Today on The Lionel Show - Tuesday August 26th.

By The Lionel Show

In the words of Britain’s once-towering symbol of disaffection and anarchy, “Ever feel like you’ve been cheated?”

The Sex Pistol’s final show in San Francisco was a glorious mess that very publicly popped the bubble of whatever it was they had once represented. Whatever they had symbolized up to that point, however powerfully they had crystallized the disaffection of youth and the seething pulse of anarchy vibrating just below the surface of an outmoded and ineffective political system, the show ended up a spectacular turd floating in the punch bowl of their brief career.

Taking the stage as The Sneering White Hope, they revealed themselves to be a shambles, a band no longer banded together, a fumbling, clumsy unit ultimately less than the sum of its parts. What they had always lacked in musicianship they had often made up for in verve; this absent, the Winterland audience was treated to a halting, awkward set which offered little evidence of their previous ability to incite passion or inspire venom (or play decent rock music, for that matter). In the parlance of rock musicianship, they sucked. It was over. Lydon’s middle-finger question to his audience seemed to encapsulate the generational anti-climax of the evening.

“What did you think we were?” he seemed to be asking. “The answer to your yelps of frustration and rage? Hell, we’re not even a good band anymore! Piss off.”

Call me whacky, but I’m starting to feel like its 1978 and I’m watching the Sex Pistols disintegrate their way through a ramshackle, un-inspired set. I feel as if I’m watching a once-dynamic front-man who is neither being adequately supported by his backing band nor offering evidence that he can carry the performance on his own.

The only difference is, the Sex Pistols were never nice. If they perhaps let their audience down, they never liked their audience anyways, and were always more than happy to tell their fans or devotees to take a long walk off a short stage. Their career was a grand exercise in irony and posing, and derived much of its force from antagonizing everyone and everything in its path. Concession and favor-courting were decidedly not their style; you either liked them or you didn’t, and either way you could and should go f*@k yourself.

The Dems, of course, can’t strike that nihilistic of a pose. They could, however, reassure me that they are still a group that can make powerful music together. They could also learn a bit from Lydon and Co.’s willingness to take a dramatic stance and weather the fallout, indeed, to use the fallout to their advantage.

Where the hell have the Democrats been vis a vis McCain’s confusion over the number of houses he owns? Where the hell have they been regarding Rush Limbaugh’s 2004 accusations that John Kerry was a kept man with a billionaire wife, an argument they could easily turn around and focus like a laser beam on McCain? Where the hell have they been? They could use a dash of the middle finger that Lydon used so well.

As it now stands, I feel as if this election has already got by us, that we have let it slip through our fingers like so many grains of sand. And once this show is over, we may get no opportunity for an encore.

If Wikipedia can be believed, happy birthday, Lionel! I enjoy your show immensely. Still can't believe the New York station dropped you for an infomercial, but now I listen on-line. Keep makin' sense!

Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's... Obama?

An apt metaphor.

In both cases, the 'progressive' ideas that once made them potent and relevant have become commonplace - practically the currency of the realm. They should be moving on to new battles and new ideas, but instead they cling to what once worked.

And just like the Pistols, the Dems come off looking dated and pathetic, one-hit-wonders desperately trying to revisit their glory days.

What bothers me is how many people blame this on the front man, when the problem is more fundamental. Johnny Rotten was powerless to sing or thrash his way out of a bad show, unless the Pistols as a whole had it in them to continue innovating punk music.

Similarly, there will be much nashing of teeth when Obama loses in November, but Obama will have had very little to do with our defeat. The loss will be on ideological and strategic grounds, because the party has advanced an obsolete platform that no longer inspires.

Wake me up when an ideologically potent candidate takes the stage.

Pistols!

I saw the Sex Pistols once in San Fran - okay show.

Swift boating McCain

You mean the serial plane wrecker who spent five years in a tropical paradise, being waited on hand and foot as a Vietnamese film star until he decided to come back and con an heiress into financing his attempts to destroy America?

:)

Let's get more facts out there.

The heiress was a second-generation home-wrecker who as the sole heir to the Jimmy Hensley beer fortune pretends to be an only child despite the existence of two half-sisters, Kathleen Hensley Portalski and Dixie Burd.

Of course, as a result of his enhanced, rugged and/or aggressive interrogation, he may still be "programmed" to do the bidding of his Vietnamese and Chinese film producers. Of course, highly-placed Chinese officials know the cue, and some in the right-wing establishment do. It may be a sound, a gesture, a tune, but it reliably and instantly makes McCain remember some of the more unpleasant rehearsals for his films and cause him to give up resistance. If you look at the immigration bill, the torture bill and more, it fits a pattern that someone "got" to him to drive the abrupt flip-flop.

His college career is disturbing. His rank of 894 out of 899 students at the US Naval Academy shows that he is borderline retarded or he is exceptionally lazy and undisciplined. There can be no other explanation and either case should disqualify him from the presidency. America has fared very poorly under a stupid, lazy president -- we don't need another. Then, there is the issue of how he even got in the Naval Academy. It is an elite institution and for normal students, it is extraordinarily hard to gain admission. You need your Representative in the House to recommend you to go there. Since his academic record shows that he was unfit to attend the academy, and his father and grandfather were both admirals in the US Navy, it is obvious that he got in through corruption. If Barack and/or Michelle Obama MAY have benefitted from Affirmative Action (which is doubtful, considering that both have exceptional intellects), it is certain that McCain benefitted from NEPOTISM (one of the oldest forms of corruption known to mankind)!

Keating 5?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY L-TRAIN!

WE LOVE YOU...KEEP THE INFO AND LAUGHS COMING OUR WAY.

Happy B-day Lionel.

You're right .

The democrats are a bunch of wimps, and we just might lose this thing because of that.

By the way Lionel, did you really see the Sex Pistols last show or are you just using this as a metaphor?

If so I dont think the democrats are anything like the Sex Pistols because the Sex Pistols at least had some guts.

But they similar in the sense that I guess that neither the dems nor the pistols seem to stand for anything in particular.

Oh well, Ill still keep my fingers crossed for Obama, maybe he can win anyway just because McCain is so befuddled.

R-A-W:

Thanks for your comments, but Lionel didn't write this, I did (Derm).

And no - I wasn't even born when the Sex Pistols played their last show. In fact, I wasn't even in utero.

Thanks for reading, and take care.

Best,

Derm
