Literacy

Hi Mista Chuck,

My name is Harold Jay and I'm a 38 year old male born and raised in Newark, N.J.

I was educated in the Newark public school systems up until grade 10 were I dropped out of high school. I had to leave school in order to work to help my stereotypical single parent household make ends meet. Growing up education came second to finding a way to earning a living. In 2001 I received a chance to work for Verizon in Newark N.J. as an associate and did so happily. As an associate clerk I saw many opportunities for advancement in the company. Unfortunately for me the only way to advance in the company was to have a proper education. Overcoming my educational defaults was the biggest issue for me. I began helping myself by reading more and eventually wanted to become an author and publisher as I also began studying the Book Industry itself. Using the information I obtained I was blessed to create a web site called EmbraceLiteracy.com. The reason for the web site is to help writers display their unpublished original works, show other that there are many literacy programs available and to make it cool to Embrace Literacy. The two question America is posed to answer are why are the literacy number so low and what can be done about it? As an adult from the inner city I can say that most of the youth have no faith in a formal education with the belief that they will have no chance for advancement. They believe they will not advance in corporate America because of where they are from and or race. Inner city youth also have the mindset that being book smart is not being cool. Most inner city youth are picked on and laughed at if they hold any intelligence for any other social or political arena other than the streets. In my studies I have found that this lack of trust in education transcends social and geographical lines. So how do we fix the problem? I believe that linking literacy with the trendy pop culture of today will be the answer. Literacy and pop culture actually are intrinsically linked and by showing children today the importance of education via pop cultuer we can change the crisis that is plaguing America inner cities.

Thank You

Harold Jay
