Obama/Biden Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer talks to Rachel before the debate
Listen: Obama/Biden Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer talks to Rachel before the debate
Rachel: I’m sure you were delighted to see the latest New York Times/ CBS Poll that puts your candidate up by 14 points. I do not want to rain on the parade, but, Truman made up that same deficit in 1948 at one point in the 19080 election even Reagan was that far behind. Does John McCain still have a legitimate shot at winning the election, or do you think that polling is better and more accurate and a 14 point lead today is now more predictive than it might have been 30 or 60 years ago?
Dan Pfeiffer: This thing is certainly not done. There’s no question about it. We’re very happy about where we are right now, but we were up by a near similar margin in New Hampshire back in January before that ended up in Senator Clinton’s column. So, Senator Obama is going to keep working I think we’ve gotten to this place in large part by outworking John McCain all across the country doing 2 to 3 events every day to his one, and we’re going to keep doing that.
R: Do you think that there is an inclination – a self-serving inclination – in the media to portray the race as if it is closer than it is as in order to sort of keep the drama high?
D: Oh absolutely, I suspect that some of these national poll numbers in The New York Times is one, is probably a good example, are probably a little inflated, certainly there’s no way that in a closely divided country like this one that Barrack Obama is going to win a national election by 14 points. It would be a landslide of historic proportion. So they’re naturally going to close and as soon as they close the cable T.V. pundits are going to get in a lather and start trying to write the story of another John McCain comeback. And so our goal is to not get distracted by that when the inevitable happens.
R: I’m looking forward to being in that lather myself because I enjoy the emotional highs and lows here. I will say that from the big picture perspective of what your campaign seems like from the outside, is that it seems like you guys are not reading the papers in a sense of coming up with your message of the day. In fact, it’s less of a message of the day than a message of the week, message of the month, message of the campaign that you’re trying to keep your eyes on the horizon and not react in obvious or dramatic ways to short-term developments. That’s what it looks like from the outside. Is that what the ethos is inside?
D: I think that’s essentially right. I think if you were to read the speech Barrack Obama gave on February 10, 2007 in Springfield when he announced his candidacy and the speech he gave in Ohio and Virginia in recent days you’d find that they’re very, very, similar. Obviously we account for some dramatic changes in our economy and how we discuss it but the basic idea that we need change in Washington, that American people want to be brought together to take on the special interests and lobbyists is still the same. So we look at each one of these things, our goal is to do everything we do to be within that core message because we believe that that’s where the American people are and I think that at least to the extent that you believe polls that’s sort of bearing itself out over the long-run.
R: Tonight of course is the final Presidential debate and John McCain essentially said on the radio in St. Louis yesterday, that he will finally say to Senator Obama’s face what McCain and Governor Palin and the McCain-Palin surrogates have been saying for weeks now – which is that Barrack Obama “pals around with terrorists” using this Bill Ayers attack. Why did you guys essentially goad John McCain into bringing it up tonight? Because I do think both Senator Biden and Senator Obama essentially dared him to bring it up now he says he will.
D: There are a couple of things here. I don’t know whether John McCain will bring it up. On a day-by-day or minute-by-minute basis I don’t know what the John McCain campaign is going to do, and I’m not sure the John McCain campaign knows that either. Is the John McCain that shows up tonight going to be the one that Joe Lieberman – John McCain’s closest friend – said should stop all of the character attacks and go positive? Is it the John McCain campaign that Sarah Palin suggests should go for the jugular tonight? Is it the John McCain campaign that John McCain’s own brother suggests needs to be completely changed? So we’ll see. I think one of the reasons we sort of dared John McCain on this – there are actually two reasons – One, is that if John McCain thinks this issue is so important – and perhaps even more important than the economy - he should bring it up in a national T.V. audience and make that point. And secondly, frankly I think if you look at some of these polls and you look at the reaction of voters as we travel across the country, people do not want to be distracted from the big issues. And that’s what this false, debunked, Bill Ayers attacked is. And frankly if John McCain wants to use some of the precious minutes he’ll have before a national T.V. audience talking about something no one cares about, more power to him.
R: I get the strategy and I appreciate positively the aggressiveness that it represents. I do think that you’re playing with fire a little bit here strategically, and that is, as evidenced by the New York Times/CBS poll that is out today. It can happen that a candidate gets in trouble for being seen as too negative and I think part of John McCain’s problem in the polls right now is that he is seen as kind of campaigning like a jerk and running a campaign in which there isn’t’ much to be proud of. So making him own his campaign does potentially have benefits for you guys, and they know that. And the reason they’re still going negative is because negative tends to work even if it does sort of make you look bad while you’re doing it. Isn’t there a chance that these allegations will seem new and newsworthy to people if they here them in the debate tonight?
D: There’s a chance for anything in politics obviously. This has been poured over by every news source in America in great detail over the last 14 days or so since the McCain campaign announced this new strategy so ham-handedly through the press. But if he’s going to bring it up we also welcome the opportunity to have Senator Obama rebut it and correct the record and deal with it in front of that same national T.V. audience.
R: Are we going to hear anything new tonight from Senator Obama in terms of policy?
D: If there is an ace up our sleeve I’m not going to necessarily reveal it now…
R: Damn! I didn’t fool him! [laughs]
D: [laughs] – maybe next time – but I think that what he’s been doing in these debates has been working and it’s because he has a real sense of the American people – their concerns, what they care about – and he’s been addressing those. John McCain has been talking about a different America, one where Bill Ayers or ACORN, or some of these other issues are more important than the economy. I think it’s the America that watches FOX news that he’s addressing, but, we’ll continue to do what’s been working and be ready for whatever John McCain shows up tonight.
R: Let me ask you another question essentially about whether or not you’re going to win. I spoke with Princeton professor Melissa [Harris-Lacewell?] a couple of times in the last week about the Bradley Effect – about the phenomenon of voters telling pollsters they will vote for an African American candidate but then not doing it. Do you as a campaign believe that the Bradley Effect is real?
D: We do not. We have seen no evidence of it in the primaries. And I was interested to see that Tom Bradley’s own pollster the other day told the press that he did not see the Bradley Effect in their own internal polling. If you look at every state that we have had an election in in the primary – in every single one of them, except for one – Barrack Obama out-polled his number in the aggregate of public polling going in. In Ohio we were right around 43 headed into March 4 and we ended up getting right about that amount. At no point there was an inflated number out there. New Hampshire is the one exception which I actually think had to do with a lot of factors, including a very late surge by Senator Clinton. Is race a factor in the race? Absolutely. Is it as big a factor as many in the mainstream media think it is? We have no evidence to suggest that.
R: It may be – and this is just my observation, my interpretation – that you guys don’t believe in the Bradley Effect but the McCain campaign does, hence, if you wanted to campaign on the idea that the Bradley Effect might help you win an election – that a white candidate could outperform the polls by virtue of the fact that that white candidate was campaigning against a black candidate – what you would do is you would play to not just the prejudice, but the suspicions that underlie those voting and polling patterns. And the way you do that is by saying if you elect the black candidate, the black candidate will shift resources and money and the public goods that we share as a country to his own community. We will shift them away from white people and toward black people. And therefore you would campaign on things like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac causing the financial crisis by giving the mortgages to black people. You would campaign on Jeremiah White. You would campaign on ACORN stealing the election – this black organization – stealing the election for a black candidate. I see a trend in the McCain campaign strategy to try to stoke exactly the fears and suspicions you’d want to stoke in order to play to this effect, do you agree?
D: I would be very cautious and always hesitant to ascribe that sort of motive to anyone’s actions. I think you’d have to really know for 100% certain before you head out and make that set of accusations. Now what I will say is two fold: Whether the McCain campaign believes in the Bradley Effect or not I don’t know. I imagine given the state of their campaign right now if someone said the Easter Bunny could deliver a victory they’d probably believe in the Easter Bunny too. And Second, I think that there is no question that they have a strategy to attempt to make Barrack Obama seem like the risky choice. They basically declared that - it seems to be their only path. I think it’s a strategy that has not worked. Throughout their various responses to the economic crisis it was Barrack Obama that showed that he was the steady choice he was the one who was not erratically zigzagging across America and across the economic landscape on a near-hourly basis. We know that that’s what their strategy is. What happens deep in their heart – that’s for others to ascribe. The strategy they’re using is one that’s typical for candidates who are new on the scene, like Senator Obama.
R: Last question Dan, and I really appreciate you taking the time to join us on what I am sure is a very busy day for you. Why are you guys advertising in video games to remind people about early voting? What was that staff meeting like? [laughs]
D: [laughs] Well, I don’t get invited to the videogame staff meetings. It’s something I probably ought to work on. This is sort of the hallmark of our campaign. We want to bring a lot of new people into the process. Senator Obama has an appeal - young people who have been cynical towards politics their whole life - have them get involved. This was an opportunity that someone had to communicate to people to in a place where they might not normally be communicating – and break through some of the clutter of the millions of dollars being spent on T.V., on the radio and in the mail. We took advantage of it and I think it certainly worked in terms of helping young people to understand the early voting process and get them to the polls early so they can help volunteer for us on Election Day.
R: And because I’m a politics dork the news of about you guys advertising in Burn Out made me want to go play Burn Out.
D: Then it works for everyone!
R: [laughs] Exactly! Dan Pfeiffer, thank you for taking the time, I really appreciate it. Dan Pfeiffer is Communications Director for the Obama*Biden ’08.

