News:
A massive rally to protest the White House’s policy of escalation in Iraq will take place tomorrow on the National Mall in Washington, DC, with similar events scheduled in dozens of cities around the country. Find all the details at United for Peace.
Good thing this was mentioned here.
Odds are the corporate media will have nothing to do with it.

By AntillectualJanuary 26, 2007 - 10:26amYou will never hear a word about it
or if you do, they will be denigrating little stories, talking about a "vocal minority with small crowds". Did anyone notice anything about protestors outside the White House after Bush's surge speech. I heard them yelling on MSNBC while David Gregory was reporting after the speech, and he did acknowledge their presence, but he didn't say more than one sentence about it, literally, and we don't know how many there were. They didn't even turn a camera on them.

"IF...it does descend into a chaotic mess of murder?"
Jesus Jumping Christ. If that doesn't already describe what's going on in Iraq, what is your definition of a chaotic mess?
1) Shiite death squads routinely kidnap Sunnis, torture and execute them, then leave their bodies where they can be conveniently found
2) Sunnis fire on Shiite mosques and explode carbombs in Shiite neighborhoods
3) The Shiite Prime Minister has a public screaming match with the highest ranking Sunni in the "sovereign" government of Iraq, about the provision of security
4) The most powerful armed force in Iraq is the Mahdi army (not best armed or trained, but most powerful in their capacity to influence events), the Shiite militia loyal to Moqtada al-Sadr.
Becomes a chaotic mess of murder? Rather than peace-keepers, if the conditions in Iraq "descended" into a chaotic mess that would probably represent an improvement in conditions, especially if our guys weren't in the crossfire.
BTW: I went to high school with Tim Robbins, and we did a report on the slaughter of people in the Sudan back in the late 1970's. It's about time the rest of the world woke up to it.

[...]
"240 billion dollars in tax breaks for corporations. 36 billion dollars in tax breaks for small businesses. Increase in productivity -- 42 percent over the last 10 years," yelled Kennedy emotionally. "But do you think there's any increase in the minimum wage? No. At 12 after five today, on Thursday, I speak for all of our Democrats and say we're prepared to vote now. Now!"
"Do you have such disdain for hard-working Americans that you want to pile all your amendments on this? Why don't you just hold your amendments until other pieces of legislation? Why this volume of amendments on just the issue to try and raise the minimum wage? What is it about it that drives you Republicans crazy? What is it? Something. Something! What is the price that the workers have to pay to get an increase? What is it about working men and women that you find so offensive?"
And at this early stage of the 110th Congress, Kennedy has already had it with the hypocrisy that has always characterized the Republicans in dealing with Senate Democrats -- and he called them on it.
"We don't want to hear any more from that side for the rest of this session about permitting or not permitting votes in here when you're denying it on the most simple concept of an increase in the minimum wage," said Kennedy. "We don't want to hear any more about that."
"This is filibuster by delay and amendments. I've been around here long enough to know it when I see it and smell it, and that's what it looks like, that's what it is, make no mistake about it. Make no mistake about it."

BTW the candidates with most likelyhood of success at the presidency would be governors over congressman. It's too easy to list votes in congress against a candidate. People don't understand votes against bills because of some attatchement or procedural votes vs. actual passing of bill votes. It's too hard to explain the reasons against the spin machine.

By jumpingjackflashJanuary 26, 2007 - 5:51pmLearn some history JJ
Following the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu, President EISENHOWER (a Republican, if memory serves) authorized the first set of "military advisors" to be deployed to South Vietnam. In fact the Green Berets modeled their headgear after the berets worn by French Airborne troops stationed in French Indochina (later Vietnam). Kennedy added to their numbers, as did LBJ and then Nixon (who added Cambodia and Laos to the coverage map).
Who got us in? Eisenhower. KEEP IN MIND (capped for added attention getting in distractable conservatives): A Democratic president HAD an opportunity to "get us into" Iraq, and was wise enough not to. The no-fly zones worked well enough to contain Hussein. No anti-aircraft artillery targeting or firing on allied aircraft EVER struck a coalition air force plane (U.S. or Brit). Meanwhile, Hussein was physically contained and Iraq posed no threat to its neighbors or to us. Be careful what you wish for, JJ.

Tricky Dick "I have a secret plan to end the war in Vietnam" (Yeah: Let it run another 5 years, get another 13,000 guys KIA and get myself re-elected) was the landlord from January 20, 1969 until his resignation in August, 1974. He left Gerry Ford to preside over the last guys turning off the lights and jumping on the landing skids of the last HUEY's to leave the embassy rooftop in 1975.
