Today's TRMS
Obama's best chance for winning in November might just be John McCain. Or rather, John McCain's campaign, the most poorly managed, embarrassingly outmaneuvered campaigns since Katherine Harris ran for Senate. So on today's show Rachel will be running through the litany of missteps and miscalculations, from the canceled visit to an oil platform during a hurricane to his backward timeline on the surge and the Sunni awakening.
Our first guest is Ilan Goldenberg from the National Security Network. Later John Amato from Crooks and Liars joins Rachel to talk about CBS
news editing out John McCain's mistake on Iraq -- and also about the Blue America pac's campaign against the rightwing "Freedom's Watch"
pac. Learn more about Blue America here.

Normal Lives?
I came across this Senator McCain quote at the First Read webpage yesterday:
McCain said. "We will withdraw. The fact is, is whether we withdraw in victory or whether we withdraw in defeat. And again, you and I have different versions. We have succeeded. The Sadr City is safe. Mosul is safe. Basra is safe. The people of Iraq, and I've been there, are now leading normal lives."
Is this true? Are these cities safe? Are people living normal lives there, lives without fear and with essentials? Is this a true assessment or one which Senator McCain wants us to believe?
Thanks for pointing out all the other misstatements - since his MSM friends seem to feel that these statements don't really matter.

By JTGullsJuly 23, 2008 - 7:42pmJTGulls, wonderful question, and what does "safe" mean?
When General Petraeus testified in front of Congress a few months ago about the securing of Baghdad, the New York Times ran a front-page article about the fact that it was due to balkanization. Is this happening in other parts of Iraq?
I'm a Cynic, and am wondering if Iraqis continue to be forced from their homes and neighbors to sustain some manner of Bush-driven notion of Utopia (read:ghettoizing Iraq). Also wondering where to find more information.
Thanks,

I am DYING to get one. But what can I say... I am trying hard to fight consumerism, and as long as I have the XO I won't be getting an Asus. (anyone interested in a XO?)
I got the OLPC during their get-one-give-one promotion, where you paid for 2 OXs, got one, and the other went to a kid. The price at the time was about $400, so I figured that even for a solo PC it was a good deal. So why not? Besides, it is kind of intriguing to try to type the right key when a tad too much alcohol runs through my veins... LOL. I think of it as a skills game... how many typos can I avoid?
About Rachel's suit... I think those are hers. I believe I once heard her saying that she only had a gray one for a while. She mentioned it on a show, and that was when we began paying attention at home. Sad but true... I never care about what stars wear in the red carpet since I avoid all of that in the first place... but when it comes to a butch lesbian on TV I notice... sad, sad, sad.... (but you can't blame me, she is CUUUUTE)
Although I would LOVE for her to come on TV wearing the F&*C Prop 8 shirt rather than a suit. LOL

By cool_princessieJuly 24, 2008 - 2:40pmToday's "The Surge" discussion--mere details vs. The Long View
Unfortunately, the details sometimes seem to get in the way of getting an understanding of what those in control (the Kissingers and Brezinkskis and those they serve) are doing in the long view they call the REALPOLITIK of GLOBALISATION.
As long as we stay down in the road following behind, sorting through the pebbles they kick up as the wheels of their limos move them forward on the road to their ends, will we EVER see where these guys are leading us with all the events and military incursions they are fomenting continuously???

I had several right wing co-workers tell me today that this was no gaffe. This was the son of Cain THREATENING Iran with total destruction.
Also, the whole media thing worked like this.
All the media focuses on Obama, working together to uncover a gaffe.
Nobody focuses on McCain's gaffes (except Air America/nova M/Olbermann)
The idea by the media owners is that these people will find something to drag Obama down, while leaving McCain alone.
Once you realize the media is conservative, everything fits into place, including the CBS switcheroo, which was meant to cover for 'Sprinkes' McCain .
Race for the White House has a pro McCain slant too, if you listen to it. Only Rachel represents the pro-Obama side. That is not fair.