Tonight's Debate
Hi Rachel I just want to first say I'm so glad you are now on MSNBC you are fantastic and a true journalist you know I really don't get it about how some media refuse to tell the news about everyone.
Anyway I guess what's scratching me now is that every station I look at as I do watch them all Fox, Cnn only to watch what they are up too as I am truly loyal to watching Chris though he's a tough cookie to figure I think he's just a true journalist and will call it the way he see's it but you and Keith Oberman are my favorite's I never miss watching you what a relief. So as I was saying tonight is the debate and all I hear from the media and pundit's is how McCain will attack or should attack Obama as if McCain was never involved in the Keating 5, dumping his wife for his now wife Cindy who by the way use to live across the street from McCain and the one he dumped when she was only 15yr. old and wouldn't that make one shake was he having an afair with a 15yr. old and by the way I found this information off the Huffington Press and what about Palin. You know I can't figure Obama and this crock of letting these two off the hook he's playing it cool but he could lose this by ignoring and attacking back!
If he had only put out the things that you and Keith find out all the time I truly believe this Ayer's thing McCain would not be bring up at all but this Axelrod is making a big mistake not to address these issues about Ayer's along with noting to the American People that these two are not without huge SIN.
Oh well I feel helpless as Obama is still trying think that he can play nice with a dirty old man and big mouth Sarah SeaBass

