CLOSE GUANTANAMO
Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink 4 Peace, joins Maddow from Cuba to discuss Guantanamo. She was part of a protest there yesterday to close the base down.
NEXT
Dave Itzkoff, “Across the Universe” Columnist for the New York Times Book Review, joins Rachel to discuss the mad, deluded, deranged world of one Michael Crichton.
LACKING ARMOR
Bush wants to send more troops to Iraq but with what kind of armor?
MUST READ
There's a chilling op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, a compilation of letters from a Guantanamo detainee, that's a must read.
NO EXPERT
Why does our new Defense secretary keep insisting that he's no expert on just the things he's supposed to know about?
It may be 40 degrees below zero, but at least Alaskans get to see a comet that may be the brightest in decades.

RACHEL MADDOW SHOW, PLEASE HELP !!
Your affiliate in D.C. is often screwed up. In the 6 O'clock hour tonight (and last night!) first we had the 17 news cuts from CNN, and now (6:50 p.m.) it's playing "The Business Shrink with Peter Morris".
I am god-damned tired of these goddamn computer run radio stations. Isn't anyone listening ????!!!! Can't anyone do something ????
I have repeatedly requested a backdoor number to the station to help with these feed problems, to no avail. No one is listening. I am TIRED of WWRC being the poor step-child of the Clear Channel stations in Washington. I notice that CONSERVATIVE talker WTNT never has these kinds of problems or problems with rejoinders, etc.
I am calling all Washington, D.C. listeners to arms. Help me help us get a responsive radio station, that plays the god-damn show!!!!!!!

By BlueBerryPickNJanuary 12, 2007 - 7:22pmFRANCE24 24-hours International News Webcast
Gordon Peterson II http://personal.terabites.com
Dunno how many of y'all have discovered this one yet... but it is WONDERFUL... mms://live.france24.com/france24_en.wsx (the new FRANCE24 24-hours international news webcast... live from Paris... most of the day that link gives you the English feed (there are several hours a day their English feed gets the French version instead).
They air a ten-minute newscast twice an hour, on the hour and on the half-hour. Each is followed by a minute or two of international weather (climatic conditions and temperatures of various cities around the globe). The remainder of the half hour is filled with more in-depth coverage, talk shows, interviews, culture, personalities, arts, and other fascinating stuff... including (very) occasional commercials too, which are actually generally interesting enough to be worth watching... stuff that you normally would not see on US television.
This is what CNN should have been but never really was. For example, I watched Shrub's speech on France24, and they covered not just his speech but also DID air the Democratic response (apparently unlike ANY of the US networks). They had both Arabic experts and other folks there, to discuss Shrub's speech and the Democratic response.
Even better, when France24 aired the Saddam hanging video, they did a running translation and commentary on it, including subtitles for the non-Arabic speakers.... explaining (which I haven't seen anywhere else, including on Air America) that the verbal harassment on Saddam was NOT from the guards/executioners, but from members of the audience/observers... and the executioners begged for decorum, something like, "Please, I beg of you... this is an execution!". The BEST coverage I saw was on France24.
France24 has rapidly become my FAVORITE international news coverage. Very much a class act.
Another EXCELLENT find is the new Democracy Player (http://www.getdemocracy.org), a very cool freeware video webcast player which provides literally hundreds of "channels" of free alternative video programming... including incredibly interesting videocasts from Baghdad, Democracy Now! (a GREAT one-hour daily political newscast), Media Matters for America, a great National Geographic channel, and in general all kinds of extremely interesting and completely free video content. The program is intended to be left running on your computer all the time, and downloads stuff to your hard drive in background so it is ready for viewing whenever you like (and will automatically purge "stale" stuff after a few days, so your hard disk doesn't just fill up). HIGHLY recommended.
Between Air America, Democracy Player, and France24... who needs the right-wing biased news coverage of the so-called "mainstream" US media networks??
Check EACH of these out...!

“Diversity IS Life: The Influence of Recombination on Human Genetic Diversity
ya think researchers have our best interests @ heart? If researchers can patent a bacterium, why can't they patent tinkered organs?
First I've heard of Michael Crichton's viewpoint. I've heard said that he's a bit of a sleezy, egotistical schill, but think about this.
*** International law can't even protect CHILDREN from sex slavery or having their organs sold off - MUCH LESS ensuring that indigenous peoples retain the rights to the DNA of local medicines... who says NO to a bloody BioResearch organization. Its not in the individual's best interest to say NO.
The US can't even keep BigSugar out of the USDA Food Pyramid.

What is good for an INDIVIDUAL isn't necessarily good for all people. Think about sickle cell anemia. Bad shit, without a doubt. But GOOD for the species if we live with malarial infection threats - that's just a minor example. But with sickle cell, an individual lives long enough to reproduce. We don't even know why the blood brain barrier is seemingly protected by malaria, if you contract syphilis.
maybe we should know MORE before we fuck with the defaults?
If we can't be sure our environment or economy is secure, can we? What if, in 3K years, all living creatures on the planet have lost the latent abilities that have stood the test of millennia... within our DNA.
Methinks there is no 1:1 relationship in DNA & expressed traits. if we can't keep from developing 'I use antibacterial soap so I can grow scarier bacteria in my shower' experiments, then maybe we are trying to run before we walk.

It's 11:18 pm and still no podcast for download.
I know, I'm being petty but I actually paid for that crazy AirAmerica premium service.
I'm sure there's probably only one lone person who uploads the shows and can't be expected to work 24/7/365, but anything you can do to get it online by the 10 pm promise time will be greatly appreciated. Honest!

Isn't it ironic that Condaleeza Rice should use the French-origin word "augmentation" (from French "augmenter" = to increase) as a euphimism for "surge"? Isn't she a member of the Bush administration which has made America sneer at France--one of our oldest allies--since they refused to go into Iraq with us? And, gee...weren't they right not to?!
Even if George Bush has found God, it hasn't saved him from being an idiot and We the People should kick him out of our White House.
