I want to thank all of you who took the time to contact us at Air America about the Sam Seder Show. It shows you care and are part of our extended Air America family, even if we can't agree on every lineup judgment.
I, too, think Sam is terrific and was eager to keep him on air. After we discussed various possibilities, I'm very happy that we agreed on a new show that's really unlike anything else on radio (or television). The three hour program, as I wrote in my posted "Message" earlier week, will focus on "networks and netroots" -- that is, a review of the Sunday political talkfests with mostly bloggers as commentators.
Please know that, consistent with my 35 year history as a dedicated progressive advocate and author, I'm devoted to keeping Air America as the leader in progressive talk and to taking it from the red to the black. Both.
I believe when we're done with all our plans for the new Air America 2.0 -- in terms on overall lineup, new platforms, better marketing, important collaborations (like our partnership with MoveOn this week broadcasting the "Virtual Town Hall on Iraq") -- you'll be as optimistic as I am that Air America will both survive and thrive after a roller coaster past year.

Sam Seder show
I am sick at heart after listening to the last M-F Sam Seder show. I subscribed to AAR Premium just to get Sam after a KQKE in S.F. fall program change. I and others begged KQKE to carry his a.m. show. I don't listen to KQKE anymore except for a few minutes of Rachel each week. I got AAR Premium on 9/18/06. On 9/22/06 my dog died. Downloading and listening to Sam these last 7 months has gotten me through the saddest winter of my life. Not only did I find ways to get involved in the 11/06 election, but I always laughed through my tears at Sam and his guests. I am writing this through tears. I hope you heard his last show. I hope that he finds a venue for every day that he wants one. I believe that he has such decency and talent that he will soar.
I have heard some of Lionel in early a.m. here. I won't seek him out. I wish you and AAR well but I think ending Sam's show is a huge mistake.
Until today I thought it might be a joke since he was magnanimous all week.
The airways and Sam's audience took another hit today. I will cancel my AAR Premium and only renew it if that is the only way I can hear Sam again on your station.

Mr. Green, Bullshit. You fire the best progressive host on the only progressive radio network in the country and its good for progressives because you wrote a lefty book and bought the only progressive radio network in the country and fired the best progressive host? In the immortal words of Robert Kennedy earlier today toward the close of the showw "What the hell is wrong with you?" Save the bullshit. Good luck.

By johnpkirkApril 13, 2007 - 5:43pmYou are incorrect Sir!
Who in your network is going to do the interviews that Sam did? Senator Russ Feingold, Chairman of the Government Reform Committee Representative Henry Waxman? Most influential individuals in the progressive world, Kos, Atrois, Eric Alterman etc. Will that be Lionel? I do not think so.
Look at the line up that phoned into Sam's show today. Look at the outreach and the reaction that you received over this decision. You are incorrect in thinking that this change will keep your core listeners and followers.
This change was the last of many that is not acceptable to the listeners (albeit not all are of your doing), however, this was the one that hurt the most. That is because Sam was not a Lionel - he was one of us that was smart, engaged, accessable and more important a leader (although very humble) look what great grace he composed himself over the last week since the announcement.
That is the problem - you do not get the listeners. You hosted a few shows and thought I can run this radio. Sam has appeared on National media shows and represented your network AIR AMERICA RADIO's behalf and promoted the professional and smart ideas of liberals and progressives while all along being label by a good majority of the media as "those looney lefties".
He was the face that made the change happen this fall, He and Rachael showed that we are a strong force and Great Americans.
So to sum it up - You Sir are incorrect. This is a bad thing and your statements will not correct the damage that has been done.

Sam *is* Air America to those of us who have been listening since 2004. You say that we are "part of our extended Air America family." Really? What part of that family are the original AAR listeners, Mr. Green? The ugly stepchildren???
I simply can't believe that you don't have a way to keep Sam on the air 5 days a week. For those of us who have listened to Air America since its debut, this is a huge slap in the face.
I know I should be polite and thank you for your statement acknowledging our outrage, but quite frankly it seems like so many empty words.

Mr. Green, all you did in this comment about Sam Seder was rephrase what you said earlier this week: That he is going to be demoted to one show per week, and replaced by a fluff jock. This is your attempt to appease the AAR faithful?
You have several choices...Keep talented, knowledgeable hosts like Sam and Rachel in the lineup....or continue down the path of unlistenable fluff. If you choose the latter, we aren't coming with you.

I do't believe you get it. Maybe you've made this bad decision and feel you have to stick with it and tell yourself you're doing the right thing. I hope you're right -- that AAR is going to be a successful progressive radio station, but I doubt it very much. I've been a premium member for 2 years 37 weeks, and I am certain you've begun your lineup change with the single worst move you could have made. It is so very very disturbing that Sam Seder is gone, and I don't think you understand just how much you have disillusioned your listeners.