By William SchubertJuly 24, 2008 - 12:48amPoints to both sides
My view on the surge debate is that both McCain and Obama are right. And both a little wrong.
McCain's claim is that he said the surge would be good, Obama didn't, the surge has accomplished good stuff, so he was right. I think that's a reasonable point, so I will say that he was right about the surge. There's a lot of stuff the surge was supposed to do that it didn't, but the Generals at the time were saying that they needed more troops (Bush is lying when he says he listens to the Generals on the ground, he never did before the surge), so sending more troops was a reasonable position and good things have happened because of it.
The problem with McCain's point is that he's going too far with it. He's saying that *everything* that's good has happened because of the surge. That puts Obama in the position where if he did concede the point, he'd look like he was also conceding on everything else. So every time someone asks about the surge he has to mention all the other things that reduced violence. He has to emphasize those things to the point that, yes, sometimes he doesn't emphasize the role of the surge as much as he could.
McCain says the surge helped. Obama says the other developments helped. The truth is that both things helped and they're both right. But nobody is going to get a political ad out of "we're both right to some degree," so they've gone to the extreme sides of the arguement, with McCain being more extreme.
All of this is complicated by the other thing that Rachel routinely mentions, that McCain is trying to act like the Surge is the only decision on the war that either candidate ever made, so he should not only win this point but win the entire debate about the war. Since that's the only thing he has to hold onto at this point, he's gone totally nutbar about trying to convince everyone that he's winning this round.

By Jason M. BryantJuly 24, 2008 - 2:08am"Surge"?
What was the "surge" exactly? It is a phenomenon aimed at American airspace, designed to stop talk about exiting Iraq here while escalating the war. Didn't Rachel say that the "surge" troops have all gone home but the net number of troops in Iraq is now greater than during the "surge"? Did I remember that correctly?
The "surge" is now a debate tool in the U.S., and all talk about it is disingenuous. Like "caucus-like democracy," it is one of many Bushisms that works here but cannot be translated into another language because it has no meaning.
- Email this page
By Buxtehude_BarbarossaJuly 24, 2008 - 1:23pmAll that is true, but it
All that is true, but it doesn't conflict with my points.
The surge was a political tactic by Bush, but it was also sending in more troops at a time when the Generals were saying they needed more troops. Heck, Jon Stewart's biggest criticism of the surge was that they weren't sending in enough troops.
The surge was definitely a debate tool. When the Democrats and America in general wanted to talk about withdrawal, Republicans said again and again, "Hold on, give the surge a chance, we shouldn't discuss anything at all until we've given the surge time to succeed." That was a huge cheat in the debate. However, the surge was also part of what reduced violence in Iraq.
You're right that the word "surge" is a debate tool. Like I said, part of what McCain says is true, but he's exaggerating it to the point that Obama can't admit that truth without it sounding like a concession on the whole issue.
My point is that it's not as simple as "Surge: Evil or Awesome?" McCain has a point and Obama has a point, but the truth is a mixture of the two. I think McCain is at fault for stratifying the conversation into the extreme right-or-wrong mess that it is now.

THE VAIN IN MCCAIN'S NOT MY ONLY DISTAIN?
Being a super power includes domestic policy which attends to the needs of those right here in the US of A. Difficult to imagine a president who divorced his wife because she was disfigured in a car accident developing meaningful health care policy. If he can't take care of his own wife, how is he going to take care of yours?
And on foreign policy...
Senator McCain said he would keep our men and women in Iraq for 100 years if he needed to with no intended goal. So far what we've accomplished is a great deal of death and the balkanization of a country based upon false precepts for forcefully entering it. What's so super about killing your own people (and tens of thousands of people in another country) for no reason?
Senator Obama, on the other hand, visited Afghanistan, where we really need troops, because that's where the Taliban continues to wage terror. Right now, we're swinging blindfolded at a terrorist pinata with a very big stick.
Sorry your whiteness is so threatened by someone who's not running for office. I'm more concerned about the precepts of the platform of someone who is.

