My impression of Americans, and I generalize here, have trouble with understanding what "english as a second language" folk mean. Whether or not they say it in their native tongue, it's so important to first understand that what is being communicated is from a different culture, with a different language that has it's own nuances. The caricature of the "ugly American" is the guy who just starts talking louder when the foreigner is struggling to speak English.

The charge will be stickey: My little sister (42), whom I love dearly, is not stupid but she's a single- issue voter, that issue is NRAish. She recently complained that Obama shouldn't be prez because he is Muslim and has a Koran in his home on his coffeetable. In the next breath she complained that she didn't want a prez that was indoctrinated by that whacko Revrend Wright. She claims she doesn't watch FauxNews.
My response was to point out that either he was a Muslim OR a Christian, and I wouldn't allow her to hang both nooses on him.
