Dispatches from the Custodial Abode

Love the show. But what

Love the show. But what does the "Hello Everybody!" routine refer to? I'm laughing...but I don't know why.

Thanks Lionel for the perspective alongside the sales pitch that is the DNC.

Thanks Everybody!

It refers to the hammy,

It refers to the hammy, over-enthusiastic style of many talk radio and television hosts. Imagine 60 and 70s radio - there were these folks called "pukers" who always talked like that. A good example is this sort of thing:

Hello, evra-buddeh! Eight after the hour, and its nothing but sunshine outside. Lets throw it over to Crazy Karen for the traffic report. Honk honk!

That kind of thing. Make sense?

Thanks for listening,

Derm (producer)

An example

Man#1 - Hey buddy, how's life?

Man#2 - Eh, it's been shitty. Lost my job, wife's a whore, and my son is sleeping with my daughter...

Man#3 - HELLO EV'RY BUDDEH!

Indeed. I forgot to mention

Indeed. I forgot to mention that, as in the above example, it is made even funnier when used in an attempt to diffuse the awkwardness of a given situation.

Wow - I just connected with THE Derm!

Thanks for the explanation - I'm in the far north and don't often "get " all of the classic Americana happening on Lionel. It reminded of many a Harry Karrey (sp?) impression.

Laughed out loud at my desk when Lionel asked the caller to call him later tonight to read the report to him - can you use a sexy voice...HA HA...good times.

Thanks for great show ev'ry buddeh!

In the big tent

This is good. Lionel spent so much time today speaking ill (albeit playfully) of the blogger tent at The Denver and then right after his show is over, LionelVision switches over to Thom Hartman's show live from - where else? - inside said blogger tent.

Jersey:

You get it, my friend. You get it. And I love you for it.

bloggers

With the exception of a few like the Daily Kos and the Huffington Post, political blogging is just another opiate... for the slightly literate rather than for the masses. It makes people think they're doing something meaningful while in fact all it does is use up their energy and time and distract them from taking any real action. Imagine what would happen if one out of every 10 political blog entries, or comments thereto, was instead sent to the writer's representative in Congress? Congress wouldn't know what had hit them. Imagine if one out of every 100 bloggers actually volunteered to go to a battleground state and help work for the candidate of their choice? Ah, but that takes actual work and sacrifice.

I've been diverted too. Not by political blogs, but there's a computer tech forum on the web to which I've made more than 12,000 posts in about six years.. So I know something about what I'm talking about here. Even at only 50 words per post average that's a couple of fair-sized books, more so in fields like mine where half of the page area is taken up by screen snapshots.

The trouble, of course, is that it's just very easy to dash off a paragraph or two worth of forum post or blog comment, and it's immediately rewarding: you get immediate recognition in the form of replies (even if they disagree). Doing anything meaningful: A book, or even a magazine article (or a similar quality missive posted on the web), as always, takes a lot of work, including some work that isn't fun. Nearly every blogger will tell you that blogging is fun. There's probably a lesson there.

I would encourage both of

I would encourage both of you to check out my blog entry today.

Best,

Derm

"Kooks" at the convention

While I can understand Lionel's point about certain groups limiting their exposure during a campaign event, I don't see the convention as a campaign event.

Face it, if you are trying to sway the center or the right from the convention, you've already lost. The right (and I mean the far right, in this case) thinks of "Impeach Bush" people and "9/11 truth" people as kooks, yes, but they also think of "pro-union" "gay friendly" and "universal heath care" in the same way. Even the more centrist Repubs have to keep that R by their name, so they tend to agree with the far right on this.

As far as the idea of sending the "Impeach Bush" crowd to the Republican convention goes. Quite simply, they won't be let in, they will be relegated to the protest areas away from the cameras.

Why aren't you at the DNC Lionel?

You'd be a breath of fresh air.

The DNC?

Perhaps because they'd throw him out on his arse?!!!? LOLOL
