How to Whack a Liberal

Jonathan Weisman of the Washington Post screws over Obama in today's column on the issue of abortion rights.

How it reads:

On paper, this campaign looks fairly standard. Obama, an Illinois Democrat, is staunchly in favor of abortion rights, while McCain, an Arizona Republican, has compiled a solid record over four Senate terms of opposing abortion.

How it should read:

On paper, this campaign looks fairly standard. Obama, an Illinois Democrat, is staunchly in favor of abortion rights, while McCain, an Arizona Republican, has compiled a solid record over four Senate terms of opposing abortion rights.

It's a subtle difference that makes all the difference in the world. It would be more obvious if it said:

Obama, an Illinois Democrat, is staunchly in favor of abortion.

That would be a profoundly inaccurate and unfair way of characterizing Obama's position. The decision to exise the word 'rights' from what McCain has opposed over four terms in the Senate is equally inaccurate and distorting.

Rights and informed consent

I'm not in favor of abortion. Abortion is a sad, last resort. But the right to an abortion should not be taken away from women in the first trimester. I think women have had plenty of time in the first trimester to decide whether or not to keep a pregnancy.

After that, it really should be a decision based purely on medical grounds. If a woman's mental balance is in jeopardy, it should be more than just stress. Pregnancy is stressful. Suddenly being faced with having to support a baby is stressful. Women are emotional during pregnancy. Those things in and of themselves should not be enough to allow a second or third trimester abortion. Mental health should be objectively evaluated by a competent mental health professional.

That said, I believe a good many women who have abortions after the first trimester would not if they were given education in fetal development and what abortion a second and third trimester abortion does. There is no informed consent without accurate information. Hiding the information in the belief that women might feel guilty infantilizes women. They would feel a lot worse if they were to uncover the information later.
