Last Show
Well, Sheeple-
1-877-520-1150 should work tonight. This is our first and last remote. It might not be a smooth as we'd like. We'll give it a try.
This is it. This is really the end for me at Air America Radio it seems. What a prolonged and painful journey this has been. The great thing about the entire smear of time that has been the last couple of years is that I had such an amazing bunch of listeners and amazing staffs on both shows. I also seemed to have learned to do radio a bit along the way. I do want to thank all of you who are reading this as well as Jim Earl, Bill Kollar, Brendan McDonald, all the amazing perfromers that have appeared on the show and all the guests. I'll try to keep you informed as to what is happening. I guess until I get a new site up you can find me on myspace. AND, in all honesty, I want to thank Air America Radio for giving me the oppurtunity to speak out and entertain without ever getting involved in content or telling me what to say.
That's that. Firetruck!
Love,
Maron

Post. Post. Post. Post. Post.
And guys, I'm in my lithography class right now and in a crystal clear moment I've figured out what I'm gonna work on for the next few days.... a few clues:
1. Philosopher Kings and Queens.
2. Working class heroes.
3. Progressive Utopians with no sense of humor.
4. NOT iron-on transfers.
5. Series.
6. Sending Marc one, once I'm done.

...show ever. I have a feeling you guys (or some of you guys) will be back, somehow, somewhere, even if not on AAR.
Marc, I give you a lot of credit for thanking AAR, too. Very classy. And I must say I've been continually amazed by how they've not tried to muzzle your honest, open, way of describing what's happened during negotiations and your own feelings about the suits. So give 'em a small bit of credit, listeners--at many other networks Marc wouldn't have been able to tell us all what went down.
Life will go on after this last show, but it won't be as fun...
Best wishes to Marc, Jim, the crew, and everyone on the blog.

As far as I'm concerned, your interviewing skills far surpass those of anyone in the MSM as well as on AAR. Thank you, thank you! Have a great last show - I'll be listening!! So Maron's analogy of his situation with AAR last week was that of a battered wife.
My analogy to this show ending is like I just got off a great rollercoaster that I want to get right back on again, only I see this long, long line that winds around farther than the eye can see, with no end in sight. So I just walk to the next ride hoping it won't suck.

"We plan to stay in contact with him for future opportunities as we see him as an important asset to this network." Those are the exact words used in the email they sent me in reply to my complaint. I was disappointed that Sinton did not reply to me himself, but evidently dumped the job on some intern or something.

By MotowngirlJuly 14, 2006 - 12:59pmSame form here, too. But I replied anyhow.
Thank you so much for writing, Mr. Horn. I am impressed that you would take the time to do so.
There's something, however, that I just don't get.
Why was there no discernable effort for AAR to support The Marc Maron Show? I understand syndication takes resources, but AAR never even bothered to simply put the show on it's alternate stream ala Thom Hartman. Many people had severe problems streaming KTLK, and many preemptions. Only the most enthusiastic could hang in through the difficulties of simply accessing the show.
Who is at fault for leaving the show "only web-based to the network"? It really seemed that AAR countenanced failure. How could you possibly have expected Marc to feel comfortable with a new offer after what amounts to abandonment of the current venture?
Are Springer's numbers working for you? I have no idea, but I can't stand his show, nor can the many AAR listeners who I know. That slot would have been, IMO, perfect for Marc. Many AAR shows originate outside your NY infrastructure, and 6AM in L.A. would have made it possible for Marc to get guests there, where he already had a great show lacking only accessability.
I'm certain you are acting in the interest of your investors, but the audacious spirit with which AAR was created is now lost. The enthusiasm of your listeners is slipping away. Some are now actually depressed. AAR is in it's own little quagmire. What was once a venture is now just a business fixated on it's bottom line.
It's hard to get excited about that.

