Joe Klein calls the McCain campaign "Angry Amateurs"

By thePoliticalCarnival

By GottaLaff

Exactly:

So what's going on here? Two things. McCain is just plain angry at us. By the evidence presented in the utterly revealing Time interview, he's ballistic. This is a politician who needs to see himself as the man on the white horse, boldly traversing a muddy field...any intimations that he's gotten muddied in the process, or has decided to throw mud, are intolerable.

The second thing is more insidious: Steve Schmidt has decided, for tactical reasons, to slime the press. He wants the public to believe that there is an unfair--sexist (you gotta love it)--personal assault going on against Palin and her family. This is a smokescreen, intended to divert attention from the very real and responsible vetting that is taking place in the media--about the substance of Palin's record as mayor and governor. [...]

But I hope my colleagues stand strong in this case: it is important for the public to know that Palin raised taxes as governor, supported the Bridge to Nowhere before she opposed it, pursued pork-barrel projects as mayor, tried to ban books at the local library and thinks the war in Iraq is "a task from God." The attempts by the McCain campaign to bully us into not reporting such things are not only stupidly aggressive, but unprofessional in the extreme.Bingo.

LOL

And the media is saying "keep your eye on Palin. Don't worry about what Cheney is doing in Georgia."

So what's new?

Jukebox Johnny McWetStart looks and acts angry because he IS angry. He's an angry man; there's no other way to view him, because he's never shown anything else. Only an angry man would call his wife a "c*nt", in public, with open microphones surrounding him. Only an angry man would tell a fellow Senator to "f*ck off" while the Senate was in full and open session.

The United States can NOT afford to have an angry man in charge of the Football.

Right now...black, with lots of little speckles. But maybe that has something to do with it being NIGHT here.

Palin

They need to show her shooting wolves from planes and tell the public she wants to ban abortion.

They are doing that now. Call it criminalize womens reproductive rights. I remember illegal abortions and women getting them done in garages. They need to illustrate that.

So you're comparing shooting

So you're comparing shooting wolves to killing babies? Only in the liberal mind!!!!

You are incapable of

You are incapable of thinking more than one thought at a time? He never compared the two. There is a wonderful word in most languages in the world. In English it's AND. That does not mean either/or.
No wonder you misunderstand everything. You're always setting up false comparisons.

Mayor Palin had $6M budget & spent > $40M in Funny Money!!!

[As governor h]er legislative accomplishments were principally in the oil and gas arena. In 2007, just after taking office, Palin acted on advice from a close circle of advisors and trashed a complex agreement Murkowski [(elected governor on November 5, 2002, defeating his Democratic opponent, Fran Ulmer, 56%-41%)], had negotiated with major oil producers for a $30 billion-plus, natural-gas pipeline.

Palin's alternative was a solicitation to bring in an independent pipeline company to do the project, arguing the state shouldn't let the major oil companies own most of Alaska's energy infrastructure. That process was played out in 2008, with the Legislature's approval of Calgary-based TransCanada Corp. to receive a state license entitling the Canadian company to a $500 million state subsidy in return for agreeing to meet certain requirements for a pipeline. ...

The Veep’s Pipeline Push - Michael Isikoff, NEWSWEEK Aug 23, 2008

A two-year-old letter by Vice President Dick Cheney that pushed a controversial Alaska natural-gas pipeline bill is getting renewed scrutiny because of recently disclosed evidence in the Justice Department’s corruption case against Sen. Ted Stevens.

According to a Justice motion, Stevens told Allen for a $250,000 kickback, "I’m gonna try to see if I can get some bigwigs from back here and say, ’Look … you gotta get this done’." Two days later, Cheney wrote a letter to the Alaska Legislature urging members to "promptly enact" a bill to build the pipeline.

The executive director of Cheney’s energy task force is a lobbyist for firms slated to build the pipeline.

As mayor of Wasilla in January 1997, Palin notified the town librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons that she was being fired because she believed Emmons did not fully support her administration. She rescinded the firing of the librarian after pushback.

Do you see a pattern in sync with her TrooperGate abuse of power that mimics Goodling under GONZO regarding Iglesias, Lamb, et. al.?

Here's your sign:

Palin, in charge of the city's 25 officer Police Department, also instituted a policy requiring department heads to get her approval before talking to reporters.