By Linda RandolphApril 13, 2007 - 6:33pmDear Mark Green, I have
Dear Mark Green,
I have been listening to Air America from the first moment Al Franken went on the air. I had spent years yearning for something like Air America, dissatisfied with NPR and most talk radio. So, I have listened to Al Franken, Randi Rhodes, The Majority Report and then The Sam Seder Show pretty much everyday (mostly at work) since the network went on air. The ONLY reason I subscribed to Air America was so that I could listen to Sam's new show after the Majority Report ended.
It's been brutal to watch a company that I want so much to succeed to be plagued by one horrendous management catastrophe after another. I think it is so important for our country that Air America thrive with the amount of disinformation that is coming from the mainstream media. So, the network's success is not just important to me personally but to the country, I feel. And Air America is doing that, it's shown that progressive talk radio CAN work in the marketplace. But that can only happen if the management aren't as relentlessly incompetent as George W. Bush.
To say that Sam Seder's new show is supposed to be focusing on the Netroots and their impact on journalism and our country is, pardon the french, fucking ridiculous. Sam Seder IS a part of the Netroots. Wasn't it Sam Seder who helped bring video broadcasts to the incredibly influential YearlyKos conference? Wasn't he helping Iraq War Veterans get elected to Congress with the Majority Report's 'Fighting Democrats' series, week-in/week-out, for two years? Wasn't he interviewing Jim Webb, Jon Tester and Admiral Sestak long before they were on the MSM's radar? Wasn't it Sam Seder who has been interviewing bloggers, who are becoming the new class in political pundit, a minimum of three times a week, every week for the past 3 years and not just recently (like most in the rest of the media)? Is there another talk show in the country that could lay claim to having weekly guest spots with the largest political minds on the internet in the country - the ones with the largest influence and readership (larger than most US newspapers) like Atrios and Markos Moulitsas? Hasn't Sam Seder been interviewing and highlighting the writing, for years, of people like Glenn Greenwald and Joe Conason, people who have really helped to shift the dialogue amongst journalists in the media?
frankly, it's insulting to the audience of the Majority Report and The Sam Seder Show to hear he's being demoted to a Sunday show in order to focus on a topic he's been trailblazing for three years. He has been part of the Netroots movement from the beginning by having people like Markos and Matt Stoller and other citizen political gurus regularly on when there is no where else that was happening in the media. What you have done by demoting Sam, is spit in the face of some of your most loyal and paying customers because what this says, is that you aren't loyal to your own employees, nor your audience. Because you can't hide behind the excuse that his numbers weren't good enough and it was a business decision, since they haven't even been released yet. the guy who had worked his way up in the company when starting low on the totem pole with no radio experience, stuck through the constant parade of management blunders, who very quickly became one hell of a great broadcaster and you didn't even have the decency to give him an honest chance. that's what really angers me the most, is that it really didn't matter what he achieved or what his numbers actually were. it makes me want to demand my money back.
But I won't. But I highly doubt I will subscribe again.
And finally, Lionel. When I heard about this last week, I was upset but reserved judgement until I heard who the replacement was. So, you replace someone who helped to get Democratic Iraq War Veterans elected to Congress with someone who who links to 9-11 conspiracies? You have got to be kidding. If you are looking for a wacky morning guy, I guess you found him. I listen to Air America because I like to laugh but more importantly because I'm serous about politics and what is going on in the world. I will gladly pay to listen to someone with credibility who can affect change in our country but not someone who is a conspiracy theorist.
It just makes me sad. I say that because that's what its like watching such immense talent go to waste.

You are one stubborn person to think that ignoring the fact that Sam, more so than most of the hosts on the network, connects the listener to the issues. He does it with efficiency and humor. Progressive talk needs to be as "IN YOUR FACE" as the NeoCon talking heads, but in such a way as the generate the "AAhh" in us and not the lunacy exhibited by those Neo idiots. Sam does this perfectly. It seems that you have given up on the notion that one can make a profit without succumb ing to the greatest common denominator: the middle of the road listener. why must you grab some "fluff" to quote another posted comment. why can't you invest in what is RIGHT, oops, I mean Left? Because you are just a part of the corporate structure, ruled by the almighty dollar. CBS gave M.A.S.H. 3 years to catch on and it steadily built a following. I never heard of this Ludacrist? guy before and I feel betrayed by you. Just another scam artist. well you certainly painted a bleak, dull picture here!

