Today's TRMS
There may not be a VP announcement by Obama today but there is still A LOT of news-- in the campaigns, in Pakistan and in music. Yes, I said music.
On today's show Rachel will be talking to New York Times reporter Eric Lichtblau about the fun new ways the FBI is spying on us. And we will be reporting on the terrible attack by the Taliban in Pakistan. More than 60 dead at a munitions factory after a twin suicide bombing there earlier today. And then finally Rachel welcomes musician Rodney Crowell who will perform a song off his latest album.

Obama campaigned for Lieberman!?!
On yesterday’s show Rachel mentioned that Senator Barak Obama campaigned for Senator Joe Lieberman in 2006. Please don’t tell me that Obama was campaigning for the Conneticut for Lieberman Party candidate over the “out-of-Iraq-now” Democratic Party candidate. OK, you can tell me that but only if it’s true.

Am listening to pundits reach to craft unconvincing interpretations of unconvincing poll results--could the new show have a recurring polling feature? Discussing the relative accuracy of specific pollsters, their histories, who they are. Discussing the methods used in polls, incidentally explaining how polls work and current polling issues technologically and politically. Funny stories from polling; we've certainly got a lot of those now. Mine some Karl Rove gems.

OnStar won a case against the FBI when it was learned that the Gov't was eavesdropping on the occupants of automobiles with their OnStar System. OnStar was the victor in the case because while the voice open channel was actively open it disabled the other safty elements of the system (i.e. the deployed airbag alarm, rollover detection- in the event the auto was in an accident, and etc.) thereby creating an unsafe condition for their subscribers.

I believe that this is an issue, that if we give the Democratic party a majority in the Congress and the Presidency, we should force on them to legislate advanced protections of our privacy in terms of our electronic mail (which seems logical since normal mail in theory is protected), internet usage and purchases.
The first place that they could start (to make us all safer) is to clean up the Watch List. I hear that there is now over a million people on that no-fly list, many put on that list just because they wanted to fly with a "Peace" t-shirt on or they bought some "politically incorrect" book on Amazon (or who knows maybe all those who donated to Obama's campaign with their credit cards will now be put on the list). At a minimum it should be disclosed to those on the list, why specifically they were put on the list and there needs to be a procedure to contest this infringement of their freedom and liberty. The politicians really should worry about his too, because their privacy, their records (which can be altered) could be used to blackmail them into doing things against their will.

Yes, Rachel, one of the things I value most about you is that you don't speak down to people. I am hoping against hope that the Presidential debate moderated by Tom Brokaw with questions from "regular folks" turns out better than the ones we had during the primaries. Those questons seemed to be selected by moderators who wouldn't have the guts to ask anything so stupid or insulting themselves. Thereby giving the moderator the cover of "hey, I can't help it, these are the things that Americans want to know". I am fed up with having a mainstream media that feeds us junk news and then insults us for being uninformed. I am looking forward to your new show and seeing you change this self-fulfilling and parasitic paradigm.

By pinellasAugust 21, 2008 - 8:23pmMcCain and Vietnam
OK..I know no one is going to want to touch this with a ten foot pole..and I understand why.
It bugs me, however, the way people fall over themselves to praise McCain’s Vietnam War record. Of course, no one should be subjected to torture and the international law concerning war prisoners must be followed. This was not followed with McCain and other American war prisoners of North Vietnam.
However, there are many questions about McCain’s war record (see http://www.alternet.org/election08/95825/i_spent_years_as_a_pow_with_joh...) which remain to be answered.
Beyond this, there are many Americans who believe Vietnam was an unnecessary and criminal war. The past forty years have only increased this perception. What was gained for anyone, other than the war profiteers, by all of the death and destruction? McCain was part of a bombing campaign which cost the lives of hundreds of thousands, and probably millions, of Vietnamese. Is this really heroic? Isn’t it this collective amnesia about the Vietnam War which is the reason this country has itself in another senseless quagmire?
Many people praise McCain’s courage while in captivity. Who says that in thirty years one of the prisoners in Gitmo (most of whom had nothing to do with 9/11) will not be held up as a courageous patriot who should lead his country. Look at history!
- Email this page
By tom.2414August 21, 2008 - 8:38pmPart of the problem is that
Part of the problem is that arguing against the Vietnam war needs to be kept separate from arguing against the soldiers in that war. Whether we feel that the USA should have been fighting there or not, it isn't fair to hold the soldiers accountable for that. Many of them felt they were fighting for America. Risking your own life for something you believe in is a noble thing, even if others should not have been asking you to risk your life for that cause.
This is especially tricky because of the current soldiers serving in Iraq. Some people have tried to say that anyone who doesn't support the war doesn't support the troops. The way everyone has gotten around that has been by making it clear that they praise the troops, it's the leaders who have wasted the lives of those troops that they disapprove of.