During her second term as mayor, Palin hired an Anchorage-based lobbying firm to lobby for earmarks on advice from Senator Ted Stevens former chief of staff Steven Silver to secure nearly $27 million in earmarked funds for her 6,700 constituents. Despite that she managed to leave office with Wasilla $22 million in debt.

"Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reversed progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents."

"The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be ...

Ya think?

Jews and other Americans still know little of Zionism's past. But today only programmed fanatics can come away pro-Zionist after reading plain facts. Indeed, according to the American Jewish Identity Survey (2001), less than 22% of all Jews declare themselves Zionist.

Opposition to Zionism also grows among liberal educated gentiles, every time their declared enemy, Pat Robertson, howls in favor of Orthodox Israel.

For complex historical reasons, the Vietnam anti-war movement and anti-apartheid campaign emphasized demonstrations over sustained education. Even in victory, little was left behind in the way of attention to foreign affairs among the broad masses. Even after 9/11, the ultimate attention getter, US public knowledge about the Arab world, Islam, the oil industry, Zionism, and Washington's involvement with them, is minimal. But the present anti-Iraq war movement has no choice but to systematically educate itself and the public. The issues are too complex for anything less. Ignorance or illusions about any of the players, here or there, means certain death for X number of Arabs, Israelis, Kurds, Muslims and Americans. ...

You don't have a God given

You don't have a God given right to kill babies. So what you're saying is that only women should have the CHOICE to kill their babies? WOW.

Shut the fuck up, bohunk.

It is MY body, MY choice.

Once you grow a vagina THEN you can spout your bullshit. Until then, shut the fuck up, honky.

You don't have a god.

As opposed to their HUSBANDS having the right or choice?

Or maybe their RAPISTS?

Pray for yourself. You need it more. Meanwhile, keep your misguided and ill-conceived legislation off her body. It doesn't belong there, never did, never will.

McCain/Palin '08: the also-rans.

There is no difference

There is no difference killing a baby in the womb or out of the womb. Murder is murder however you sugar-coat it. Now as far a your wretched body, gutter trash, I couldn't care less what you do with it. It is the babies body that you mutilate that concerns me.

MY body, MY choice, Cocksucker. Or do you prefer bohunk?

Honky? WhiteTrash? Ignorant redneck? Well, in any case, they all suit you.

Do you have the slightest clue as to what 'choice' means? Got a mission for ya - go to your local
L-I-B-R-A-R-Y, get a D-I-C-T-I-O-N-A-R-Y, look under the letter "C" (it's the third letter of the A-L-P-H-A-B-E-T-, after the letter "B"), and look up C-H-O-I-C-E.

Do you have a vagina? No, well, mentally you do, but physically, no. Until you can acquire said genitalia, worry about your OWN body, not a WOMAN'S.

To bad your mother didn't have the common sense to mutilate your sorry ass.

Bite me, wigger.

ROTFLMAO!

Dog forgive ME? LOL - Wow! That's rich coming from you, cracker!!!! The fake christian ... LMAO

I will agree with you on one thing ... MY CHOICE, Just because YOU don't agree with it, doesn't make it any less MY CHOICE.

That's YOUR opinion, which you are entitled to. And, like they say, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

How's that radio reception, wigger?

"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."

You guys are actually discussing the center of "women's rights".

.

Women say they own their own bodies and will take care of them "thank you".

Christians men say, "Not so fast".

According to the Book that says Noah's Ark is a real story and Samson lost his strength when he mullet was offed, men "own" women's bodies.

That is the center of the debate.

Whether or not women are "allowed" to own themselves.

Once again, listen up

Once again, listen up children. We, on the right, don't give a damn what you do with your wretched bodies. It is the bodies of the living children inside your wombs that concerns us. Murder is murder whether the children are still inside your bodies or not. Birth these children and then give them up for adoption to worthwhile couples that will love your children more than you.

Damn pukie. If you don't care about your soul, surely you care about your daughters. Please ask for forgiveness that GOD won't hold the sins of the mother against her child. Love your daughter!!!

By bebeholmesSeptember 5, 2008 - 1:27pm

Now in the early books of the bible god said that when at war the women of the enemy should be taken and raped. Has that changed since JC came along?

LOL - Since I don't believe in god, I'd say your

argument is moot. As far as my daughter? She's raised in a secular home and has grown into a fine young woman, without god. NEVER question my love for my child - I'd rip my heart out and slam it on the counter if it will help her succeed in life.

