TODAY'S SHOW: FRIDAY AUGUST 31ST 2007

By Vanessa Silverton-Peel
Irwini

This is an Elseya Irwini turtle, named after the late Steve Irwin who discovered it.  It is in danger of becoming extinct, which is sad.  It also breathes out of its butt, which is funny.

Moving on.

Rachel will be joined by Salon.com writer Glenn Greenwald who will be talking about how "unforgivable" the GOP finds Larry Craig's malfeasance, but how totally forgivable all the other hooker scandals have been.  "Cost-free moralism," it's a great political investment!

And then the band Ozomatli joins Rachel in studio to talk about their new album and what it's like to form a band at a union rally.

MENTIONED ON TODAY'S SHOW

Vatican Air has its own special set of security problems

Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California are suing the Bush Administration due to an invasive new questionnaire on loyalty

Solomon Island man who saved John F. Kenney's life during World War II is finally honored by the US Navy.  Bonus: They fixed his roof

The Justice Department is having a tough time convincing its own attorneys to prosecute GITMO detainees

Millions of White House emails were mysteriously lost.  Weirder?  That a private company was in charge of them.  Weirder still?  The White House will not release the name of that company.

MISSING: Nuclear bomb parts, REWARD: Living in a country without loose nukes

And Rachel's suggested Labor Day weekend creep-you-out reading, brought to you by The New Republic

Monks

Today on Kent Jones Now, Shaolin monks bested by ninjas?  Of course you know, this means war.

All right, Rachel, this isn't fair.

I'm sure you know that this is a three-day weekend; the last of the summer to boot.  Which means a lot of people--even die-hard fans--will be thinking, "Boy, I could get a head-start of I leave now, but then I'd miss TRMS."  That last part is hard enough.  But now you had to go an tantalize folks with the "butt-breathing turtle".  How, I ask, can anyone even think of going off without having heard Rachel's and/or Kent's  (ahem) "poop" on that one?

The best-laid plans, mice, men, aglay, all that.

:cheese:

Yeah, that's it, I'm not taking a long weekend now

How could I miss the turtle?

Never mind that I'll be standing in front of a Xerox machine this weekend copying my freakin' syllabus and Week #1 problem set.  I'll tell my students that it's TRMS' fault I worked all weekend and they're getting an assignment on the first day of class on Tues! :p

Maybe you could get an extra day's grace, chemgirl...

...if you told your students "a butt-breathing turtle inhaled my syllabus, etc."

That's it?

Just, "Hey, there's a turtle in Australia that breaths through it's butt"?  Damn; I wanted to know, if it gets heartburn, can it light its own farts?  But now, I fear I never shall.

!G'Freakday, Rachelistas!

The Apparent Trap: Were Craig's civil rights violated?

Let me be clear from the start: I'm not advocating or condoning sexual behavior in public. But setting up a sting operation in a public  men's restroom and pressuring the suspect/victim to confess when no overt sexual behavior was committed would appear to be a violation of Larry Craig's civil rights....

By defining any sort of homosexual activity as immoral behavior, homosexuals were presumed guilty before being proven innocent just by being homosexual, whether or not anyone could prove any sort of same-sex contact had taken place. Such presumption is reflected in the airport officer's (mis)leading interrogation while attempting to obtain a "confession" from Larry Craig.

Here's former attorney and Air America host Lionel's intelligent take on the Craig "entrapment": WELL, IT'S OFFICIAL; LARRY CRAIG IS GUILTY OF NOTHING : "Whether Craig’s gay and whether he may have solicited someone before are irrelevant considerations.  This “prior bad acts” evidence would most probably be excluded via a pretrial motion in limineAs far as this case goes, Craig was guilty of nothing.  Nada This cop should be reprimanded for, er, blowing the case.  His hastiness in, er, pinching Craig in this ex-prosecutor’s opinion was an indicium of shoddy police work.  No jury or trier of fact could or would have found Craig guilty of anything.  Again, why he pleaded guilty is a mystery.  As far as I’m concerned, the last time I checked, an acquittal was a good thing and rather dispositive of the matter.  So go figure. ... As ol’ Elliot Ness, the men’s room stall centurion, quipped (I swear): He didn’t want to turn this into a, er, pissing match.  Well, too late."