By blondiespenardOctober 15, 2008 - 9:22pmThe religious agenda?
Why isn't anyone addressing this issue? Rachel, I thought you were brave enough to tackle it, but so far I am disappointed (and I have been watching and listening faithfully to see if you will). The issue that I speak of is - RELIGION. Did we forget that we are suppossed to have a separation of church and state? It's like we're not allowed to even challenge these people who insist on imposing their religious views on our lives. Sara Palin just did an interview with the Christian Broadcast Network. (What??) Should someone who's running to be "a heartbet away' from the presidency be doing stuff like that? Is she going to be doing an interview with the Jewish Broadcast Network? The Muslim Broadcast Network? The Atheist Broadcast Network?...and yet, nobody is calling her out on this. They must realize that they can't have it both ways. You can't keep catering to the "base" (a.k.a. intolerant zealots) and then claim that they want an America that's fair to everyone. Oh, by the way, maybe someone should let McCain know that she wants to ammend our constitution to ban gay marriage..even though he keeps insisting that the federal government has no business doing that. Oops, I guess they forgot to discuss that little ditty during the gruelling vetting process? Please keep your religious views away from my constitution.

There is so much I want to comment on I don't know where to begin...
Is it true that PBS has taken a poll inquiring whether Ms. Palin is qualified to be V.P and that all the 'Yes" answers are from Republicans? And, how come one must buy Mr. Kennedy's book on the Voting Polls and their inefficiencies/inequalities so close to the election date? Wow! Why didn't the Democratic Party communicate this to Democrats, say, on the campaign trail?

