Only as tall as we stand

By Avedon from the Sideshow

400,000 terrorists? "After having begun a series of investigative stories criticizing the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in May 2008, CNN reporter Drew Griffin reports being placed with more than a million other names on TSA's swollen terrorism watch list. Although TSA insists Griffin's name is not on the list and pooh-poohs any possibility of retaliation for Griffin's negative reporting, the reporter has been hassled by various airlines on 11 flights since May. The airlines insist that Griffin's name is on the list. Congress has asked TSA to look into the tribulations of this prominent passenger." Really? Congress is just now asking, after years of harassment of innocent people - including one of their own members? It's not as if this story is news - early on, we recall the story of a member of Ralph Nader's presidential campaign (and not someone with a particularly Muslim name) who mysteriously found his ability to fly being curtailed in 2002 because he was "on the list". Everyone named David Nelson (including Rick's brother), has had the same problem. And does "Ted Kennedy" sound like the name of a Muslim terrorist? The old German Jews who helped raise and educate me are all dead, now, but I know exactly what they'd say about governments that make lists of people who it's okay to harass. Thom Hartmann discussed just this process in the first hour of his show, yesterday.

"Slammed: Welcome to the Age of Incarceration [...] We treat 10-year sentences like they're nothing, like that's a soft penalty, when in much of the rest of the world a decade behind bars would be considered extraordinarily severe. This is what separates us from other industrialized countries: It's not just that we send so many people to prison, but that we keep them there for so long and send them back so often. Eight years ago, we surpassed Russia to claim the dubious distinction of having the world's highest rate of incarceration; today we're still No. 1." It's also the most expensive way to run a criminal justice system, just in terms of the sheer dollars wasted on keeping people imprisoned, and never mind the many, many costs in families destroyed, crime increased rather than reduced, and whole neighborhoods disrupted. (Via Cursor.)

Digby warns that falling for Mukasey's gambit would be "a political mistake of epic proportions [...] setting the table for possible decades of being pressured and intimidated into supporting wars and military interventions against the best interests of the country and the world --- not to mention their own political interests. It is not a winner for liberals to help the conservatives pursue their imperial goals. There's no political need for this, so if they do it, one can only assume it's because they actually support the Orwellian concept of endless war." (And wow, dday says that McShame even managed to lose Joe Klein.)

Mukasey's antics inspire more signs that Steve Soto has lost his patience: "For years now, all Leahy and Schumer needed to do was throw the Senate GOP's attacks against Janet Reno's alleged lack of independence back into their faces, and demand to know what's different now. But that would require guts and brains, and since Schumer and Leahy are part of the same vile Beltway party as the GOP, it's a moot point." (Also: Blood for Oil - Once dismissed as a "conspiracy theory", it's now an in-your-face fact.)

What if McCain held a town hall and nobody came?

What if McCain held a town hall and nobody came?
Wed Jul 23, 4:15 PM Pacific

According to a video report posted by Scranton, Pennsylvania's Times-Leader, John McCain's town hall event in Wilkes-Barre earlier today featured an underwhelming turnout -- more than half the seats were empty. About seven hundred folks showed up -- a decent sized crowd, perhaps, but it left nine hundred seats empty.

Meanwhile, when Barack Obama visited Wilkes-Barre on April 1, more than two thousand people attended -- not including the line of people that were turned away by fire department officials.

pic of half empty seats from the event

This is obvious

The local media hardly announced the McCain event but when it was Obama's turn, it was on every channel several times. No bias here....

That is because no one

cares about your ancient, boring McSame. Obama is interesting and relevent.

Probably

but the american people are still smart enough to vote McCain in.....

The American people never voted Bush in.

Bush came in second to Gore and Kerry. Does that mean the American people are stupid? You would not be saying that if Hillary was running. Obama is a horrible candidate but McCain is worse.

Wrong

Bush beat Gore and Kerry. That's why he's in the whitehouse. Get over it. You are right about Obama and McCain being less than optimal candidates. Clinton's not much better but this the hand we're dealt.

Bush lost to Gore by 600,000 votes

The American people did not choose Bush, the supreme court did.

This is why

it so important to get more conservatives on the high court. So this doesn't happen again.

There is only one conservative

on the high court. The rest are right wing extremists.

