Today on Doing Time - Wednesday July 23rd, 2008

By Alex G.

Barack Obama is still overseas playing the role of visiting President and, so far, has successfully thread the needle of pleasing Arabs and Israelis (sort of) at the same time without changing his positions. Kuby will explain how he did it, and why so few other candidates, or even Presidents, have been able to do the same thing. Also, Obama has had such success with this Mid East junket in part because he just looks like a dashing President, exuding leadership charm and the such, as he meets with smiling dignitaries who are used to dealing with Bush.

While we’re imagining Obama as President, CNN raises a provocative question on the topic. Is it possible that an Obama Presidency could actually make race relations in the USA worse? Might white Americans become more reluctant to acknowledge entrenched racism once a black man has made the supreme achievement?

We’ll check in with Lawrence Mishel to clear up a few economic questions. For one, how can Congress pass a housing bailout bill for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac if they say the cost will be somewhere between zero dollars and $100 Billion. Who makes up these estimates? Another sign of the dreary times: the rising prices of raw materials, even as scrap has led to a rash of manhole cover thefts.

Plus, McCain’s latest fit and flubs, Planned Parenthood hits him on contraception votes, and Christian Bale’s dilemma: mom or wife? And so much more …

Good show Ron

Did you get to see the CNN/Essence shows on Black America?

I thought that Soledad Obrien did an excellent job of moderating. It would be healthy I think if America elected Obama, and if some whites feel that it takes the racism question off the table than thats a plus too. Maybe its time for people to put away excuses and start being accountable? Black Men need to be fathers,Girls need to be less promiscous, doing well in school does not make you a TOM. Obama, and his wife are proof that hard work pays off. It is not white racism that has so many young black men failing out of public schools.

Asian immigrants including boat people from the 70's are proof that education and the family unit pays off. Jews are proof that education, the family unit and support from within the community pays off. Italians and Germans learned that. Latinos are starting to get it now too.

To answer someone elses question above: Jesse Jackson and Ralph Nader are both ego manics. Any social benefit they may have provided in the 60's is being canceled out by the pain they have inflicted on society in the 90's and two thousands. Jesse has become a corporate shakedown machine more than an activist and his illegitimate child with a PUSH subordinate is not something a REV. should be doing. Ralph needs to own up to the fact that there was a big difference between DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS.
