foreclosure and sale of his
land.
Young was the last black farmer in three western Kentucky counties.
His land contains as much as $750,000,000 in coal reserves and it was
sold in a disputed sale 2 years ago. The Farm Services Administration
claimed he hadn't paid on his loan in 25 years, a claim which Young
disputes. He also says he has signed receipts from the agency showing
payment.
Young says the media is ignoring his situation. The historic alliance
between black and white farmers was totally ignored by the majority
media, including the newspaper that had reporters on site to cover
another injustice to Kentucky minorities and farmers--the confiscation
of thousands of Kentucky farmland for a military base during World War
Two, and the ongoing class action lawsuit which it spawned. The
newspaper has reportedly refused to publish additional letters to the
editor from Young about the injustices which he faces.
Thousands of press releases were sent to media world wide, including
several that were sent to local media. The only known broadcast media
coverage of the event was provided by the lone black owned radio
station in the market. The situation is a prime example of why
minority owned media, ethinic and minority reporters and ethnic
publications, books and literature provided a priceless contribution to
American democracy.
The plight of family farmers, particularly black farmers and the
terrible history of lynching for land and land loss is examined by a
distant cousin of Mr. Young's in a new book, Land, Legacy and Lynching:
Building the Future in Black America, available from Lulu Press.

In Augusta, Georgia the Columbia County School System (Predominately
Caucasian) made a African American Male Kindergartner clean the filthy
bathroom toilets with his bare hands. As the mother complained to the
Superintendent in writing her letter was then given to the local Radio
Station WGAC a Beasley Broadcasting Station. The radio host, Austin
Rhodes, known for making negative statements about African Americans in
the Augusta community then called the 5 year old child “Pee Pee
Boy
and “Wee Wee Boy countless times on his show. He then called the
boys’ mom Mrs. Vann a "“Media Whore" over the airwaves where
thousands in her community heard it.
This community knows and supports her and there were many local
protest. After 14 years of Austin Rhodes' abuse and African American
degradation now he is attacking women and children by name. The first
goal is to get this shock jock off the air.The Vanns' have helped many
families and has donated money to many nonprofit organizations. They
also have a nonprofit organization called Community Action
Coalition(CAC). The Coalition is constantly behind the scenes in the
community. Ms.Vann has 2 degrees and served her country in the US
Army. She has been married to the SAME man over 15 years and is also a
nurse. She is a veteran, a wife, a mother, a daughter and a sister.
They (her and her husband) are assets to our community.
This same talk show host Austin Rhodes who is now called the Imus of
Augusta made the same comment that Imus made Live on Rejoice 94.7 a
couple of weeks ago. Oh yes he did! He actually called the station
(94.7 Christian African American Audience) and made the same comment as
IMUS made. The difference is he never apologized ,he repeated the
comments on black radio and he is stilled employeed attacking the black
community. Austin Rhodes said "she is a “Nappy Head Ho" and said
"“I will say it again."
While Beasley continues to support Austin Rhodes, the community
continues to denounce WGAC, Beasley Broadcasting Group, Inc. The
Augusta Chronical newspaper will not give any attention to this
dreadful and demeaning situation. There was even a protest and press
conference where the NAACP, SCLC, New Black Panther Party, and many
others were in attendance. The family address was also given out over
the air by Austin Rhodes. He told his listeners to “go "visit the pee
pee boy" and consequently they have had their home broken into,
victims of racial slurs, driven off the road and continuously harassed
by their community.
Their children are unsure why they have no friends and are called names
daily. The type of supporters Austin Rhodes has ride by the protest
calling us “Niggers and saying “Get a Job. They really think
because we are sacrificing to boycott and protest we don'’t work.
Austin Rhodes is worse than Imus! Rhodes also has a TV talk show and
receives support from Comcast. We have also started a campaign to
boycott Comcast and Kroger. Kroger, Ryan’s Restaurant and Taylor
Toyota have since stopped advertising with Beasley Broadcasting
Group,Inc.The black community is now taking a stand. Fourteen years of
abuse will no longer be tolerated. Now he attacks us by name and
violates our personal rights.
The Vanns'’ have sent many students to college and made an
immeasurably positive impact on our society. We need your support
anyway you can. Send letters to Comcast and especially Beasley
Broadcasting Group, Inc that state “Austin Rhodes has to GO!
The Community Action Coalition is taking up donations for a “legal
defense fund for these victims and other victims whose rights have
been violated and lives been terrorized. To donate to their legal
defense fund send all emails and correspondences directly The Community
Action Coalition. Their mailing address is P.O. Box 31304 Augusta , GA
30901. To schedule them for media interviews use the contact
information listed above.