So an avowed Right-Wing so-called "news channel" being in the tank for the Treasonous Bush Nazi Right for the past eight years, and for the corrupt, bigoted and anti-American NeoKon Khrister Right for the past decade, is just peachykeen in your "undecided" mind, right? BUT - when a handful of people like Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann balance the books of MSM and Right-Wing Media right-leaning coverage by providing an openly critical view of George W. Bush's traitorous, unconstitutional and criminal regime, and McRove's vicious and clearly corrupt campaign to succeed to this treason, that's "sponsored by The Black Guy", hmm?
I think you've already made up your mind, and the way your phrase yourself proves it to me. You're what we call a "concern troll" - so the only question is, are you being paid by Rove's proteges to come here...or are you so deluded (or full of Fear of a Black President) that you gave your soul away to the Right for free...?

But let's keep an honest perspective here. Listen to the rallies for McCain, and then those for Obama, and see where the "kill him!" and "he's a terrorist!" come from. Now that's REAL hate.

Much of this has laid low during much of the time and seems to blossom when something of note happens that threatens the status quo. I too am undecided about who to vote for, but I will tell you one thing, listening to Rachel Maddow is making me sick. Anyone with a sarcastic, negative, trying to be funny attitude about any candidate just turns me off. She obviously doesn't know anything about Obama, because she never talks about him. Its usually sarcastic quirks about Palin and Mccain. Give me something to go on. If I want info that you are giving out I will go out on all the blogs and read the same sarcastic things. You really arent funny. I will go elsewhere to get information on all candidates, and not just the few Democrats you are endorsing. Who are you going to pick on after the elections are over? If your lucky Mccain and Palin will win and you will have four years of good old fashioned negative journalism.

we all are entitled to our own opinions and are able to state them freely. If you don't appreciate Rachel or her show, you have total control to change your TV to whatever program you would prefer.
If you truly are undecided for whom to vote at this point, I don't think that any TELEVISION show is going to give you the kind of information you need to make that important decision. Actually, Rachel's show is what we call "the answer to the raging lunatics of the far right" - only this approach is smart and FAIR. If you were paying any attention, you'll notice that Rachel's show addresses the issues from the point of view of TRUTH, fairness, wit, liberalism, and sarcasm. If you want news that is completely free of any point of view, then go and witness everything for yourself. Then go to people like Bill Moyers and the like to get an estimation. Don't assume that Rachel's job is to make your mind up for you. Besides, in the same society which has allowed crazies such as Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Riely to exist for as long as they have, I think we are well overdue for some smart comebacks of our own. Nontheless, I sincerely hope you've been ripping the people at Fox Noise several new ones on this issue of fairness - since you seem to be so preoccupied with it.

By chemgirlOctober 22, 2008 - 10:13amWell there are no new
Well there are no new entries on your blog regarding the current (and ongoing) debate, so digress I will on this somewhat irrelevant (no harm intended) entry.
I don't own a home, nor investment account, I don't have health insurance. I know that the current economic situation is dire, but I don't spend much, and I'm employed. I care about our National liberties and believe in our forefather's determination that the people will rule and there will be no consolidation of power in the government...I read Naomi Wolf.
I'm looking for a leader (as if I need one) who will make me have confidence in a representative democracy. However, I'm not looking for a leader who maintains the status quo and keeps the money in place. That's not what I want in a leader.
I want someone with integrity coupled with intelligence, where no personal agenda is permitted. I want someone who hasn't been sullied and corrupted by politics as usual. I want a conscientious individual who will incorporate the good laws and toss all the bad ones. I want a President who doesn't believe in the way things were/are, but the way things can be. I want someone who knows that free trade does not mean fair trade.
I want a President with a global vision, and know that what's good for U.S.A. is good for the world. We have lost our status as leaders. We are smarter than that. Or at least, we hope we are.

McCain was AWFUL! What a whiny baby ... "if you would have done the town hall meetings like I wanted to ..." How many times can he bring that up? Like that JUSTIFIES inciting HATE in the American people??? I can't believe it! He's already reverted to acting like a child (isn't that exactly what old people do towards the end?). I felt that Obama should have really GOT McCain on a lot of issues (does McCain not realize that he lives in not just ONE but THIRTEEN GLASS HOUSES!?!?), but I have to respect his choice to take the high ground. Obama definitely won.
On a way less mature level (and the side that makes this all bearable) ...
The end was HILARIOUS! McCain walking around the stage like he was lost and then even approached Michelle Obama as if SHE were his wife ... that had us ROTFL. He was dying to get out of the seat when it was ending then shook Obama's hand a little TOO MUCH and proceeded to wander around aimlessly for awhile (didn't he do this last time too??). Reminded me of when Bush tried to get off the stage after some press conference when he walked into the door and then didn't know what to do! Bush & McCain really are TOO MUCH ALIKE!!

