do you actually believe that every fat person is a glutton?
:-/ really??
as if everybody can afford REAL food?
come on...
most of the 'affordable food' is beyond the reach of the average North American.
... or the education level of the average person on the dietary implications of FrankenFood... the implications of FrankenFood is lost on most of us...
so we cannot either fight for our right to ACTUAL food...
or justify the larger chunk of our operating home budget to bipass the pitfalls of FrankenFood...
its not *merely* BigSugar & BigBioResearch poking about with the content of our food.
its not merely about bad food standards or the industrialization of food...
its also about Genetically Modified Organisms, the lack of research on those consequences... & the removal of WATER from municipal programs... yup, why get FREE WATER the way even ROMANS provided it...
when you can privatize it & BigSugar can sell WATER... hell, you don't need sugarcane field slavery or monoculture corn AgriFarms...
you just need to make sure that municipalities can't afford or desire to provide water to their own citizens...
That the snack machines in schools were the problem with the fat kids. They took out the soda and snack machines, problem should be solved right? Can't figure out why what raised us is not good enough for our kids.

Corn sweeteners are the most important refined corn products. Last year, corn sweeteners supplied more than 56 percent of the U.S. nutritive sweetener market.
The second major refined corn product is Ethanol, which is gaining increasing acceptance as a cleaner burning option for motor fuels.
The third major corn product -- a mainstay of the industry and of the U.S. economy -- is Starch. Americans rely on corn refiners for over 90 percent of their starch needs.

No, I do not think every overweight person is a glutton, BBP, and you make some smart points. There are many pertinent factors. I concur, socio-economic status probably plays an important role. Genetic predisposition and disorders are chief culprits in some small proportion of cases. On the whole though, I'd argue that overconsumption is the largest cause of the increase of weight-per-capita and obesity in America over the past twenty or thirty years. Certainly, as you suggest, there are forces that compel us to eat more poor quality food, and the food industry is one of those forces. Here's a pretty comprehensive paper on the topic.
The cartoon itself focuses on children. It depicts two children discussing what they think is “normal” and what they view to be abnormal. Children learn what is normal from watching people around them. It’s a tragic reality (recent data suggest) 1/3 of Americans have a normal weight/height ratio, 1/3 are overweight, and 1/3 are obese. This means, in the average American city, two out of every three people are carrying extra weight. So what is normal in America? Unfortunately, for American kids born in the past twenty years, being overweight is normal. Eating more than they should is normal, too. It's all they know.