By whethermanmApril 14, 2007 - 10:20amOH I JUST LUV LIONEL WHAT A GREAT DECISION!!
Now that I have Mr. Green's attention I'll say how AWFUL LIONEL is and what a horrible decision you made demoting Sam to Sunday afternoons.
Maybe if you actually MARKETED Sam's show and did some promotion Sam's show might reach the audience he deserves. I know dollars are scared at AAR but a highschool garage band does better netroots promotion of their product then what I've seen come out of AAR 2.0.
Lionel was on my AAR station, KTLK in Los Angeles, for six months and the show was appalling. Lionel may pull in big numbers on the East Coast at some middle of the road AM, but he has zero appeal on the West Coast. He is horrible on the issues, seems terribly ill-prepared and seems to appeal to little old ladies on Long Island. The antithesis of hip. The good news on the West Coast is that Stephanie Miller (who isn't on AAR) will be on in place of Lionel. And Stephanie Miller seems like Amy Goodman compared to Lionel and that is saying a lot.
To replace the humanity, intellect and wit of Sam Seder with Lionel shows that you Mr. Green don't understand what passes for hip, cutting edge radio. I'm personally angry as someone who has paid their premium dues for the last two years. You obviously DON'T heed your audience. What a load of crap. Instead of being loyal to your talent you are taking the easy way out. Don't do any marketing or promotion. Don't take any risks.

Let's be honest, this is all about money. Pandering to the mainstream is much more profitable than playing to the core audience. We can complain, whine and threaten Air America via email or phone and it doesn't make a bit of difference. But if you go after the money, they'll start listening. So if you've enjoyed the Sam Seder Show, contact your local affiliate and let them know that you won't be listening to Lionel. Contact the sponsors of Lionel's show and let them know that Lionel is not welcome on Air America and that you won't be using their products/services while he is on Air America, and contact Lionel's show directly and let them know you won't be listening

By flatbrokeApril 13, 2007 - 7:06pmSo sorry that you treated Sam Seder like this
If you agree that he is fantastic then why would you demote him to 3 hours a week from 15? You are not a liberal but you may well be a Democrat in the worst sense of the word - always scared to stand up for what you really believe in. Always scared to do the right thing. Always compromising with the enemy because you think they might not kick your ass if you are nice to them. If you and the Democrats for once just stood up for what you really believed in and promoted your beliefs and led from the front you would find much to your suprise that most Americans and human beings in general are really liberals! If you would just let the truth be told. Instead you are going to take some mealy mouthed inoffensive little ass kissing marketing move to reduce controversy and appear more "friendly" and to fit in with the current false conservative ethos rather than ripping it apart to show the liberal truth underneath it. If ever there was a time more ripe for a liberal revolution this is it. And you are just going to walk away because you don't want to upset anyone. With friends like you, who needs enemies?

We won't have to convince people to boycott Lionel's show.. they just won't be able to listen longer than 5 minutes, without switching to Stephanie Miller on NovaM. You are wrong, Mr. Green, and while this move to Lionel (oh my God, I still don't believe it) may just be more profitable to you in the long run, you've basically just run-off your listeners. In my case? for the last time.
If you were any smarter than Air America's last batch of suits, you'd LISTEN to your LISTENERS, perhaps you'd get the message. Did the fact that after firing Maron -- TWICE -- he was asked to host another morning show tell you anything?? Once again, Air America totally disregards its audience. And my goodness... LIONEL?? I stopped listening to him YEARS AGO. He's not a progressive, but a self-proclaimed libertarian! (i.e., republican who wants to keep his guns and get laid, as Thom Hartman says) Give me a break. I cancelled my premium subscription when AAR took Maron off for the second time, had my decision to do so reinforced when AAR fired Malloy ... and now I'll probably be cancelling my XM subscription, since I don't think the fee is worth only listening from 3-8. Lionel followed by Ed Schultz makes my stomach and head hurt, just to think about it.
It was fun while it lasted. Thanks for NOTHING.

It's important to note that Miller is still syndicated by Jones. When you get the Nova M. stream there is no one in the 9-12 slot so you get shunted over to the Phoenix station 1480? broadcast which hosts Miller.
It may be possible to ask the Drobnys if they would consider putting sam in her slot instead.
Although I don't personally like Miller's radio show, she does have a HUGE following which no doubt contributed to Mr. Green's decision to replace Sam with Lionell who comes with a built-in audience (or he thinks... but they thought that about Springer too, and that didn't work out that way.) So I wouldn't expect Nova M to JUMP at the chance to get Seder. But they might consider it. maybe.