By moisesAugust 21, 2008 - 9:20pmMcCain Displaying Early Dementia
In the Albuquerque Journal, one of our local physicians sent a letter to the editor suggesting that the topic of John McCain's mental state is effectively being hidden and protected by the media. Dr. Robert Goldstein writes that McCain is possibly "suffering from mild cognitive impairment, a precursor of dementia that is not uncommon in people of his age."
The evidence Goldstein cites is his frequent confusion regarding a variety of facts (e.g. the number of houses he owns), slow or halting speech and blanking or being speechless in response to simple questions.
Why are these mental lapses not reported in the media? For what reason are the media avoiding following up and discussing this subject? Can the media discuss these issues without bashing McCain for the suffering he is going through?
The President of the United States needs to be sharp and in touch with what's going on around him. First, he need to be in touch with himself. Do we need another Reagan as President of the United States? Do we need another President who can be manipulated because of his inability to connect simple thoughts and ideas?

The worshipping press that follows McCain around keeps giving him a pass, like on his gaffe on the draft. They excuse it as a misstatement, misinterpretation, when it is quite obvious that he can't remember a question long enough to answer it.
The most effective campaign commercials will be the ones showing McCain fumbling for answers on things that should be on the tip of his tongue, misstating facts that he should have at his fingertips, and just looking and acting too old to function.
71 isn't too old to be president, but McCain's 71 is. He's obviously not all there.

By joefishAugust 21, 2008 - 9:31pmKudos!
Rachel,
I must add my congratulations on your new tv show! Fantastic news. Here are some thoughts on show titles...
Since you break down the issues of the day, how about something like "The Political Distillery", "Daily Distillery" etc. This also combines your love of alcohol and politics/news. On that thought, how about naming your show after the newsagent's at the top of my road when I lived in Edinburgh: "Booze and News"!!!
Wait - that's even better. Newsagent. "Rachel Maddow, Newsagent." That makes you sound like a spy, which I understand you also are fond of.
For something a little dull but unassuming and allowing flexibility of content, how about "Newsbeat" or "The Beat"? This would especialy work if you are serious about having a live band! You could then have segments like Worldbeat, Washington beat, science beat, beatroot (for in-depth analysis), etc. Music by the English Beat?
A final suggestion. "Mind the Gap with Rachel Maddow" The title exhorts the viewer to be thoughtful, and the gap refers to the gaps in information that exist in other media reports. It's also a nod to your time living in the UK. Too subtle?
Also, thank you for being the only person in the American media who pronounces Edinburgh correctly!!