See, you confuse religion, morals and values: Religion is faith; morals and values are life. I teach my kid life - how to suceed in life, how to play well with others. Just because we don't have religion in our household, does not mean she is not raised to be a moral person, a person of self respect, a person of honor, a person of compassion.

We have faith. We just choose to put it in humanity, in people and the inherent good in people. Not some white guy with a flowing white beard and flowing robes up in the sky.

"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."

Don't pretend to care

Come on now. Be honest. You guys don't care what happens to these children between birth and enlistment.

You don't even want to give health care to the children we have now.

We know you don't care what happens to the mother.

How many children are waiting to be adopted?

You guys are so dishonest.

Jesus was the "first" and "greatest" community organizer. You guys "mock" community organizers.

What does one thing have do to with another?

Come on. "Mainstream" media is practically giving Crash a handjob. He's going to get a pass on everything from here on. What does YOUR reality look like? That christian police state you've dreamed of? You might just get it.

Palin...

....still not sure if she's gonna help or hurt McCain in the end.....be interested to see the poll numbers after the convention.

Saw a poll where Obama is up 7 points (50 to 43)....if McCain/Palin don't put a dent in that after the convention the fat lady will be warming up IMO.

That said....the only way Palin can possibly help the ticket is if she turns into some kind of victim/sympathetic figure. I think the Dems (advocates) are making a mistake in attacking her family and making insinuations and such...need to stick to the issues.

The Dems would have been better served semi-ignoring the Palin pick than go into full attack mode.....just my 2 cents...

If this thing tightens up after the convention...watch out.

..and another thing

I don't think this pick was about going after Hillary folks. I think it was about going after dissaffected repubs and undecided. I don't think these attacks on Palin are going to endear Dems to those people.

Speaking as an ex-repub....it doesn't sit well with me either. Hasn't changed my mind in any way about Obama but it is slightly exacerbating.

You guys talk alot about repub hypocrisy but I see alot of Lib hypocrisy on this board in regards to Palin...."Beauty Queen"....questioning her decision to run because of her baby ect.....doesn't sound much like was is preached about taking women seriously/feminism ect....

Like I said....if she becomes a victim she'll be an asset in november and it looks like Dems are well on their way to doing that....stick to the issues and Palin is just a in-experienced 1st term Gov of Alaska....

Well look what the fuckin' cat done drug in!

Welcome back, multi-striper! Always good to have an actual, REASONABLE conservative voice on the blog. I may disagree with much of what you say, but you say it with undeniable forethought, and to say it is certainly a right that I for one would NEVER take from anyone.

You have some excellent insights into the whole Palin dog-and-pony show. The repubs aren't after Hillary's rank and file at all. Never really were...as tai chi masters say, "When you feint to the East, strike to the West."

I don't think Palin can compete on issues...she doesn't know enough about them, even with the first-class coaching she is likely to get.

However, might I suggest that the attacks on this blog and elsewhere, are possibly a reaction to her known proclivities and the possible hypocrisy thereof? After all, this is a politician who loudly advocates a zero-tolerance abstinence program, and who tried to have books banned in her little town. That's the unforgivable sin, in my view. A society that restricts information is headed down a dangerous road.

Anyhoo, it looks to be an interesting couple months. Good that you could make it!