By Buxtehude_BarbarossaOctober 19, 2008 - 10:43pmMcCain & torture
Rachel's comment earlier this evening (on MSNBC) about McCain & torture was exactly spot on (thank you for making that clear, RM): Yes, McCain did introduce the so-called McCain Amendment to the 2005 Detainee Treatment Act, but tragically, he and his fellow Republicans gutted the force of that amendment not only by exempting the CIA from restrictions on torture, as Rachel mentioned, but also by seeking to deny habeas review to then-pending cases. In effect, what they gave with one hand they took with the other. So much for America and the rule of law.

By monktraneOctober 15, 2008 - 10:27pmThe LAST Debate (one more thing)
It is reprehensible how McCain can look anyone in the eye and say that he's repudiated the "angry mob" when he and his sidekick have been INCITING hatred. He and what's her name have done NOTHING BUT try to get the fringe to put these messages out there that are so fear-based and racially dangerous to try to turn their numbers around. They have been much more than "negative", their behavior and CHOICE OF WORDS (McCain's always saying Obama chooses his words so carefully & is eloquent) have been downright borderline criminal in my opinion.
One thing about our oil ... if we start drilling NOW, we will not see ANY of the oil we have for around 15 YEARS! So it's not a viable option and definitely not one that has anything to do the current situation. We need OPTIONS, like Obama has proposed.
Oh ... and McCain had to bring up that buying out the mortgages thing AGAIN after EVERYONE in the financial community have all agreed that this idea is THE WORST idea out there; that it wouldn't help AT ALL!!! That it would in fact make the crooks who messed up the housing market in the first place get richer and would basically rip off the homeowners! Does he not listen to the EXPERTS? Oh wait ... who does that remind you of? Bush??? Hmmmm..... Kinda makes that Bush = McCain thing even MORE realistic (he really IS another Prez Bush, regardless of his one written-by-someone-else's line that the media keeps harping on now).

rachel i watch you religiously everynite, i have every friend i know watching you,the whole time my phone keeps ringing with points you make, that all of average americans are wondering also.you were the only one that rated it right on tv, not beating around the bush(no pun intended).THIS WAS ONE OF MCCAIN'S WORSE! he was so uncomfortable and his facial expressions..lol... and answers? they didnt make sense. after tonite i truly understand his bond with sarah palin.we laughed the whole time, and why hasnt anyone discussed mccain calling bidens policy request cock-a-may-me.....oh my God i havent heard that in years...lolol. my mother use to say that when someone made an idiotic statement.lololololol.. his demeaning characteristics are what help him lose. at the town hall debate, his wife and him were gone, while obama and michelle, talked took pictures and mingled...the town hall meating he always wants. we little people down here think it is sad and apathetic that people even want to vote for that ticket. They are both mccain/palin very sad. i felt sorry for john mccain tonite. no need to watch saturday nite live this weekend, you probably wont be able to hold yourself together with laughter.

By unbelievable69October 15, 2008 - 10:54pmGreat Job on the Post Debate
Rachel - I admire your passion for politics. I think you hold your ground and you speak the truth. The only thing I don't understand is how you can stomach being on the show with Pat "the bigot" Buchanan.
I love MSNBC (Hardball, Keith Oblermann, and your show) but I HATE whenever Pat Buchanan is on any of the shows....especially Morning Joe. He makes very inappropriate and racist comments. He talks like he should be apart of FOX NEWS.
Hang in there....you are doing a GREAT job!!!

By caramel73October 15, 2008 - 11:27pmpaying for Obama's programs
As an enthusiastic supporter of Barack, I am totally in favor of his programs. However I don't understand the problem in paying for them. Why doesn't he propose an excise tax on IMPORTED goods similar the VAT (value added tax) in Europe. For example, a 1% tax from import to wholesale, a 1% tax from wholesale to retail, and a 1% tax from retail to consumer. The tax could be proportional to the amount of trade deficit we have with certain countries (China). And these countries certainly would not stop trading with us since we are, unfortunately, their best customers. It would save the taxpayers (maybe even eliminate income tax on the middle class) in addition to bringing more jobs back to this country.