By demo4mccainAugust 22, 2008 - 9:44amVeteran's Medical Care
Rachel,
It might be a good idea to have a conversation with Paul Rieckhoff about what care the VA is obligated to provide to veterans, on air, or off. Over the years the DOD has backpedaled on those promises of lifetime medical care, and the care of veteran's dependents, and in fact, even on the care provided to dependents of active duty personnel. (A lot of active duty dependent and retiree care is provided on a space-available basis, and with base closures and other personnel cutbacks, there isn't space).
The VA doesn't provide lifetime care for all veterans, it is a much smaller subset. It is difficult now to even get a diagnosis of a service-related injury that would be then be eligible for VA care.
What my military retiree status does get me is a chance to buy into a medicare-like health care system that is pretty much exactly what we like to see for a universal health care system. I pay no premium to the DOD Tricareprogram, and I can see the doctor of my choice. There are some co-pays, but I am able to find a reasonable supplemental policy that takes the risk out of medical care. It has it's own deductibles on top of the Tricare deductibles. The doctor's office submits the paperwork to Tricare, I never see it. If there is a co-pay, Tricare forwards the paper to my supplemental carrier automatically. If there is a copay because of the deductibles, then I get a statement from the carrier, and eventually, a matching invoice from the doctor. Otherwise, I am not bothered with paper, at all, but can check those transactions on line, easily, if I so desire. For a prescription, I can get most medications through a Tri-Care mailorder pharmacy or at my local drug store, agian with a reasonable copay.
My point, though, was that the VA isn't in the care of all veterans for life business, and while that was the promise the DOD made to some vets, the courts rejected the case and DOD doesn't promise it any more.
Love your show, looking forward to the new one.

Listening to Rachel Maddow August 21 in the 6:00 hour, I heard her repeatedly refer to Barack Obama and John McCain as if they are the only two people running for president. Ms. Maddow's aware that Ralph Nader, Bob Barr and Cynthia McKinney are three high-profile independent/small party candidates seeking the presidency, isn't she?
Why not acknowlege and even report on the campaigns of Nader, Barr, and McKinney, too? When I hear Air America Radio hosts limiting such discussions, I think I'm listening to General Electric, Mickey Mouse or Viacom instead of the alternative to them Air America purports to be.
- Email this page
By jimlareginaAugust 22, 2008 - 11:02amWell, she's not just having
Well, she's not just having a discussion of the race for the Presidency. She's having a discussion about the men who might be President. Since there are only two people who have any chance of being sworn in come January, those are the only two she talks about.
Now, I know there's nothing wrong with someone talking about the other candidates. Those guys are running because they want to raise certain issues. So if someone wants to address those issues, there are a lot of good things to discuss about them. However, if someone only wants to only talk about the men who might be taking over the job of President, then that's reasonable, too.

By Jason M. BryantAugust 22, 2008 - 12:30pmTo Jason
Thanks for your response. But don't you think if Air America did what it purports - providing an alternative to corporate media - Rachel Maddow and other hosts would cover the likes of Ralph Nader, Bob Barr and Cynthia McKinney as much as they do Obama and McCain? Why do we need Air America if it limits its content the same way the corporate talk show programs do?
And if Air America covers the independent/small-party candidates, they would have, as you say, a "chance of being sworn in come January," right? Raise enough awareness of Nader, Barr and McKinney and what they represent, and more people will demand those candidates be included in the debates, won't they? Remember Jesse Ventura - he was not one with "any chance of being sworn in" as Minnesota governor until he got in the debates with Norm Coleman and Skip Humphrey.
Let Americans hear what Nader, Barr and McKinney have to say and one of them "might be taking over the job of President," to use your words.
- Email this page
By jimlareginaAugust 23, 2008 - 7:50pmTo answer your question bluntly:
Question: "But don't you think if Air America did what it purports - providing an alternative to corporate media - Rachel Maddow and other hosts would cover the likes of Ralph Nader, Bob Barr and Cynthia McKinney as much as they do Obama and McCain?"
No, not at all. 'Alternative' means different, it does not mean that they do things exactly the way that one given fan might want them to. Rachel Maddow does not provide the same program as other news shows. She may cover some of the same topics, but she gives a lot of news I'm not seeing elsewhere and that's enough to call her an 'alternative' even if she isn't the alternative that you're looking for.
As for those candidates, they do not remotely deserve equal air time to Obama and McCain. They're not really running for President. They're signed up for the race, but they know they're not getting the job. We know they're not getting the job. The people who vote for them know that they're not getting the job. They're running as a way of highlighting the issues that they care about, but the fact that they've chosen to do that by entering their names in this particular race does not give them a right to more airtime than other political activists. That's what you're really suggesting, that they receive vastly more airtime than other people who are just as influencial as they are.
If Rachel wants to talk about who will be President, then talking about Obama and McCain is the right thing to do. If she wants to talk about the issues that Nader, Barr and McKinney are promoting, then she'll talk about them and their campaigns. But they don't automatically deserve vast amounts of attention because they've chosen that promotion method.