I think AAR is giving up on an important segment of the audience that Mr. Seder represents. I read Lionel's website and found it uninteresting. I cannot fathom what caused this very poor programing change but good luck with it. I will certaintly seek other sources of information elswhere. What the hell were you thinking, sir? You shitcan him before the first book is even out! Good God what a foolish and shortsighted decision, Mr Green!
I have been on the AAR bandwagon from day one, and have stayed on board through one disastrous programming move after another (the cancellation of one of the best radio programs I have ever heard, Morning Sedition, the replacement of the hip, funny and informative Unfiltered with the Jerry Springer show for pity's sake, as well as the unceremonious and ridiculously unfair firing of Mike Malloy) and I had so much hope after you and your brother bought the network. I couldn't say what others have said any better. I'm wondering what others are wondering .... where are we going to hear those experts, that were initiated by Al Franken and carried forward by Sam? As Al said, Sam is Air America Radio. Al needs to visit with Green. :) :) Unless Lionel is going to change his format, he doesn't seem to fit with the caliber/style that has set AAR apart from all other radio stations. Oh, well .... like Mallory has said many times, radio is a mean/dirty/nasty business (althou, he did exclude the Drobny's/NovaMRadio). Maybe we should be glad Sam wanted to stay in such a business. I know I left the business world with it's competitive ugliness for the world of children (public education). I want Sam to be wherever he feels honoured and respected (i.e. NovaMRadio)and if he thinks he's being honoured and respected at AAR by having a show on Sundays (which may work out as the coolest adventure he and us have ever been on), so be it and "so it goes." By renorayApril 13, 2007 - 9:15pmAir America is self destructing
Your decision to demote Sam Seder is only the latest in a long line of mistakes that you have been making.
Your first major mistake was firing Mark Maron. His show was, by far, the best in the morning drive time slot (6 - 9 am). It was unique, entertaining, intelligent, and full of heart. There was nothing else on radio, then or now, to compare with it. It was quality programming all the way through. I remember Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins coming on his show in the final days and basically begging Air America management to reconsider their decision. I remember his live broadcasts from local bookstores and restaurants, which featured live music and comedians. It was awesome, and he still managed to make his political points along the way. I used to look forward to listening to his show every morning. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the Young Turks who replaced him. They are good, but he was GREAT !!! They can't fill his shoes, but it's not their fault.
I always enjoyed Sam Seder for his humor and his analysis. I would look forward to listening to him every day on my morning break at work.
One by one, you have been taking away all of the people I enjoy listening to. This is not the way to build an audience. We are the loyal listeners who have been with this station from the beginning, since 04/2004. If you alienate us, who will be left to listen to Air America ? Who are you going to appeal to ? Who will be your audience ? Do you want to turn Air America into another bland, superficial radio station, with mass appeal but no soul ? That appears to be where you are headed, in the neverending search for greenbacks and the "bottom line".
I really don't understand how you, the management, have been arriving at your decisions. Air america had great talent from Day One. The problem has never been the talk show hosts. The problem has always been the people whose job it was to market the radio station. That is the one area where Air America is really lacking and has shown very little creativity.
Air America has always had a great product. It's just that the so-called experts running the company have absolutely no idea what to do with it, and are blaming the product itself. They think if they just change the product (ie. talk show hosts), then everything else will fall into place.
It's time for the senior executives at Air America to take a good, long, look in the mirror, to see where the real problem lies.

Think back to the original AAR lineup--Morning Sedition, Unfiltered, Franken, Randi Rhodes, The Majority Report and Mike Malloy, with Ring of Fire, Laura Flanders, So What Else Is News and Kyle Jason on weekends--god it makes me sick with nostalgia to remember those days! With a little promotion and some semblance of management skill, that crew would have taken liberal radio to unseen heights. But as we all know, constant money problems and considerable lack of said management prowess (to say to least!) has left AAR as a shell of its former self. Now with Sam getting the ignominious ax and Lionel (good freakin' gawd LIONEL!!!) replacing him, it looks as if the future ain't gonna be so bright either. . .

Shame on you for crapping all over his loyal listeners as well as the fantastic bloggers, reporters, politicians, etc, that regularly participated on his show! Why should we be loyal to you if you let our best people go? We won't be, that's what! This is so heartbreaking! It's obscene and shameful. You come off like a stupid jerk. How embarrassing for you. Let me put it in a way that any business person should understand: Lionel is like New Coke or the Edsel.
You blew it Mr. Green. You don't know your target audience. You didn’t do any market research. You don't understand us; you don't know what we want or what we need. You don't get what we've all been through with all the past mistakes prior management has made over the last 3 years. You only weakly address your first blunder – relegating Sam to a weekend slot -- yet you don’t even give us any rational or logical explanation for this seemingly idiotic move. But you aren’t even acknowledging your other major mistake. No one wants Lionel! He’s not one of us. Sam is. Hey, Rush Limbaugh gets good ratings too – why don’t you hire him to replace Randi?
Lionel is not a good fit with the rest of the lineup. He is not progressive. He does not belong on a network known for “Progressive Talk Radio.

If you were really devoted to "keeping Air America as the leader in progressive talk", then you would not have taken the most talented, intelligent and passionate progressive voice of progressive talk, Sam Seder, and demoted his immense talent to 3 hours a week.
And about "taking it from the red to the black.", I think you will quickly learn that replacing the best in progressive talk radio with a sexist, homophobic hack like Lionel is not the way to accomplish that aim.
Listen to the Air America fans, Mr. Green. Listen to your customers. Admit your mistake and get Sam back on the air 5 days a week. And PROMOTE HIS SHOW! With that small move you will have taken a large leap to accomplishing your stated aims.