By topdoc13October 15, 2008 - 11:58pmThe irrelevance of punditry ... HA!!! BTW: BHO aint no Greeny
The ways and means to navigate the process to become POTUS requires sucking up to the DLC.
If he proposed a populous agenda he'd not only be broke, but for the millions of individual online contributors, he would have to eject the standing forces inside the beltway and that doesn't make for effective bipartisanship/single party rule.
Since we're sill in the making sausage stage of the game, perhaps there's a chance that the peoples voice will be given weight IF the SENATE gets 60+ Dems. But it aint gonna happen.
If you want progressive legislation, either move to EU, or work with the Green's to get on the ballot and into debates to force the Republicrat party into accepting things like 75% of MD's want SINGLE PAYER NOW!!!
BHO hasn't even come out against PMC's like Blackwater having open ended NO BID contracts for indefinite deployments with DoS world wide. You cant expect him to be rational on domestic TAX policy while he's totally ass backward on foreign policy that is controlled by the IRON TRIANGLE. After all if he is permitted to win, he'll only be the POTUS.

By THX.1138 UltraV...October 16, 2008 - 6:00pmYes, That Disappoints Me Too, Singy
OTOH, as I've told all the Nader fanboyz on BuzzFlash - you can have a politically "pure" progressive candidate with no chance in Hell of winning...or you can have a less progressively pure candidate who might at least start to steer the system away from the abomination that is Thirty Years of Right-Wing Dominance. I don't especially like Obama's Health Care system either, but it promises one important thing - to sufficiently cripple Big Insurance dominance of U.S. Health Care so that Single Payer Healthcare in the U.S. may at some future point be possible. And while it'd be GREAT for US soldiers if we could completely pull our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan on January 22, 2009, we'd be leaving behind a huge mess of our own creation that would, no two ways about it, come back to bite us on the ass repeatedly for at least another generation - so a cautious and considered series of drawdowns and redeployments as Obama has recommended is quite probably the ONLY chance we have of tamping down the inferno George W. Bush et al gleefully lit (ostensibly) in our name.
Tempting as a storm-the-Bastille, streets-red-with-blood revolution is (and as I've mentioned before, it's VERY tempting to me too), that's not what will start the process of turning this country back into the liberal pluralistic society we now remember with nostalgic fondness. All that will do is destabilize our country so horribly that some strongman or -woman who makes The Traitor Bush look like George Washington will end up taking over, just like Napoleon did in France, Lenin and later Stalin did in Russia, and Hitler did in Germany....

So a general strike after the Dems took IMPEACHMENT OFF the TABLE would have NOT gotten an EXXON windfall profit tax, SCHIP, Iraq TIMELINE, USA PATRIOT Act repeal, FISA accountability and habeas corpus re-established, but would have worked in favor of PROTO-FASCIST ideology?
BULLSHIT!!!!!! You have drunk the Kool-Aid!!!!!!!!

By THX.1138 UltraV...October 19, 2008 - 12:06pmRachel YumOww ...but what's with the false eye lashes ?
Ok, i know..i should comment on this radio segment.
Listening to Rachel is awesome as ususal.
Lately started to watch clips from MSNBC on their site. Along with Keith O.
Seeing Rachel in action is priceless...
I know am not the first to say it but it needs to be said again till they are gone...
what is with the false eye lashes, they become the focus of my attention when i watch the MADDOW show...
and the tacky bowling alley blue eye shadow glaring put on by an amateur???? Makes me wonder...
These things totally discredit Rachel as a professional. At least look at footage of her more 'natural' and compare...the earlier footage is so much more appealing and professional.
Watching her with two catepilars on her eye balls is freaky & disturbing....and the blue eye shadow hey hey ho ho the frosty blue stuff gots to go... my protest song
At least wear a matte brown or smoky biege matte, to blend in ....the colourful eyeshadow is nothing but
clown makeup ...
i know its not her fault ...she is trusting the bad makeup person....
well.....
I suggest you trust yourself more.
boycott blue green eyeshadows...and fakie eyelashes for the sake of humanity and DIGNITY.
just a thought.