By Jason M. BryantAugust 23, 2008 - 11:10pmAnd more of the same is what you'll get
Jason, as you say Rachel Maddow covers "the same topics" as corporate media - that is, Obama and McCain but not independent/small-party candidates - America will have more of the same come January 2009: a corporation-sponsored, corporation-controlled presidency.
Evaluate the public records, platforms, and especially campaign contributors of Obama and McCain and you'll see they are about as different as McDonald's and Burger King. One may be a little better, but neither is good for you.
With enough exposure, McKinney, Barr or especially Nader could win in November. But even if you view their campaigns as just "a way of highlighting the issues," as you say, check your U.S. history, Jason. Women's suffrage and other movements have succeeded because of political parties that "couldn't win" elections but forced the power brokers to give. Shouldn't Air America Radio be there to give those causes air time?
We can get Obama-McCain Obama-McCain Obama-McCain anywhere. Why does Rachel Maddow want to force more of it down our throats, unless she's hoping to land a job at General Electric,uh, excuse me, that is, M.S.N.B.C.?

By jimlareginaAugust 26, 2008 - 7:34am"Corporate" isn't a bad word to me, so that won't win me over
I'm very familiar with that U.S. history. It's why I say their campaigns are valid ways of getting a message out. They're just not valid choices if you're talking about who America has to choice from when deciding the next President.
I can back the idea that these other candidates should get more coverage. I just believe that the idea of them getting equal coverage is much too much and doesn't address the reality of the situation.
No, there is no amount of exposure that could make McKinney, Barr, or Nader win in November. They don't have the money, the history, or the support to come close to doing that. The simple act of filling out the paperwork to run for office does not automatically give them a right to media attention. Getting 50,000 signatures to get your name on the ballot is worth some news time, but the Democrats and Republicans do much more impressive stuff, so that will only get you so far. It is not the responsibility of the press to give them more exposure than their efforts deserve.
In fact, it's the opposite, the news has a responsibility *not* to give them that much exposure. The news has a responsibility not to *make* news, not to present a story that isn't true. They could have someone talk about Intelligent Design every time dinosaurs come up in the news, giving I.D. a boost in stature that it doesn't deserve. But they don't, because they have a responsibility to not to make one group seem just as important as another when it really isn't.
Again, 'alternative' doesn't mean they have to cover exactly what you want them to cover. It's not fair for you to say that because they don't report one story the way you want, they're just like every other news station. If you want things covered a certain way, start a blog.

Actually, let's just cut the bullshit.
You want the country to be more than a two party system and that's what this is all about.
You don't want Air America to be an "alternative," you don't want anything like that. You believe Air America should be covering those other candidates AND the "corporate" media should be covering them. It's total B.S. to suggest that you're just trying to get them to do things differently, you want *everyone* covering the third parties way more.
The third parties aren't viable right now, but you've decided that the news media should change that. You want them to totally abandon the idea of reporting news fairly, something they're already shaky on, and just go full bore into a propaganda effort supporting the third parties. You want them to pretend the third parties are just as strong as the main two until it happens.
So please stop pretending that this is about Air America living up to its promises. That's just a guilt tactic to get what you want.

"You want the country to be more than a two party system and that's what this is all about."
Two parties? All we have is one, the Corporate Party, with its divisions of the Democratic and Republican Party.
"You don't want Air America to be an 'alternative.'"
Yes, I do, especially since that's what Air America purports to be.
"You believe Air America should be covering those other candidates."
Yes.
"It's total B.S. to suggest that you're just trying to get them to do things differently, you want *everyone* covering the third parties way more."
Wouldn't more choices be better for America? There are how many cars and brands of soda, but we should have only two presidential candidates?
"The third parties aren't viable right now,"
But if Air America gave them adequate coverage, that would make Nader, Barr and McKinney more vaible, wouldn't it?
"You want them to totally abandon the idea of reporting news fairly."
Not covering Nader, Barr and McKinney is fair? To whom?
"So please stop pretending that this is about Air America living up to its promises."
Why should I continue listening to Air America if their coverage is no better than that of General Electric, uh, M.S.N.B.C.? At the gym today one of the televisions was tuned to General Electric, uh, M.S.N.B.C. at the Democorporate Convention. The anchor was talking to an on-site reporter named Rachel Maddow.