By DonnageddonApril 13, 2007 - 9:51pmStephanie Miller here I come
From 9AM-noon ET, I used to switch back and forth from Stephanie Miller to Sam Seder. I love both programs but I found myself tiring of the sophmoric humor and really appreciated Sam's combination of wit and wisdom. Lionel? I agree with a lot of his views but we don't need a whiny crank to just reinforce our own thoughts. Sam motivated us to do something instead of just listen and nod our heads. I don't believe the decision was made with good programming in mind--it's a play to lowest common denominator. I hate to inform you but O'reilly and Limbaugh listeners will NEVER tune in no matter who hosts the show. I hope Lionel brings in the cash so someday soon I can pick up AAR from New Haven to Buffalo. That will be the only worthwhile outcome from this marketing gambit.

By frisbeedadApril 13, 2007 - 9:56pmSam Seder- What a loss
Mr. Green,
I cannot tell you how pissed off I am at you for doing this to Sam! Like others have said, you sold out, you didn't listen to the true AAR listeners that have been here from day one. Management, not the talent has been the problem here. Liberal radio? Next you will tell us that oh, yea, ur signing on Rush or O'Rieley! U'd do better with Stephen Colbert, but I think he has too much class to deal with the likes of YOU! Sam has been a loyal employee and you just fucked him over. Well, Mr. Green, payback is a bitch and I hope the bad karma you have initiated comes back three-four-five fold. Lionel will fall on his sad ass! Nobody that loved Sam will listen. You fucked up and I hope you lose money on this jerk and beg, beg, beg Sam to come back, and he says fuck you i'm going to NovaM. U ar an Ass wipe. I can't think of any worse things to say...just use your imagination!

By wickedthemusApril 13, 2007 - 9:57pmSam & AAR
Sorry, Mr. Green but you just fired the hardest working and smartest person on radio or television. Every day I waited for Sam to give me hope, to let me know that I was not alone with my horror of what is happening to our country. Sam not only gave me hope he gave me understanding and analysis the no other news person could. He is so smart, has and incredible memory for events and no one can take on the right wing callers as he does. And he is funny without degrading anyone. My heart is still aching. I guess I will be listening to a lot more music as I work on my computer and drive in my car...Janet

For every customer that takes the time to complain, there are a thousand who just silently quit using your product.
You have pissed off more of the AAR listening audience than you know.
And Lionel is not going to bring in the "new" fans that are neede4d to rebuild the audience.
Swallow your pride and do the right thing. You have made a big mistake that needs to be remedied immediately.

By DonnageddonApril 13, 2007 - 9:59pmNot the way to make a profit
Mr. Green: I like everyone else here do appreciate that you saved AAR. I know you believe in progressive politics. I get that this is a business and needs to make money and I also get that this Lionel has a large proven following. I get that you want a big name that isn't totally identified with dirty hippie progressives that can bring people in and enlarge the listenership for all the other AAR shows.
But you really picked the wrong show to boot. As numerous people have said, Sam was the heart and soul of AAR. You have risked alienating your proven base in hopes snaring new listeners. I can't say I'd be happy to see any of the AAR people replaced, but Sam was the last I would want to see go.
Unlike many of the other very good and intelligent hosts on AAR, Sam made listening totally fun. His humor and wit was matched by his intelligence and true belief in progressive causes.
He was here from the get-go. He helped build this station. I can't believe you could think we'd all just get over seeing him leave.
I honestly don't think I'll be listening to AAR as much.

By julia waller-elingApril 13, 2007 - 10:09pmWow...You Lose
Mr. Green,
There was time a couple years ago when I was awestruck by the talent appearing on Air America. The thing that these pretentious empty suits at the top never seemed to realize was that talent was never the problem. You had Morning Sedition which was great. Rachel Maddow developed into a great asset (I wouldn't be surprised if she moves on to something better.) Al Franken was the best. Randi is a powerhouse. Majority report was hilarious! There will never be another Mike Malloy. Ring of Fire and Laura Flanders on the weekend.
The business structure, growth strategy and management were completely bungled from the top.
Al Franken said to Sam Seder, "You are the Future." Well now this future will not come to pass. SAM!! GET OUT AS SOON AS YOU CAN!! THIS SHIP IS GOING DOWN FASTER THAN PARIS HILTON!
Even though this Lionel clown might have some business connections to other syndicates, he is just another sellout lemming like Jerry Springer was.
You really want to know why Air America Sucks. I'll tell you. I live 12 miles south of Washington D.C. and the puny A.M. station that you guys share with the likes of Ed Shultz isn't even powerful enough to reach my radio!! Pathetic...
You didn't even hardly advertise in any way for the Move ON Virtual town hall meeting until your stupid letter yesterday.
Sam Seder is SO good at this. With Franken gone, he's was the best you guys had. What is wrong with you people? It's all over. Who ever else might be left will scamper away as quickly as possible. You watch.