By jorogoJuly 14, 2006 - 1:53pmBye bye Air America
The irony of this "progressive" station is immense. How they've gone from the genuine hope shown in "left of the dial" to this shit-bag move amazes and saddens me. Maybe we'll end up with Franken and Springer in constant rotation pushing their political careers (and financial gain). Marcs only problem is that he is too funny for these cretins to understand. In fact, fuck "left of the dial" it should have been called "Designed to fail". One day there will be a true progressive station worthy of real talent and maybe if we're all lucky Marc and Jim will be able to take time off from the global edition of whatever successful show each is doing and give us some radio funny.
Till then... F.U.A.A.R (sam's nearly got it)

"Dear Dave:
Your email about Marc Maron was forwarded along to me, thank you so much for relaying your passion about Marc with us. As you know, his last show is tonight. Unfortunately we tried to make it work where he could return to NYC in a larger role and do a show out of NY where our infrastructure is, the show in LA was not under our control and was only web-based to the network-but he is unable to return to NYC at this time. We plan to stay in contact with him for future opportunities as we see him as an important asset to this network.
Thank you for your support and for being an Air America listener.
Hope you have a good weekend.

By seagillanJuly 14, 2006 - 12:57pmI'm not saying good bye until I have to
I wrote to Jon Sinton and praised Marc yet again, and thanked Sinton for his patience in dealing with us, and his willingness to read and respond to so much of what the fans wrote. His reply was very nice and non-committal but he complimented me on my eloquence and so I decided to share the letter. I doubt Marc and Jim are blogging today since they have more fun things to do in San Diego, but hopefully Marc will get to read the relevant paragraph.
****************************************
I'm sad to hear that Marc Maron is parting company with Air America Radio, and I realize he was demanding more money than the network could afford. But in my heart I can't bring myself to hold that against him. As I'm sure hundreds of his fans have already said to you, Marc had been jerked around many, may times by the network and he always stood strong and stoic, doing what needed to be done. For that, he surely deserved just recompense. And if his chosen compensation to be jerked around again was to ask for an substantial increase in salary, that's his right. I imagine that's what it would take to convince him to relocate his entire life YET AGAIN. I suspect the desire for a higher salary was somehow related to either a need to commute to Los Angeles at least weekly to be with his wife, or perhaps to make up for her losing a good portion of her career by moving to be with him.
That said, I still want you to know how much I appreciate your concern and your willingness to share with us fans such information and encouragement as you were able to.
And I want to share with you my most striking memory of Marc Maron on Air America Radio. It was the morning of November 3, 2004. The election had just been conceded by John Kerry. I woke up already depressed. My clock radio clicked on. And there was the voice of Marc Maron, whom I had long associated with comic depression, speaking with such positive energy, trying like hell to rile us up and get us on our feet and fighting. He brought me back into reality. I will never forget that, and I have long credited Air America Radio for keeping me from giving up at that point. And it's all due to Marc Maron.
Unfortunately, good things come to an end eventually and this eventuality has come sooner than I would have liked. I wish there were some way to bring Marc back into the AAR lineup, but for the moment that looks unlikely. I can't afford to continue my Premium subscription, even at the 1 show rate, when there is no show I'll be downloading. I hope there's a way to stop it before I get charged again. I'll continue to listen to AAR some, and I hope any new shows are as good as a lot of what's gone before.
Again, thanks for being so willing to be our sounding board.

Sure, he seemed to have felt like he should feel guilty, but I agree with you! And him! Although it seems like he is letting us fans down, we would be letting him down by denying him that. It is, in my mind, totally understandable. His actions are totally commendable, and when you look at what else AAR has to offer, even more-so. The revelation that they offered him the morning spot again seemed to be very revealing! They shot themselves in the foot last November, and just now noticed the hole when they stubbed their toe.