By jimlareginaAugust 26, 2008 - 1:26pmThe best way to inform the public is to keep quiet!
Jason, you said, "the news has a responsibility *not* to give [independent/third-party presidential candidates] that much exposure."
So there IS hope!

By jimlareginaAugust 26, 2008 - 1:27pmThat's not what I said.
No, I said that they have a responsibility not to give them more coverage than they deserve. What you said is that you're a petulant child who's going to hold your breath until Air America covers what you want them to.
Good luck changing the world with that attitude.

McSame is becoming more McLame by the minute...is there a possibility they will choose someone else for the nomination at their convention?
Think of the media frenzy that would generate. Talk about "head fake."
Just curious if it could even be a possibility.

I think he would have to withdraw with some professed health condition.....and I think IF it happened, it would after the convention, so they could make the next pick in a smoke filled room instead of in the national spotlight.
Jeb? or whom?
And, oh, it won't be the obviously progressing dementia, because that would be too embarrassing. They'll probably make an excuse related to his heart, or better still, link it to some side affect of his POW years, so he can still be a hero.
I always thought the grand plan was to usher out Darth Cheney before the end of 2006, and get Condi or some other RepubliCON in with two years of VP before this election, and I think the 2006 elections when the better guys took control of Congress upset that applecart.

By demo4mccainAugust 22, 2008 - 11:47amNew Olympic event - bicycle thievery? Gold medal to Canada
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/22/world/americas/22canada.html?ref=world
What exactly was he planning to do with 2,865 bicycles?
That is just one of many questions the police and others have been puzzling over since the arrest last month of Igor Kenk, the owner of a used-bike shop here.
Mr. Kenk’s legacy now fills a former police garage with a leaky roof. Organized by brand name and mostly resting on their handlebars, wheels pointed upward, are 2,396 of the bicycles that police say Mr. Kenk either stole or arranged to have stolen.
The jumbled collection of bicycles suggests that Mr. Kenk is the unofficial world champion of bicycle thieves. [snip]
Mr. Kenk was something of an informal social worker, Mr. Jansen explained, giving work to street people and outpatients from a nearby mental health institution. Of course, the police say some of that work involved stealing bicycles.

By chemgirlAugust 22, 2008 - 12:32pmJohn McCain's treatment of his wife and women in general
Rachel
I read in Michael Moore's new book, "Mike's Election Guide" on page 42 that a red faced McCain called his wife the C word when she mentioned that he was getting a little thin on top as she touseled his hair. As an investigative reporter, can you find out if this is true or simply a left wing rant? Supposedly, 3 reporters were witnesses to this. Which ones?
I think that this, combined with his rape jokes speaks volumes about his attitudes towards women and women's issues in general and needs to be vetted! You are the best political reporter I know of that so succinctly states the facts as they really are and this would really help America to see the so called "Straight Talk Express" for what it is, an old boys club!

By drdarkenyAugust 25, 2008 - 10:44amNot scientific but
I was listening to Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me (NPR) a few weeks ago and they came up with the perfect partner for Obama - Chris Dodd. BUT they have to use the old Muppet's song - Muhnumanuh. Only it would be Obama-Dodd! It was hysterical.
On a more serious note, I just hope he picks someone who compliments him politically and mentally. We don't need another Svengali VP. I seriously doubt W has made a single decision in 8 years (and probably before that). I want a President with brain power, not muscle (I'll bomb them all!)
Obama was not my choice in the primaries, but as a registered Democrat, I will support my party's candidate.