I have to back up the previous comment concerning SgtD (and the few other conservatives/ex-conservatives) that darken these doorways.
SgtD it is always nice to see what you have to say, please don't hide. I don't always agree with you, but I do agree with your assertion that some footsies need to meet with some fire, the money needs to start showing up at the same time as the mouth. I feel, all things being in the sunlight, that being forthright is far more important than being "right" when it comes to politics and the differing of opinion. There is something about elections that makes one really lose respect for pretty much anyone opening their mouths.
I have always considered myself pretty aggressive with my political opinions (as my rare but brusque comments have shown), but two things that I can never seem to tolerate are the forcing of one's opinion upon another, or the cynical adherence to a "party line" as an excuse to spew the nastiest of venoms against anyone not in the same dogmatic shoes.
As far as last night- subtracting all other valid or invalid erupting scandals- Sarah Palin proved to be a pretty shitty human being. After Senators Biden & Obama, each said stern but supportive comments about Palin (i.e. "lay off the families", She "is certainly well-qualified", "Impressive adversary"", she said the nastiest things about both of those men. Belittling, sarcastic, mocking- showing no sincere respect for her opponents- and at the cost of NO TANGIBLE STATEMENTS regarding her own policy, or even understanding of policy.
She certainly was not alone, but I expect it out of the others. Two representatives from corporate America- you know, those "Americans just like us", and Rudy "Have you heard about 9-11" Giuliani. [By the way - HAVE you heard about 9-11?] Being a NYC resident, I am used to Rudy's relationship with polemicism, vindictiveness, and hyperbole- it is the longest relationship I believe he has maintained in his life.
But McCain- one of the short (and shrinking) list of Republican office holders that actually, genuinely respect and admire, is no longer the man I thought he was. If there is one thing I have learned in life is that if you ever look at someone and think that they aren't what you had thought they were- well then chances are they never were.
To all the trolls that like to come on here and show there ass as well as their complete lack of manners, respect (self-respect or respect for others), or even the most rudimentary grasp of English composition- I leave you with this question for you:
While last week, the theme was not red/blue America, but one America working together, and this week’s message is that anyone that is not an adamant Republican, then by default you are as pansy, corporate, anti-American, traitor wishing only to kill babies and surrender a war just moments before victory.
There are so many holes in that fallacy that it doesn’t warrant a retort- so my question is…
What is the country going to look like? I mean whilst you are making all these enemies with your coarse and vindictive character assassinations, had you thought about the fact that these are the same people that will be staring back across the aisle on that ubiquitous “day one”? Do you really expect co-operation from anyone after such shoddy treatment…I mean these attacks aren’t limited to just the two top candidates, but to the entire: media, coastal elite, Washington cocktail party circuit, activist liberal supreme court judges, and America-hating liberals, not to mention the rest of the entire Democratic party and any independents who may drift away from such bile.
Need we even ask what would happen if you took that same tenor when dealing with foreign nations? What about the countries whose cultural differences may be too great to just charm away such aggressive statements and stances- Is the partisan, unilateral, hubristic stance really how we want to pose for our yearbook photo with the world? I implore you; please convince me that bullying is the best method of policy, both domestic and international.
SgtD –beyond policy, contemplation, being fully informed on issues, or any of the other things avoided during the speeches this evening- I am most terrified by the methods of the followers- the fact that division, polemics, and dissention is the only way that a large portion of this country can conceive of anyone not identical to themselves. The Republicans have merely become the masters of ringing the bell for those led by fear- and in the service of big money. SgtD- how does one break through that and find that kernel that is capable of accepting discussion, capable of engaging in negotiation; that diamond deep inside that truly believes in making the best out of this country –and that working with others is the only way this will happen.
Maybe I am just some listless dreamer, maybe people are by nature stupid and only capable of being led by reptilian urges like lust and fear. I just think that talking with such a measured conservative (or ex-conservative) as yourself, that maybe not everyone believes in some Manichaean world view, where we are God’s warriors and someday we will destroy all evil from the Earth. That maybe there are people that I can disagree with that won’t then call me immoral, amoral, lacking in character, unpatriotic, or even evil.
I’m not holding my breath, so consider this a longwinded compliment wrapped in a lot of words of genuine concern for every American citizen.

Great Points...

....and my point about the attacks on Palin on the personal front is that basically it has the dems falling into the personal destruction game that the repubs have proven masters of.....don't need to play that game because in the end it will be to the repubs advantage.

I agree...

...and even though we dissagree quite often I appreciate the back and forth.

I think you're right that Palin will be over her head if pressed on issues....but I wouldn't underestimate her either.

Dems just need to pund the issues and basically ignore Palin in regards to her family/personal decisions. Theres enough to hit Palin with without going there.....nuff said.

Oh, no one is underestimating, I think...

I imagine Biden is working a bit more OT prepping for the debate.

And, I do hope you are staying safe. Or at least as safe as one can be in your line of work.

You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.

Thanks....

...fortunately, being in aircraft maintenance, I don't (actually never) come under fire very often.

I think this low-balling Palins abilities in the dabate is going to put extra pressure on Joe. Her expectations are so low that he'll have to blow her doors off...

Agreed, Sarge.

What does Palin think about tax cuts for the rich only?

What is her stance on "free trade" agreements?

Where does she stand on deregulation of things like the media, investment banking, commodities speculators and the Sherman Anti-trust Act?

Does she think Social Security should be 401K'd?

Does she think the executive branch has the right to ignore the Constitution? What is her stance on an authoritarian executive? Does she think the VP is a fourth branch of government?

Where does she stand on FISA and did she think retroactive immunity for criminal corporations is a good thing?