Even though it is sometimes all too tempting to comment on the way someone looks, especially when they are new to television, I've got to say that I think Rachel looks just fine. Is there room to grow and develop a more finely tuned image? Most certainly, but in the meantime I think Rachel has a businesslike yet soft image that works very well with her demeanor.
Many of your comments ("Watching her with two catepilars on her eye balls is freaky & disturbing...and the blue eye shadow hey hey ho ho the frosty blue stuff gots to go...the colourful eyeshadow is nothing but clown makeup... these things totally discredit Rachel as a professional") are mean spirited and just plain wrong. Heck, send her some new eyeshadow if you are so moved.
I agree that she deserves a heads up from her fans about a bad makeup job or whatever, but what you're doing is stand up shtick at her expense. When she's on da tube, I don't usually just focus on her makeup and do believe that she appears as she is; a professional, polished and well groomed woman.

I never said such a thing, nor do I believe that although many in the biz seem to be adopting that look (for the time being).
I was commenting on her overall look and trust that both she and her makeup people will get it right soon enough. In the meantime, I think she appears to be a handsome and polished woman with head slapping smarts.

The smart, sophisticated and married Rachel Maddow looks perfectly fine, people. Blue shadow or not, whether she was physically appealing to the viewers is really the last thing we should be concerned with. When was the last time people even commented on the color of Keith O's suit? just a thought:)

By BreakingPointOctober 20, 2008 - 8:41pmObermanns make over mannnnn
Well, now that you bring it up. :)
Was just thinking how smart Obermann looks, except for his shirt and jacket combo,
they throw me off a bit.
To me, and that is just me, he could use a bit more 2008 - 2009 styling. Now its a bit too east coast business man look...and he could use a bit more rouge and lipstick to bring out his cuteness.
Rachels look is discussed partly because she is queer or maybe wholy (spell check¿¿¿ )
due to it.
Queer women, excuse me i mean ICONS are expected in part to maintain the rebel within them even when they make it in the ´big bad world´.
I know that when I go to work I do change my attire to fit in, but I have decidely not gone all
Mary Poppins to please the Palin Hockey Mom crowds. Although in Europe, where I am, there are no creepy hockey moms at work. And the straight girls often dress more gay than I. It´s so freaking confusing here. But I digress.
Rachels honest character is what is so appealing, her rebel side, activism, and fearlessness with all those wrinkled up white guys swilling the scotch and ice cubes .... Rachel Maddows look is important for sure.
Sorry if I offended R.M., but generally anything I say here I would also say in person. And I would. But perhaps more discreetly. This being the internet and an open forum...it is what it is. Just a board.
Maddows look matters to queers because it is one thing to be professional it is quite another
to be professional and authentic.
So...here´s to hoping we see more butchy woman and queer men on the boob tube.
I love watching segments with both Kieth and Rachel, they are an amazing duo.
congradulations to them both.
HOT HOT HOT ...and yes smart is hot too.
with regards to Airamerica,...um live...don´t think so.

By wildwolfgurlOctober 22, 2008 - 10:20amDavid Yepsen & the Des Moines Register
Look at this piece of yummy tummy pie. It seems that the debate polls have all gone toward Obama in huge margins (Yipppeee!). However, having taken such a stand, we still have about 3 weeks left until election day, thus let's get ourselves together and take a look at what is going on around this country.:
* David Yepsen at the Des Moines Register:
John McCain lost the final debate of the 2008 presidential campaign Wednesday night. As a result, he may well have lost the election, too....
McCain simply needed a breakout performance and he failed to provide one. He went into the forum trailing Obama in polls of the contest and he came out of in the same position. By doing so, McCain missed his biggest remaining opportunity to change the direction of the presidential contest....
Conservatives will love McCain’s dwelling on his pro-life, anti-abortion stance. Obama, who is pro-choice, tried to reach out to the anti-abortion community by calling for more adoption.
That exchange was telling: McCain seemed more focused on firing up his base of conservative supporters, while Obama was trying to reach beyond his.
At this point in a general-election campaign, a candidate should have his or her “base” locked up and be going after undecided voters.

By Polly TicsOctober 16, 2008 - 3:52amBe prepared.
I don't want to be a killjoy, but while a 14 point lead is VERY encouraging we can be sure that the point spread will narrow as election day approaches