If you weren't already aware, all airport areas, including restrooms, now have 24/7 camera surveillance. If Craig indeed committed some sort of sexual misconduct, why didn't Karsnia tell him, "We have you on camera"? And why not produce the actual video of the purported activity, instead of the audio of the arresting officer's leading interrogation? Because there was no crime committed.

If you just want to prevent cruising in men's rooms, put up a prominent sign saying THIS AREA UNDER VIDEO SURVEILLANCE. That's enough to make any man's woody go south – well, except the most severe voyeurs, perhaps. On the other hand (the one not waving under the stall divider), if you want to trap closeted queers, put undercover cops in toilet stalls when they should be attending to more important security matters in an international airport.

So, while Larry Craig's case may not then construed as entrapment, he would appear to have been trapped. The difference is in the intention of the law officer. But in either case, it appears that Craig's civil rights were violated.

Whether or not Larry Craig is heterosexual, he has the opportunity for a whopper of a lawsuit against Officer Karsnia. If he pursues that, GLBTQ activists might find themselves in the very queer position of having to defend Senator Craig's civil liberties to be (and behave like) a homosexual, whether or not he actually is homosexual.

Ron, help me out here...

...Am I on the "dark side" with this issue...? Help me out here because I do not give a damn what happens to Craig because he chose to be on the side of people who are committed to demonizing gay people. He came out against gay marriage and laws which protect the rights of gays and lesbians. Yet, he was caught cruising slimy public bathrooms for gay sex. Yeah, looking for love in all the wrong places. He chose his side, the side of the Ann Coulters and others who hate our guts and do not care if we live or die, certainly not the side of  those who are committed to protecting those of who who are trying to live dignified lives as American citizens... Gays and lesbians, all of us are family, regardless of race, creed, color and gender, that is our connection...Craig went to the wrong side of our family, for whatever reason and right now, I am feeling a bit like the Michael Corleone character in Godfather 2 when he chastised his brother, Fredo with, "Fredo, I love you and you are my brother, but don't ever take sides against the family...EVER..."

Are we to feel sorry that the homophobes Craig chose to side with against the rest of our family are now kicking his sorry ass....Maybe it is just me...Maybe I have spent too much time on gay teen hotlines talking gay teens out of suicide, sometimes successful, sometimes not... Maybe I am haunted by the image of Matthew Shepard dying in that lonely field all by his lonely himself, maybe it is just me...Those are the ones I feel compassion for from the bottom of my soul. But the last person I will feel any compassion for is Craig, a man with some power, a man who could have made a difference had he only cared, even just a little bit, about us, his own people... All right, I will say it, I do not care if he was "entrapped" or whatever because he bought it on himself...All right, I will say it, CRAIG, GOOD FOR YOUR ASS...Craig did not feel a connection with any of us, yes, that makes me despise him, because he distanced himself from those of us who are working for a better world for gays and lesbians and for that, I am having trouble trying to feel compassion for him and the position he is in...

This issue is too close to my soul, I am declaring a moratorium on this subject... It is a long weekend and I am going to have too many Becks and hold onto Jessica a little longer this weekend because I need too...

Happy Labor Day, all...

You didn't ask me, grissy...

...but I'm gonna chime in, anyway.

When the swine from the American Nazi Party wanted to march in Skokie, IL, many years ago, the ACLU defended their right to do so--and some of the lawyers coming to the shitheads' defense were Jewish.  And how many times have we heard the old saw:  "I disagree with everything you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"?

If we start allowing the rights of even those we abhor to be violated--even monumental scumbags like Rove or Cheney--then we open the door for repression of everyone who doesn't toe the line, however that line may be defined at any given time, in any given place.  Thus, if Craig was indeed entrapped, then we should all shout loudly for his civil rights to be protected, because in doing so, we ultimately protect our own as well.

