Embarassing Announcements

By Rachel Maddow
I don't think it's just me. I think that the Bush Camp David statement on Friday really was strange.
Bush derailing at Camp David

The video clip is here at the washington post website.  Watch through the initial chestpounding until the part where he um... loses.. his... uh... train of ... what was I saying?

As government announcements go, though, I think this one might top Bush's Friday follies:Doku Umarov

Russia briefly seemed to have scored a strategic and public relations victory in its war with Chechen separatists when the pro-Kremlin Chechen government announced yesterday that the leader of the rebels, Doku Umarov, had surrendered. Mr. Umarov, a veteran commander hailed by his followers but branded a terrorist by Russia, replaced Abdul Khalim Saidullayev in June, when he was killed by Russian forces. Mr. Umarov’s surrender would be a severe blow to the separatists, but the pro-Kremlin Chechens quickly retracted their claim, saying they had accepted the surrender of Mr. Umarov’s younger brother. A rebel Web site mocked the confusion and said Mr. Umarov did not have a younger brother.

Oops.  I wonder what the "younger brother" surrendered about?  Or if there is a younger brother?

     One of the

One of the conservative defenses of the wiretapping program that I have heard is that the executive needs special powers during wartime, and there are historical precedents for such.

That's fine and dandy, although this line of reasoning is dubious at best. But let's please define how long this war will last. I can't imagine that it means until we withdraw from Iraq, if we ever do. They are calling it the war on terror. That means the possibility of a small cell of guys blowing something up is wartime.

That means we are in an eternal state of war. And I guess that means an eternal extension of unchecked executive power.

Or at least until it's President Hillary Clinton or John Edwards. Then I'm quite certain we will be treated to a heavy duty conservative re-evaluation of the situation.

Re: the Bush video...

I'm sorry....the man was drunk!!!!!

Good lord

Larrynow, I think you're right.  If that fool wasn't half-full of Wild Turkey (emphasis on the "turkey"), then he was coming off a week-long drunk.  Slurring words, losing his train of thought, belligerence, schizophrenic paranoia...boy's got all the symptoms.

It hurts me to say this to anyone, but:  "Hey!  Bush!  As of right now, we're cutting off your grog supply!"

totally, visibly, absolutely

    He was completely smashed.

Anyone get a source for that bioengineered rice escaping story?

Umarov's brother

Friday, the "BBC Russia" had an article that said Akhmed Umarov announced that he was the (starschi brat) older brother of Doku. The state referred to him as the younger brother in their statement about the confession. It doesn't seem that his kinship with Umarov was in question, the confusion just whether he was the older or younger brother.

WTF?!?!

I don't believe I just heard a commercial on AAR for "WealthyMen.com", a website allegedly dedicated to hooking up rich bastards with "sophisticated" women.  At first, I thought it was a gag, but apparently not.  They even have an "asset verification" service, so you geeks can forget it.

So is this one of the advertisers we're supposed to give our commerce because they support AAR?

:long:

Must be a local commercial...

...I 've heard how Oregon is a tax shelter for 60's hippies from the midwest, especially those who took to the high seas to hide their wealth....

Eh, cap'n????????????

Ya got me

I came here specifically to hide both my dollars.

   I haven't heard

   I haven't heard that....... Myself, I'm listed on WellHung.com.

Meltdown!

As much as I dislike "President" Bush, this meltdown made me sad.

For six years I've been wondering if the president's annual physical included a mental health exam. This started as a joke but the longer this "presidency" goes on the more I've thought it is a good idea.

Do we have (or have we had) any protections in place if the Chief Executive loses his mind?

I'm serious!

Anyone...?

M.

If the president becomes "incapacitated"...

...which admittedly ain't that far off by most rational yardsticks, then of course Dead-eye Dick would be "in control".  What would be required would be the judgement of at least one qualified physician, I believe.

But practically speaking, Bush hasn't been in charge since he took office--that has fallen to Cheney, Rummy, Condi, and Pudgepot Turdblossom.  If Bush were to really lose it, more than likely all that would happen would be a reduction in the number of public appearances, at least until a plausible excuse could be derived.  And given the public's willingness to accept crap as gospel, that shouldn't be too hard.

The hard part would be to keep Bush from staggering out onto the White House lawn, waving a bottle of Jack D and daring anyone to "bring it on".

???

???"Pudgepot Turdblossom" = Karl Rove???  :-)

M.

I dunno

Just seemed fitting.