Overdone possibly insincere. How about, I hope the mother-fuckers who never gave you a fair shake regret it... boy that doesn't sound good either. This is hard. But I really loved having Marc Maron on Air America, it was a big draw to me and a hell of a lot more interesting than just humor or just politics can be, it's a damn good mix. Hopefully will not miss you for long and we can all get our Maron fix another way.
*****
Sucks, all day yesterday I couldn't get on any AAR site (except MR for some reason) couldn't get any of the podcasts)... lost power for like 3 hours. But I did manage to listen to part of the 3/18/05 Morning Sedition, since I had no recent podcasts, particularly Rapture Watch and the chat after was GREAT. So Jim, in my dark (literally) bitter hours with no food or power, stuck home because I coudn't open the garage from outside, lamenting the loss of the Marc Maron show, you reached out from the past and told Marc to enjoy his interview with Colonel Klink or that Chicken guy and made me laugh so hard I almost fell off the stool and actually killed myself. ;-)

By darkjstzJuly 14, 2006 - 1:21pmMan! I have learned so
Man! I have learned so much!
Your shows were the only ones on all of AAR that actually had interviews! All that is left now is an ocassional guest who just spreads more liberal talking points, and there aren't even any liberal talking point memos! They only address the topical issues of the current news day. They also have ranting and raving hosts whose primary job seems to be to disagree with callers, not unlike the 'popular' format of right wing radio.
Man! Who else would entertain Jim's notions of meat-eating being a political, nay, a greater-than-polotics-alone issue that effects us all, and then book a guest who was not already on-hand or on-call to address only today's news topics? Who else dug up info on decent transportation? (Since the interview with Ed Beagley and the electric-car guy I knew what to look for and actually found out that the owner of the Kenai, AK, Arby's apparently drives one of those vegetable oil deisels! Gonna get in touch with him!)
If I want to hear vehemently rhetorical diatribes, I can just tune in to Rush or O'Reilly and mentally negate everything I hear. The emotional rush will still be there, and I can root for the disconnected callers, and feel like I am the underdog all over again!
Boo to AAR! I want to learn! I also want a little bit of The Funny! I don't want it strained and construed and assigned to short segments after the bumper and before the ranting again!
You guys re-invented radio, gave it class and an edge, something it hasn't had since the Thirties, and then it was pretty lame, but plenty inventive. AAR doesn't know what it is doing to itself.
Man! I'm mad! What do I do now? Go back to NPR's 'Science Friday,' 'Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me,' 'This American Life,' 'On the Media,' and 'Car Talk?' (Er, wait, not the last one, their podcast is a premium offer...)

Interesting turn of a phrase there, Marc. IT SEEMS that somewhere in the back of your mind you know you'll be back. Maybe you don't have a conscious awareness of it. Maybe you can't imagine it. But it only SEEMS that it's the end of your relationship with Air America. It SEEMS to me the door is still open, that Air America still wants you, and that someday you'll be back.

MS started around the same time I moved to DC and started my job, now, just as I am about to leave, it goes off of the air. This was another great bit. "Dude, they crap in their pants"; "Isn't it time they died already?"

That was one of the funniest bits ever on MS.

By darkjstzJuly 14, 2006 - 3:15pmWhat made it great too...
...was when Marc was hosting for Randi and Lewis Black was on and they replayed that. It was Black's reaction and mine, both hearing for the first time, that solidified my love of that skit and what MS was about.

By RppPolypJuly 14, 2006 - 9:13pmThanx Guys
Thanks Marc & Jim (and Kent, Bruce et al.) for great shows.
I have always believed that on the radio it is possible to do ANYTHING. You guys have created whole characters with back-stories and on-going lives that would never work on TV. And all this is available while you're driving your car, or in the can or working at your computer (oops) or walking with your IPod. Damn it you can do anything on the radio IMMEDIATELY with little or no production effort except comic genius - which you all have in spades.
AAR has simply fucked up.
Funnily, I don't think you guys ar especially high-maintenance - you just don't suffer fools gladly - and that's a good thing that appeals to most of the kind of people who would listen to a network like AAR. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
Firetruck !!
They're using Horse bombs, Oxen bombs and Ass bombs. You mean their blowing up donkeys? I WISH !!! ....funny stuff. I'll miss it all.

