Today's TRMS
The New York Times has already made it public so now it is time to talk about the great news-- MSNBC has given Rachel her own show. She will be on at 9pm following Countdown 5 nights a week starting September 8. Rachel will be talking about it on TRMS today and taking your calls. So to get on the line, call us at (866) 303-2270.
Then Rachel will be talking to John Nichols about who he does and does NOT want to be Obama's running mate. And Lou Dubose joins us to talk about the way Jack Abramoff continues to haunt the 2008 campaign.

Congratualtions Rachel!!!
I couldn't be happier for you...and for me! I am always telling people they should listen to you on the radio. Now I can tell them to watch you on TV. You are the most refreshing and smartest political person I have ever listend to. I feel smarter after every one of your shows.
Thank you for hanging on to the radio gig. Your core fans love you on the radio and we would be very sad to lose you to TV forever.
Now, make them buy you a whole new wardrobe and easy on the pancake! Your smile, your sense of humor, your passion for civics, and your BIG brain will be a refreshing change among the sea of boring, overblown white men on cable news.

I am in Kansas City, Mo and I stream the show on-line. I know it would be difficult to talk about Communication Policy on a Network channel, however it needs to be discussed in some form or another. Interview Juan Gonzalez and get him talking about it. That is what I suggest. Ownership and the method of client capture within the FCC is critical.

Any idea of what your show will be called? Can you get Kent to come back and work with you? I'm sure I won't be able to get to speak on the phone to Rachel, so here is my advice for your MSNBC Show. Stay just as you are. Your sense of humor, your smart, sober, coherent, intelligence choices of news items and commentary; keep up with the daily Iraq reports, some interviews with authors and news makers, even your "Ask Dr. Maddow!" By the way, I'm a lesbian and you are a fantastic role model. Don't feel you have to "talk about" being a lesbian, but don't hide it either - just like you are now. Also, how about going into more depth with some of the items than is usual on TV. Instead of 4 minutes or 3 minutes for a story, expand it a little to 6 or 7 minutes. One more piece of advice: I really hate the "left, right and center" "talking heads." Don't go there, please. We don't need to hear the Pat Buchanans of our country always ready to spin things to the right. We get enough of these dude and dudettes on all those other cable news shows. Keith is good as a model on this. He doesn't fool with trying to get "all sides" of an issue. No room left for more.... Love ya!

Please hit hard from the start with reality on your TV show.
What kept me coming back when I first started listen to TRMS was you starting your show with the news from irag and life during war time.
Please carry this over for the TV show. TV watchers need to hear this...
Many blessings to your new show and a BIG THANK YOU for continuing your radio show.

By peacemoon42August 19, 2008 - 5:44pmCongrats... and here's a suggestion...
Rachel - - We all knew you'd get your show. Hopefully, this means we'll not have to listen to *Race,* and just have you again on AAR.
As for an idea for your show... how about a show focused on the Media, critiquing how the Media reports things. We know McCain doesn't get any scrutiny, so a show pointing out Media coverage would be a breath of fresh air. Kind of like Media Matters On-Air.
And yes, a segment with Kent would be great.
Good luck (I have no doubt you'll do great... and you're not only starting on your grandmother's bday, but mine, too!)

By bazAugust 19, 2008 - 5:49pmMy "advice", if it's worth calling it that.
I'd really like it if the radio show officially started at 7pm and then simulcast your TV show. Air America can still simulcast RftWH if they want to, but don't call it part of the Rachel Maddow show. RIght now your website says the show starts at 6. That's great when we hear your voice at 6, but if RftWH plays at 6, the website should say your show starts at 7.
I'd like News from Iraq to be on the TV show. Usually you do it twice a day on the radio show, so do it once on the radio show and once on the TV show and it will work out the same but you'll have more time for other stuff in your two hours of radio. With video, that would be a good everyday segment. A lot of the stuff you mention is not covered much in other places.
Next piece of advice: no desk. Watching the video clips that have been posted of your radio show, it's obvious you have a lot of energy. That doesn't get across when you are behind a big desk.
Is there any middle ground between the "school principal" outfit and normal person clothes? The dress shirt that you wear on Countdown sometimes without a jacket is nice, and it's not so stuffy.

By Jason M. BryantAugust 19, 2008 - 5:46pmSuper Woo-hoo!
Time to program the DVR for that timeslot! :-)
"Ask a Vet", Underbelly, and Kent Jones are critical. All three are simply smart segments.
Don't have more than 2 guests at a time. All those talking heads in boxes is a turn-off and makes actual intelligent discourse impossible.
Congrats! So freakin' awesome! Smart TV news, who would have thought it was possible!