What is her stance in the Military Commissions act and whether American citizens should be given the habeus our constitution guarantees?

I could predict her stances on each of these issues, but it is up to the Dem pundits in the corporate media to shift focus away from her vagina and inexperience and to the things that actually matter and get her on the record regarding these issues.

When you look at buffoon appointments like Gonzalas, Mukasey. Brown, Chertov and Goodling, to name a few, putting an incompetent buffoon in a postition of importance is par for the Republicans.

The people need to understand Palin's positions on more than the degree of sexism in America, the abortion issue and the gay issue. None of these issues affect millions of Americans' bottom line and their ability to provide a good life for their family.

Exactly!

....for example, I liked her speech last night and thought she did a good job to a point. If it's dissected properly though....she basically said nothing in regards to policy other than generalities...ie big gov bad/national security good.

If the dems stay on the issues they win...if they play the personnal destruction game which IMO they are at the moment...it only helps the repubs in the end. If the repubs can show Palin as a victim and make this about non-issues they have a shot.

Keeping women from

accessing abortions or preventing gays from getting married will do absolutely nothing to the median household income for most of America. It will not provide protection to Americans from bankruptcy due to medical bills. It will not stop white collar criminals from stealing your 401K. It will not level the playing field so unloyal corporations have more incentive to keep good paying jobs at home. It will not pay for your child's college education. It will not pay the newly escalated monthly payment of your variable interest predatory mortgage. It will not stop age and health discrimination against baby boomers in the work place. It will not un-profitize your state's workers compensation program. It will not prevent millionaire senators from insider trading from the Senate floor. It will not stop the lobbyist bribes that buy the lobbyists the ability to write their own legislation. It will not stop the government from illegaly spying on you.

It will only allow already rich people to get richer while punitively annoying the very people they will continue to screw over economically.

Your genital shape, nor skin color are good predictors of ideological stances. I would vote for a blue-skinned hermaphrodite that was born yesterday if they planned on giving America back to the people.

The DLC will continue to tell their lackeys to pound the inexperience and female issue in the corporate media. Afterall their job is to ensure a Republican remains president.

Hear hear!

Well said. I plan to bring up this very topic in my SOC 101 class this fall. Now, Palin won't tell us this, but most of these christians are for outlawing birth control also. What would outlawing abortion and birth control, do for the neocons? Combine that with "Let them use ER for their health care needs." Hmmm...an undereducated, obedient work force that breeds quickly and dies young? Damn, that could put us in the running to provide cheap labor for China.

I haven't heard ONE MENTION about the economy,

healthcare, the middle class in three days ... did I miss something or is the economy and other important issues facing the middle class, 'mythical'?

I must say thank you to the RNC last night...

I felt I was watching a History Channel documentary about life in ancient Sparta, especially during Rudy's speech. Palin wasn't much different. The tone seemed to be that America is a warrior nation, and warriors are the only ones who should lead the country. We civilians exist to worship and serve our military, and the only aim of American foreign policy is to further our military objectives. In other words, it goes against everything our founding fathers believed in and espoused.

If America is meant to be a nation ruled by the military, like Myanmar, then let's just cut the pretense that civilians have a right to choose the nation's leaders. Change that "damned piece of paper" as Bush calls it, and require that the only people who can hold public office must be current or ex-military. I am totally sickened by the warrior nation mentality of the repub party at this point. All the time spent last night talking about being a commander in chief, and the military challenges that confront us, but almost zilch about the faltering economy, growing unemployment, the mortgage crisis, outsourcing of jobs and the like. I guess we really must be a nation of whiners to even think about those things when we should be concentrating on whom we should be bombing next.

change

What has McCain done, so far, after being the worst possible candidate for the conservatives , The right wing media, and talk shows, tried their best to stop him from becoming their candidate. But from the start, there never was, a great selection to choose from. McCain's weakness was that he was a maverick, which he has turned into a strength, by following Obamas lead into change, Forget about bush, who they have praised these last 8 years, Now they don't even want to know him. Now its all about change , Put into their own words but change is still the theme. Palin is part of this , the first Republican female vise president candidate. thrown in as a hail Mary. After waiting to hear her speak for her real first introduction to the nation , even though I'm voting for Obama, I wanted to hear something good, but it was the only speech that i wanted to change the channel half way through. In short conservatism is dead for now.But with him in office , their will be no change , for the neocons. And their agenda.

Has anyone read the interview McSame did with Time?
