Special Friday Dose of Declan!

By The Lionel Show

Watch: "Tramp The Dirt Down"

You guys know the deal – I’m a huge Elvis Costello fan.

Check out this interview clip from from a 1989 BBC TV series, wherein Costello explains his profound dissatisfaction with Margaret Thatcher and her foreign and domestic policies. If you think his palpable venom makes you tumescent, wait until you get to the performance.

The song is entitled “Tramp The Dirt Down”, and is possibly the most bitterly caustic screed ever twisted in to the form of an Irish folk ballad. The lyrics are reproduced in full below, but I’d like to highlight the refrain regarding the narrator’s feelings on Thatcher:

Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
long enough to savour:
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

Ouch! Check out the clip to see a performance remarkable not only for its venom but also for its uncomfortable relevance to 21st Century American politics. Here’s a man in his middle years who still has the good sense to be pissed!

Tramp The Dirt Down

I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child's
face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
coming down on that child's lips

Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
long enough to savour:

That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

When England was the whore of the world
Margaret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
the black tar of MacAdam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn't
haunted by every tiny detail
'Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
all she thought of was betrayal

And now the cynical ones say

that it all ends the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just
squeezed the life from his only son
And how it's only voices in your head and
dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between
justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful
discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up
for punishment
And then expect you to say "Thank you"
straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you've only got the symptoms, you
haven't got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can
filled up with dreams then poured down
the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being
blown to bits or beaten and maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame

Well I hope you live long now, I pray the Lord
your soul to keep
I think I'll be going before we fold our arms
and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life
could be so cheap

'Cos when they finally put you in the ground
They'll stand there laughing and tramp the
dirt down

Immigration

Lately Mc. Cain has been walking on the edges on this Issue to the point that now I am sure he just will do whatever the far right says, and I am beggining to believe this was his agenda all along I am not a big fan of conspiracy theories of strange schemes but the fact is that Mc Cain gets with Ted Kennedy and drafts an Immigration bill strangely enough it actually gets discussed in the congress after the two round battle it gets defeated but it raised the right wing agenda to the top of all air waves, the phones lines of congressman are filled with messages to block right wing radio hosts make it their #1 prioirity "we have to defeat the ammesty law" the party unites around the issues and the far right gets a huge victory they have accomplished one thing more importat than the party itself and that is to show their strenght, and how they can move their agenda, Mc Cain seems a lonely voice in the republican party, BUT the final result was a more united party and they were able to deflect all the attention from the surge to this issue just on time, immigration and the brown enemy were the issue in 2007 not the surge, not Irak, after this wow the miracle comes Mc Cain says he wouldnt sign on his own bill and the improbable happens he gets the nomination ummmhhh exchanging favors for getting the party united by raising up an issue that would inflammate the base?
I have always suspected thet the immigration bill was a smoke courtain and the hispanic people were used, hate speeches and all republican talk inundated the conversation.
Now Mc Cain came and took hipanics as if we were Abels and killed the hopes of millions of people tyhe Hispanic must know that Mc Cain is not our firend those of us that have the luck of being able to vote must tell him Enough with the lies Mc Cain has elected a far right woman to be at his side she has not made comments on immigration but there is something that we know and that is that republican party congressman in Alaska have opposed the Mc Cain bill and Palin is likely to have the same approach.
Mc Cain lies to the Hispanic because unlike Obama thinks yes there are people that benefit when a mother is separated from his child and that is Mc Cain and The Right wingers that bring the message of hate against the brown people.