By RodesApril 13, 2007 - 10:10pmMe Too!
At first I would piss my kids off because living in Mt. Vernon I could not get a "clear signal" on the DC channel AM 1260. But I kept it on with the static and the "wo wo" noise in hopes that one bit of talk would come through. IN the hopes that my children would listen and understand the crap that is going on in America. Again, this is Mt. Vernon - George Washington's home - 10 miles from the heart of "DC" and I could not get the station. Then they started replacing most of AAR program (because AAR switched to Jerry Springer) with Jones Network. And I, like so many people, can take small doses of Stephanie MIller and Ed Schultz, but I will not go out of my way to listen.
So I went with the delayed listening through premium and podcast (and paid for it) and would not leave my computer from 9 - 12 am for the Sam Seder stream. I purchased Oakley - thumps MP3 player so while I drive and work outside the home I could listen to the podcast
Next step the only thing I asked for Christmas was XM radio - so once again I could listen to the station while driving.
Did your market research take this into account? What people who are listening are willing to pay for?
Premium membership $69.00/annual
MP3 player $300.00
XM radio receiver $100.00
XM subscription $145.00/annual
In addition to all of this, my investment in your organization has not had a great ROI. I, like you, I'm a business person. I know a great product and I know what the consumer is willing to pay for. I am your test case.
But again, as with my own business, if I do not put marketing and investment into my product and / or business then I will not get consumers to buy from me. That is your problem - and mark my words - what affliates are going to switch to Lionel from Stephanie Miller now? The affliates that are left have got great listeners and they are loyal to Steph.
If you wanted Lionel - who should have done what they did with Thom Hartman - bring in under an syndicate relationship then promote. Not replace your headliner...............................

Seems like Mr. Green has taken lessons from Bush. Replacing people that do a great job with one that is incompetent (Brownie = Lionel).

By ToniDiApril 13, 2007 - 10:38pmThe Future of AirAmerica
Some months ago Al Franken referred to Sam Seder as "the future of AirAmerica."
Well now thanks to Brainiac Mark Green, AirAmerica's future will be "the comedy stylings of Lionell ???!!! "
A few minutes ago I logged on to my "premium" AirAmerica account so I could
download Sam's last show .
On the welcome screen it said I had been a member for "2 years, 51 weeks." I will not make my 3 year anniversary next week because after I finish this comment I am "cancelling
my premium membership and all ties with AirAmerica, effictive immediately." I also
encourage others to do the same.
Ooooh I wonder what will be Mark Green's next brilliant programming move ??
Maybe he'll replace Randi Rhodes with the "Indianapolis Junior League POWER HOUR"

By mducoteApril 13, 2007 - 11:50pmBusiness Model
I would like to just say a few things about how bad of a decision demoting Sam Seder was from a pure business model. Now, I do have an MBA and that does not necessarily mean that I know more about good business models than anyone else - see George W Bush. But, I do not believe Mark Green has ever run either a successful business or even enterprise in his life (see mayoral campaign) and this first decision in his maiden voyage in radio proves my point.
First, as many people here have mentioned - you've got to do the market research before making a major decision in programming. It is easy enough to poll your audience and even focus grouping is relatively inexpensive to do. I cannot believe, in light of the outrage this decision has cause, that this most basic of reprogamming decision tools was used before deciding to replace Seder with "Lionel."
If you are not going to do that basic research, you better pretty damn well know your audience. No one who is AAR's supposed target audience is going to listen to "Lionel." Believe me. AAR is going to lose massive amounts of listeners in that slot because he is going to be unattractive to people who listen to the rest of the lineup. That's business school 101. Don't put porn in a store that sells bibles and don't put bibles in a store that sells porn.
Sheesh - no one actually needs to go to school at all to know that one. I simply don't get the decision making process behind this by guys who have just spent, by media accounts, a lot of their own money to buy this network, other than pure unadulterated ignorance of the market.
Finally, it was clear that Seder was surely and steadily building an audience. Now stay with me here - progressive radio as a network is very new - it needs time and patient capital to grow. Plus, as a lot of commenters have noted, the financial problems with AAR have had nothing to do with the talent but with the management. The constant tinkering with the lineup and jettisoning of talent is one of the major problems the AAR management has exhibited. Mark Green should have spent all his initial time with the network figuring out a good management structure and not allowed ANY programming changes for at least 6 months to a year while he figured out the business. (If he could). Making programming changes before getting hold of the reins of management and learning the business is idiotic from a business sense.
In addition, we need to keep in mind what the mission of progressive radio is supposed to be about. I firmly believe it is a profitable business model. But, like a lot of businesses, it needs patient capital to work. There are numerous industries, including things like STARTING A BRAND NEW RADIO NETWORK which are going to take years before they start turning a profit.
One of the things that has killed me about AAR is that everyone was so keen on it showing it could make a profit almost from day one to answer the right wing noise machine which said progressive radio wouldn't work when the IBC network or whatever it is called that runs Limbaugh, Hannity, et al. was more than content to lose money for a decade or more just to get their message out. And, then - hey - if they ended up being profitable eventually, that was great. But, all of those radio programs were loss leaders at the beginning. The thing that they had which apparently AAR talent has never had was patient support and a vision of what their bosses wanted them to accomplish as far as changing the perspective of the American public. They were highly successful in doing that. And, that change of perspective was part of their metric of success - not simply immediate ratings or $$s.
Is it too much to hope that a "liberal" like Mark Green can grasp this simple fact? That a measure of success for the business model for AAR should be about changing attitudes and perspectives of the public, not just getting anyone who might have somewhat superficial better ratings in the short run and on a totally different network to replace a host like Seder who is smart, extremely funny, "gets it", and has actually helped move the debate in this country. You have to have trust that Seder's wisdom and humor is what a huge market in America is longing for and will tune into once they have heard it and the ratings and $$s will come. Even if not, although I firmly believe Seder would have been a money-maker for the network in time, you are successful if you change attidues and perspectives. But, getting the public to hear your talent takes time and patience. Right wing radio has that patience. Will AAR "liberal" management have it?
What an absolute loss for the bottom line of AAR and for the country. I am very saddend to say this, but I am going to cancel my AAR premium membership, tune into Sam's show (and never Lionel's) on Sundays and then hope that Sam will get picked up by Nova M for 5 days a week.