You've been doing a fantastic job on Race and filling in for Keith.
My suggestions:
The public is hungry for truth. This is why Amy Goodman is so successful.
Do the news behind the news, the censored news.
Include people with knowledge and truth instead of speculators, those who don't get invited to CNN and wouldn't want to go to Fox.
Include Bernie Sanders.
Include Harry Shearer. He's hilarious and right on. He does great videos.
Don't be America-centric.
Use someone from the BBC - there's a pretty funny guy on news night, and now I can't remember his name.
Use Larry Bensky, a real political guru: http://www.kpfa.org/bensky/

Hey, Rachel. My wife, Lynn, and I are big fans. Always benefit from your spots on Countdown on MSNBC. Congrats on getting your new show. I have been listening to you since the early Air America days. That goes especially for atime after a long evacuation from New Orleans, during post-Katrina, when I returned to to the city to live by myself in a retreat center and return to my work -- while the rest of our family was scattered from the storm. Your early morning shows, with your to-the-point, pertinent comments and your slightly bent sense of humor, always made my day back in those bleak times.
On your TV extravaganza, please, please bring back Kent Jones. Vig-i-lants!!!

By butchekstrmAugust 19, 2008 - 6:02pmSuperhuge congrats, Rachel!!
No way I'm getting through on the phone, so here's my 2¢: from the days of your morning show, your catalog of political tactics, the Underbelly, has been like a master's seminar in poly sci; there's just nothing like it for learning how to spot and name the river of bullpucky flowing your way. You've made education joyous, and God knows we need all we can get.
The humor is great, the buried lede is great, hearing Kent would probably make me cry, but most of all, I love the narrative of ignored news. You're going from an upstart, alt. media to a corporate chair, but please keep those ignored, buried stories in the mix.

WOW Congrats, I couldn't be happier.
My ideas for your tv show:
~~ How about a 'snopes' type segement (or actually maybe use the people who do snopes.com, they are wonderful people)... in which viewers/listeners send you the neocon emails they get from people who haven't quite figured out that we dont believe their lies, and you and your research team (hire me!) could find out the truth and you could present the 'evil email of the day' and then counter with the facts..it might go a long way to avoid the passing of the lies on the internet...and might help Obama as well..and after the election, well you know the lies aren't going to simply end there...
What do you think?

I would really like to see a FOX News debunk segment. Similar to Keith's "Worst" segment. Fox gets away with putting out BS on a daily basis with little or no rebuttal, outside of Media Matters.org. No one is more deserving. I phoned my mother and we were both elated! You will be the star of the network, right alongside Keith. Now I have faith that Obama might actually win, with you sharing your brilliance each and every night. There is indeed a god.
Way to go.

By 3dogownedAugust 19, 2008 - 7:10pmCongrats, Rachel.
I agree with people who say you should keep your regular political features, starting with the news from Iraq, w/ Burying the Lead and exposure of Republican (permanent) campaign tricks.
And you should have the same kind of guests - and lots of Scott Horton, Glenn Greenwald, and Christy Harden Smith - and Paul, of course.

More liberal media at The Sideshow.

By AvedonAugust 19, 2008 - 7:11pmWoooooooo Hooooooooo!
At the risk of sounding fan-girly, when I heard about your show my eyes got wet. I'm so excited, and so glad you'll be staying on the radio too.
Please keep the "news from Iraq and life during wartime."
Please keep the segments on Iraq and Afghanistan Vets of America.
Also, Burying the Lead. One of your gifts is you educate people without making them feel ignorant in the process. Please keep pointing to the important stuff. We need you there.
As for what to watch out for - ahh, just be you. You'll be fine. The only thing I thought about was don't get caught using the PR "phrase of the day," or you'll end up in a montage on The Daily Show. Hah!
As for you getting comfy, I had a friend who was a news anchor, and she wore her softball shorts and went barefoot, and just looked 'professional' and flawless from the desk up. :)
I personally think it would be cool if you could find a way to do your show while standing, as you seem to be more comfortable that way. You'd just have to figure out how to stay still enough not to drive the camera folks nuts. :)
Enjoy. Soak it in. You completely deserve this.

By Buxtehude_BarbarossaAugust 19, 2008 - 7:43pmYou Rock Grrl!
I am so happy for you and for us!
Not only are you smart as a whip, progressive, witty, and caring, you are a Soft Butch Lesbian role model for so many young lesbians (sorry about the label... but if the comfortable shoes fit).
You are right behind Ellen in helping people know "us" and realize that Lesbians are strong, smart, cute, and Love America too. Thanks... you.
Ha Ha Rush, now look who's heard of "Rachel Maddow"?!

I am so happy and proud of you! I have been a very loyal listener and even got XM radio when my local station took you off the air! You are exactly what the TV "mainstream" needs to hear. People can finally learn facts and truth that is conveniently left out of other shows. You have really good advice from others here and I echo them - stay yourself and don't let the producers change your story! GO Rachel!!