I loved the allusion from people commenting on the news that Rachel would be a good fit for the show. OK, they also included Chuck Todd, but let's pretend I didn't read that.
My guess is that MTP will go to someone who has been on TV longer, and is not associated with any particular political ideology. Also, I think that Rachel would need to have the freedom to create her own thing in order to make it work. Getting MTP would imply repeating someone else's format. Just look at how her intellect shines on her radio show, and not as much when she sits in for Keith. She needs to create her own thing, and we know how good she is at it.
Yet, I have been thinking long and hard about my own petty needs, and realized that a radio show is more portable than a TV show. I can listen at work via the internet (which I have lately), I can download onto my MP3 player and listen when I drive, ride my bike, etc. But a TV show requires me to sit in front of a TV screen. I cannot watch it while driving, etc. Also, if I missed something it is easier to get the real juice via radio. YouTube resolution does NOT compare to the real thing, whereas a radio download IS the real thing.
Sigh... I already mourn the loss of my own personal comfort and habits.... poor little me...

By Jason M. BryantJuly 24, 2008 - 2:01pmThe media is letting Mr. McCain off the hook
Rachel, do you know why the news media is letting Mr. McCain get away on foreign affairs and military experience and executive decision experience? Because, the press lacks the military experience to know any better. The lack of military, Mr. McCain has the press fooled on the surge, he has made executive decision while in the military and I can go on and on. Their is a different between command and executive decisions. Mr. McCain made command decisions as a field commander who leads troops. I am willing to bet you a lot of three and four stars generals are pissed that he has put himself at their level resposibility. I look at general Clark hiss and grit his teeth at the notion that Mr. McCain, as a Captian in the U.S. Navy was making decision that only three and four stars generals makes. It is rare for two stars generals to negotiate foreign policy for the President of the United States. Here are some exmaples the Current CIA Director three stars general even at NASA. Colin Powell, NSC Adviser back in the eighies a three star general, as Chairman of the Jiont Chiefs a four star general. The six Party Talks with North Korea general was a full general. I spent a few days in the army, I as an elisted man know that. Mr. McCain was an 06 a Captian in the navy equal to a full colonel in the army, air force and marines. The rank 06 and below carry out policies and not set policies. You really can say 08 and below.
The surge, if you spent a couple of days in the army or marines as groung pounders. The only way you would know that the surge has worked you, have to leave or draw down to pre-sure troop levels or below. If the place remain clum, the surge has worked. If you spent a day or two in the army. This is the reason the president don't want to leave, he don't want to take that chance of the place going up in smoke.
The last thing about Mr. McCain you guys wont touch because you lack the military. I did not go to Vietnam althought I was in the army. The military teaches you to eliminate the enemy three ways, you kill, you seriously wound the enemy so he can't return to the battlefield or you capture and hold till the war is over. But, the press made him an hero and the press is stuck with its hero claim.
Rachel reserach it and ask some retired three and four star generals what a 06 does in the military. Ask what rank you have to be in shaping america's polices or make executive decisions.

By NJSharonJuly 24, 2008 - 9:41pmAs always, NJS, you're right
And we probably should knock it off, because I just betcha Chemgirl's going to reprimand us for baiting the troll. Even if Mikey is in the Honors Program at the Jesse Helms School of Poise and Charm, that's no reason to....
Dang it -- where IS the better angel of my nature at the moment, anyway?

I was afraid you'd invoke Rachel Maddow's Mommy again. I feel like we got off light this time.

By chemgirlJuly 25, 2008 - 10:13amWaaah! I want my podcast!
Is the podcast for 7/23 really, truely not available yet? Or have I just fallen in some sort of electronic black hole? If anyone knows how to get ahold to yesterday's podcast, I would really appreciate a pointer.
Thanks so much!

...that's with ads, right? Where an hour lasts an hour and not 38 minutes?
Are they trying to wean us onto something new and dangerous?
Lionel's show is coming through fine--is that because his show is less popular at the moment and they're trying to promote it, or because he does long comedic riffs mentioning the responsible engineers by name?
We know they haven't accidentally deleted the database of identities and passwords, because my iTunes installation requires a password to download Lionel (although his show is supposedly free).

Without ads. Except one or two short snippets, under 15 seconds per hour.

Getting rid of the caps. Next, we go to work on the logic. Likely harder, that.