By chirwaApril 14, 2007 - 12:33amWhere's the green?
Within the last week, I have been comforted & infused by the eloquent comments posted by so many of the listeners of Air America.
I imagine, so many were listening in the run up to the 2004 election...God. Franken, Mark, Marc, Seder, Jeaneane, Rhandi, Malloy, Kennedy, Papp, & Rachel, kept me informed & motivated. I believed my vote could take my country back. I also imagine, so many were inconsolable & despondent on the days after...I actually cried.
However, Franken talked me off the ledge...It wasn't over because we still had a venue & a voice. Eventually, we would be heard...I listened, as those heavy weight, talented & brilliant minds went without paychecks...Jobs for talented people with connections, are not difficult to find...
Air America, was a portal of sanity, for those old enough to remember Watergate. And for those of us who read "1984" in high school...Well, it was a place to make reference. Mike Malloy, read passages from the text.
Where are the REAL wealthy liberal patriots? I thought the Greens had pockets deep enough to go beyond the initial bottom line...I thought the Greens were doing a public service...I thought the Greens wanted to be a part of a movement to take our country back....I thought the Greens were going to lay it on the line...We are at a serious crossroads in this country. Air America is not about placating political cotton candy...EVERYTHING IS NOT ALRIGHT.
I thought the Greens were going to use the wealth & stature they are blessed with, to exercise their patriotism. Mark Green has an obvious axe to grind...He came on board & took it straight to the media, by putting Air America at the center of "moderating" the public political debate...That's really cool, however, what's going to happen when all those people he reaches from the democratic debates, actually tune into Air America? They will be met with the banal sounds of LIONAL!
How utterly ridiculous.
The Greens just got here & already want Air America in the black? How short sighted. How ultimately selfish.
Where are the true liberal patriots with cash? The ones with the real money? They have to be out there somewhere. The Forbes millionares/billionare list, rises each year exponentially. Where are the true liberals with "green" that actually care about the very pressing issues at hand?
We are on the very verge of impeaching the most corrupt administration in American history & Sam Seder, a harbinger of truth is canned, in favor of a political minstrel?
God, I wish I had a million dollars, or 10 million, or 20 or 30 million...Whatever. I wish I had it to spare. If I had more money than I would ever spend in a lifetime & still had some left to bequeath to heirs upon heirs...I'd glady dump it all into an enterprise for perpetuating truth in the face of the destruction of the constitution.
I surprise myself by how much I care....I'm obviously on a pulse. The same pulse that beats within all of us who care what we leave behind....It's mind blowing to think those guys who wrote the constitution, could be so prophetic.
Those guys were not broke. Those guys had a lot of cash. They put it on the line.

