This week Jim Forbes talks with Dr. Helen Caldicott,about her new book, Nuclear Power is Not the Answer.

For more than 30 years, Caldicott has been educating the public about the medical hazards of our nuclear age and has received many prizes and awards for her work, including 19 honorary doctoral degrees, a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, and the Smithsonian Institute named her one of the most influential women of the 20th Century.

Jim Forbes talks with Terri Jentz, who is an author and screenwriter living in Los Angeles, about her new book, STRANGE PIECE OF PARADISE, now out in paperback by Picador books. It’s the true story of a deadly attack she and a college classmate barely survived while camping in the late 1970s; the attack made national news headlines, but the perpetrator was never caught. Jim and Terri will be discussing her process of healing from this traumatic event.

Jim sits down with Paul Waldman, from Media Matters about its report out last week on media bias in the news. Waldman has authored and co-authored a number of books on media and politics, worked in electoral campaigns and political consulting, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Senior Fellow at Media Matters for America and his latest book is Being Right Is Not Enough: What Progressives Must Learn From Conservative Success. And Jim talks with his friend and colleague, Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches, who will soon be making a move to lead Common Cause. They also will be discussing media bias in the news and what can be done about it.

This week on The Time is Now: How does it work? How does the public get sold war? Jim will be talking about the media's role with his old friend, veteran journalist Bill Moyers, who has a new PBS special premiering this week on the role of the press in the run-up to the Iraq war.

And he’ll be talking about the role intelligence agencies play with Newsweek magazine contributor, Carlo Bonini, who is also the co-author of an important new book called COLLUSION (Melville House books) about how intelligence is fabricated and sold. Bonini and his colleague, Giuseppe D’Avanzo are the reporters who broke the Niger forgery story (the story of Niger's yellowcake uranium being sold to Iraq). Jim Forbes sits down with author and journalist, William Langewiesche, talking about Brazil’s extreme prison situation, in a story called, “How a prison gang took over a city of 20 million” (Vanity Fair magazine’s April issue).

Langewiesche is an American author and journalist who was a professional airplane pilot for many years and made his name as a national correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly magazine. He has written articles covering events such as the World Trade Center cleanup, a three-part series which was published as the book American Ground. His recent books include: The Atomic Bazaar: The Rise of the Nuclear Poor (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, May 15, 2007) and The Outlaw Sea: A World of Freedom, Chaos, and Crime (North Point Press, 2004).

This Saturday on The Time is Now, Jim Forbes is tackling the persistent and dangerous idea that prison rape is a joke. Well it’s not a joke. He’ll be talking about it with Criminal Justice expert Manning Marable of Columbia University.

Dr. Marable is Professor of Public Affairs, Political Science, and History at Columbia and has written and/or edited 21 books and scholarly anthologies. His current books-in-progress include: Racism, Criminal Justice and the Law (forthcoming).

Also, this Sunday Dr. Marable will be speaking at The Riverside Church to help celebrate the anniversary of the Martin Luther King’s 1967 Beyond Vietnam speech, given at Riverside, and Marable will reflect on that conflict’s parallels with Iraq. (Nave at The Riverside Church, April 1, 7 pm).

Saturday, Jim Forbes talks with Julio Medina, Founder of Exodus Transitional Community, Inc., a program which helps ex- cons return into society and find work. Medina was himself a violent gang leader who served twelve years at Sing Sing for drugs. When he got out, he decided to become a different kind of leader and dedicate his life to helping former prisoners stay out of jail. This weekend, at the South by Southwest Film and Music festival, in Austin Texas, Medina’s story and those of the men and women of the Exodus program are the subject of a new film, HARD ROAD HOME (Greenhouse Pictures), which will be in theatres later this year. Jim Forbes will be talking with Medina about what caused his transformation and about what Macky Alston, the film’s director calls, “The larger goal of the film is to initiate a campaign (within the faith community) to achieve the scriptural mandate to care for prisoners.” read more

Pastor Wright has been serving the Chicago congregation of Trinity United Church of Christ since 1972, whose membership has grown from 87 adults to more than 8,000 today.

Today’s topic: the Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor conference this past week in New Orleans.