That said:  have a couple of cold ones for me.  And don't forget, in the immortal words of Ben "Freak-on" Franklin, to "Fart Proudly".  ;-)

Feeling bad for Tony Snow

Rachel

I feel bad for Tony, too. I mean, with George W. Bush asserting as a known fact that he will beat the cancer, it certainly does not bode well for Tony. I mean, Bush has such a stellar record on such things. That really was my immediate thought - Bush saying it is almost like a death sentence.

I'll pray for Tony.

Peace All!

Vitter versus Craig........................

This is not a belief of mine but christians believe that it's better for a man to plant his seed in the belly of a whore than to spill it on the ground. According to them a bible says a seed spilled on the ground is wasteful.

So since David Vitter availed himself to the services of a hooker he is not subject to the same scrutiny from religious conservatives who think they are doing gods work. Larry tried to engage a homosexual act. Men think it's disgusting for to men to get together, but enjoy the thought of two women getting together for a tryst.

Paraphilic infantilism

Paraphilic infantilism is a paraphilia characterized by the desire to wear diapers and be treated as a helpless infant. One who engages in infantilistic play is known as an adult baby (AB). About one in three adult babies is also a diaper lover (DL) so they are collectively known as AB/DLs. The majority of infantilists are heterosexual males.

This from wikipedia

This what David Vitter was into when he went to the D.C. Madam. We studied this psyche class, some who engage in this have mother fetish. They liked to be taken care of.

"Like to be taken care of"

"Mother fetish".

Card-carrying neo-cons often accuse those whom they call "liberals" or "progressives" of wanting to establish a "nanny state".  "Oh, grow up!" they demand.  "Quit looking to Mama Gummint to take care of you.”

But it sounds like this very attitude is foundational to the above-mentioned syndrome.  Just one more example of people being virulently opposed to something that they secretly are themselves, or else wish for?

Skool daze

O.k., I promise, no more 1st-day-of-school anecdotes ... after this one (and, well, until the next one):

This past week, I met my 4 new first-year advisees and discussed their academic programs for the start of their college careers.  Our students don't declare a major until the end of their 4th semester, so the first-years only have academic "preferences," per se.  But our Dean's Office does a good job of matching first-years interested in science with advisers from science depts.

Anyhoo, in what may be a world record, one of my advisees emailed me this morning (time stamp, 2:22am) with a stream-of-consciousness message -- the train of thought is priceless -- saying she wants to transfer.  I should add that this student has been on campus for FIVE days and has not yet even set foot in a single classroom or lab.  Ah, 18-year-olds, they crack me up.  :)

Last Tuesday's Larry Craign comments were a HOOT!!

Rachel and Kent -- your comments last Tuesday on Larry and his "I am not gay" comments rank as some of the funniest commentary. I tried to explain them to some friends when we went to see Will Durst that evening, but I should really make sure that I save the podcast from Tuesday -- your reactions to his thanking people for coming out -- OMG!!

I have a gay brother and I care about the issue but Craig's hypocrisy is fair fodder for humor. Thanks, both of you, for being there and illuminating Craig and so many other issues.

Peace Hugs,
Kate Anne

Remember the term "situational ethics"?

Neo-cons and their progenitors have been using it for years to tar "lib'ruls" with the brush of hypocrisy.  Bun now we have Ed Gillespe stating:  "The fact is that Sen. Craig pled guilty to a crime, and therefore was convicted of a crime. Sen. Vitter has not been charged with a crime, let alone convicted of one. So there's a pretty big distinction here."  Pretty big if you're talking to Fox "News", anyway.  It would seem that fine legal distinctions do indeed take primacy over questions of ethics, at least when the GOP is involved.

Or, to put it another way, apparently what matters is, to quote the much-maligned (by the right) ex-VP Al Gore: "controlling legal authority".

global poverty

(Reply)   (Spam) I would like to see presidential candidates support global poverty, especially republicans we see that the focus of most candidates has been "fighting" immigration but I believe that global poverty and immigration have to do with the same core issue. If we focused on fighting global poverty there would be less need for people to leave their countries in search of a better future.