By SkitzoApril 14, 2007 - 1:11amSam supporter and Rachel
Ahh! here I am, after a long hiatus. Way back when AirAmerica left Sirius I have been holding my anger. Who knows where progressive radio will end up. I'm still a Sirius supporter, though the reason I first accepted Sirius was because of AirAmerica, which has left for XM. I listen on a local station in the Portland area. I support Sam Seder, and have liked him since early on, when he was with the hot babe co-host on Sirius. Now that I'm at a distance, I can't believe Sam is being dumped, especially for that stupid bastard who insulted Ms. Madow. That should be unacceptable but the newest owners of AirAmerica the orginators of stupidity. I don't give a rat's ass about who now owns AirAmerica, I think that there enough local progressive's that can support their local network broadcastors and maintain a good radio commentary base that we don't have to rely upon the 'great' thinking of millionaires and billionaires to relate to the populus. You should have kept Sam on every day, because to do otherwise is just stupid. So go ahead and put a GWBUSH stamp on your head, and tell everyone that means excellence. At least no one will belive you and you'll have your head and nuts removed before you can do more damage.

just finished watching PBS's interview of the talking heads on both sides. I want to know when the Republicans first decided that the war wasn't going their way. Now they claim that we have not waited long enough for change to occur. Is this true? Do we progressives expect change to occur to fast? I seem to remember that the President stood in front of a banner that Blarred "Mission Accomplished" on May 1 2003. That's 4 years ago. FOUR YEARS AGO. Now we are being told that progress is being made, for troops who's in field time has been extended a couple months. We don't know what the future in the Gulf of Arabia will be. There will be fighting, loss of life. Will this administrations let us know who will be put in harm's way? If the pastis a record, no one will know. We just have to lower our heads and accept that the military is doing the right thing. Seig Heil!!

Mr. Green,
Shunting Sam to a 3-hour slot on Sundays doing netroots(?) is a great way of getting rid of the one guy I enjoy listening to and get edified while doing it. I thought Sam was popular too but the new management decided otherwise. I wonder why. Is Sam fired for his views on Israeli-Palestinian dispute? Is it possible neocons bought up Air America? Are you a Manchurian candidate? Probably I am being unfair to you because of my grief. Forgive me for that.

By mattincinciApril 14, 2007 - 5:09amFailure of leadership: Seder is only the latest
I do NOT pretend to be a media know it all. There seem to be way too many of them stinking up the airwaves, already.
What AAR, and now Mr. Green, still fail to comprehend is leadership and capitalism.
If making money to stay in business is the objective, then cut and run, now. 9 out of 10 businesses fail because even, "experts," have no clue what a market will do. The only sure bet- in business as well as politics- is a fixed, corrupt, illeagal one.
Attracting advertising revenue by dumbing down the product line will leave AAR with (maybe) fat wallets and Imus in the Morning, Springer, Limpbough, Saint Jeziz Hannity. You can become the new GM. Meanwhile, the sane and sober among us will be taking our money over to Honda and Toyota. And when you wrap yourself in a flag and sing patridiotic songs in the dark, your former, "Base," will be giving you the finger- like to GM. Sure, you can then rig the market to lie, cheat and steal the American Dream like all good corporate titans and captitons of industry. But decent people will back you like they do Bush, Pat Robertson, the GOP. But those loyalists many among us who listened to Air America first come on the AMERICAN AIRWAVES and witnessed AAR go down the same tubes will have moved on long ago.
Loyalty is earned by leadership. Repeatedly slapping the end user of your medium to satisfy the advertising "base" will leave you raw, hungry and dirty. And THAT is just how your new Lords will love you: Gullable and weak to preach, sell and dictate the new Gospell of wealth and salvation.
Belly on up to the trough. But, true-grit Americans will stop slopping and sopping your filth and swill.
For the love of decency, please ask somebody who has demonstrated success- such as Colbert's and Stewart's producers- how they bring home the bacon. Surely, they would be all too happy to share the story of their success.
Morning Sedition's breakup was tragic disappointment. Malloy's firing was an outrage. Maron's departure was unbearable. How much more do you expect us to take? And if you think we are going to sit still for more Baseball, Apple Pie and Chevrolet cliche advertising for you to lick up more filthy lucre, then to hell with ya. And puke on ya, too.
I can find Hartmann and Randi elsewhere.

By purplerApril 14, 2007 - 5:13amThis is terrible
Mr. Green, you really don't get it. Why in the world would you fire a popular & much loved host like Sam & hire this Lionel guy? No one who listened to Sam's show will listen to him. Sam was the best. No one could or should take his place. Why do you want to alienate & anger the loyal listeners who have stuck with the network for 3 years, through bankruptcies, etc. We lost our radio station & got XM just to keep listening. Then you fire Sam? Why? This makes no sense. None. Everyone who listened to him will now listen to Stephanie Miller or to no one at all. Not to Lionel. I used to listen to Stephanie but when Sam moved to the same time I preferred him, no question, as did many other listeners, & I have not listened to Stephanie once since then. Why couldn't you promote & advertise his show, to try to get more listeners? If you want to sabotage & destroy Air America, you are doing an excellent job. Even your other hosts, such as Bobby Kennedy, can't understand why you did this. Why didn't you just add the Sunday show & leave Sam's weekday show alone? I have never been so disappointed. Up until now I praised & recommended AAR to so many people, but I will never do that again. For everyone reading this, stephaniemiller.com, you can stream the show from 9-12 while you are not listening to Lionel. I'll be back when Sam is back.