By RppPolypJuly 14, 2006 - 9:27pmso long and thanks for all the _FUNNY_!
Something I don't think AAR understands how far out of talk radio I was before the little AM station started broadcasting in Boston. (it's actually two stations, but the signals are so weak, one is for north of the city and one is better to the west.)
I had to train myself to listen commercial radio after so many years of NPR and adult oriented rock, now my day is structured by it. Granted the ads are a pain but I accept their honestly in begging for my money and attention. The content of the shows is what I need to hear.
One more premium listener, signing off.

By RppPolypJuly 15, 2006 - 1:24amGoldwater
Ok, I finally get their game plan. Move the right so far to the far right that Barry Goldwater '64 seems middle of the road. So the only alternative to the ultra fascist rightwing vultures are the democrats who seem more like mid 60's Goldwater Republicans.
What then happens to the left? There is no left. Mission accomplished.

By ProgressiveSpiritJuly 14, 2006 - 3:19pmTMMS is wearing me out...
By mid-week, I am haggard-looking and stumbling into the furniture. Staying up too late to listen every night. TMMS has been hard on me; I need the intelligence and humor of the show but also need my sleep. By Wednesday each week, I hate myself. I hung in expecting it to be syndicated at any time. Can't afford the premium, can't get recording software to work on my ancient Mac; just have to stay up and listen every night. Learned a lot about bittorrents and streaming, at least!
Thanks guys for putting your heart into your shows. I don't think AAR's position reflects on the quality of the Maron show at all; they're still coming to grips with their MS mistake. No one is mad at you for your decision. My favorite way to listen to you is live, on free airwaves, and in the morning when the ideas and humor you excite in me can have the rest of the day to play out. But I am really disappointed in AAR that they can't come forward with a better deal. It's been tough being Marc and Jim. It's been tough being their fans. We need some recognition and respect, all of us. If you felt the deal they offered was more exploitive than respectful, you were right to refuse it.
Now I'll get some sleep. But I continue to hope (what else can I do about this or any of my other struggles?). I believe Marc can turn AAR's ship around too. I believe they can find the $$$s. I sincerely hope they do.
Dreaming of the live remote the crew does from my town some day, and still waiting to be "thrilled" about something,
Colette

By ColetteLBJuly 14, 2006 - 3:25pmSAD
This is a very sad day for ALL of us, the many who invested so much time, faith, and money into Morning Sedition, TMMS, and AAR in general. Marc, Jim, & Co. did a wonderful job throughout the past 2+ years. I am so sad at this time because the Maron crew has become such a big part of my life & daily routine. I hope that we hear from all of you again soon.
I am now such a big fan of Marc & Jim - It is such a travesty the AAR will not ante-up in recognition of the uncanny effort of Maron & Co. in spite of such terrible treatment by AAR management. Although selfishly disappointed, I respect Marc for his decision not to give in to AAR feable offers for a second time. In the unintellible word of the shrub, "Fool me once, shame on me...won't get fooled again!"
I anxiously await new info on Marc & Jim's next move. Until then...FIRETRUCK!
Best to all,
Steve Garcia

By thomwinJuly 14, 2006 - 4:23pmYeah but guys...
Don't forget that we're gonna have a kick-ass show tonight!
The final MS was one for the archives to be listened to again and... well, you've got to stop at a certain point.
So let's bring on the funny tonight! And the Franken impression! AND SOMEONE WHO'S ATTENDING BETTER BRING A CAMERA PHONE OR HAVE WIRELESS AND A CAMERA TO POST PHOTOS DURING THE SHOW!!! And busting AAR's chops! And busting the Democrats' chops! And the Republicans'! And talk about the speculative investigators! And CATS! TALK ABOUT THE CATS! TALK ABOUT MISHNA! JIM, TALK ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND TIP-TOE AROUND YOUR CONFIDENTIALITY-AGREEMENT WITH THE DAILY SHOW!
And bring on the sentimitality as well... but MAN! I can't get all mascara-messy this early in the evening. :(