Isn't it odd

...that even after Cowboy-hat Oathbreaker stuffed SCOTUS, they STILL ruled against him on Gitmo?

One might almost think that the Constitution itself has a liberal bias...which would explain why the RepubliCANTs want to see it destroyed.

If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error. ~~~John Kenneth Galbraith

McCain will never be president, but even if repubs find a way to

rig yet another election, even the repubs have given up on holding on to the seats they have in congress. Repub strategists expect to lose seats in the senate and the house, so a McCain administration would not have the veto-proof majority that Bush enjoyed for his first 6 years. Considering the fact that even a lot of repubs don't like McCain because they think he isn't "conservative" enough, and the fact that many of his repub colleagues in the senate don't like him, I would expect that a hypothetical McCain presidency would be a series of humiliating failures and defeats for any legislation he wanted to pass that was in the least bit offensive to congress.

If John Dubya manages to steal this one...

Even before he is inaugurated...

"No no, it's WABBIT Season!"

You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.
---Ray Bradbury

I honestly doubt he will get the chance to steal it without

an overwhelming amount of support from the MSM. Even the small amount of coverage he has gotten so far has exposed him as an ignorant, clueless old man who can't speak for more than a minute without making some embarrassing gaffe. The only way he has a chance is if the media totally ignores him, or does nothing but glowing stories about him while totally trashing Obama. It would have to be effective enough to make the race closer than it is now, so that vote rigging on Diebold machines can do the rest of the work.

I think before that happens, something would be done to boost his chances of winning. The number one contender is an attack on Iran, probably by Israel launching a first attack on its own. The US would then support them with its own strikes, perhaps on the pretext of "protecting" Israel from any possible counterattack.

Vote McCain?

McCain graduated 5th from the bottom of his class at the Navel Academy. You can proudly watch him announce it on Youtube in the same smart aleck way that Bush did when he told the graduating class at Harvard, “You don’t need A’s. Look at me, I got C’s and I’m president.”

Some reports listed McCain’s graduating class at 599, others at 899. 899 would be way worse than 599. Don’t cha think?

That’s what comes of the sons of the elite, one from a former president, the other an admiral, getting into places based on the rich person’s Affirmative Action, “family connections”.

Finally, we have a real person who made it on their own smarts and the right hates him because, take a pick:
He’s black
His name is funny
He’s not white
He’s too smart

The right attempts to take this family man, who wants to raise his children in a strong and safe country and turn him into an anti-American violent extremist.

Obama isn’t the risk, it’s John McCain who is the risk.

Look on the bright side

This will give you libs another four to eight years of blog fodder.

Uhhh...

Yeah... That and the Republic just might step back from the brink of the abyss.

You, and assholes like you, HAVE INFLICTED SO MUCH DAMAGE to our economy, military, social fabric, national prestige, Constitution and the rule of law, THAT IT WILL TAKE GENERATIONS TO REPAIR, IF IT CAN BE REPAIRED AT ALL.

At my age, I won't live to see it... You and the whole Reagan conservative revolution that picked the flesh off the bones of this nation like vultures... then sold the bones to foreigners... have doomed me to live the rest of my life in a broken nation.

Eat shit and die, you motherfucking Contard.

FUCK YOU!

Actually,

Liberals like Bill Clinton caused most of the problems in this country. Reagan saved us from the failed policies of Jimmy Carter and 30 years of libs in the congress.

Oh yes.

Clinton's eight years of peace and unprecedented prosperity?... yeah, everybody hated that... especially the way ALL economic classes benefitted instead of only the wealthiest Americans.

Carter's energy policy that would have prevented virtually ALL of our current problems??... and brokering the lasting peace between Isreali and Egypt??... yeah, what an asshole.

Yeah, Reagan saved us all right... ran up a debt larger THAN ALL OTHER PRESIDENT'S COMBINED and deregulated all industries UNTIL CORPORATIONS WERE FREE TO STEAL FROM AVERAGE AMERICANS LIKE THE COMMON CRIMINALS THEY ARE.

Oh yeah, you assholes saved us all right... saved us from the terrible burden of peace and prosperity. THANKS!

Huff

I noticed you are posting your opinion that Obama will lose all over the board. How many times do you need to express this? Is it just a mention of Hillary losing that sets you off?

If you have not read the polls

It is a fact that Obama will lose due to the racism of Americans. Hillary would have been choosing new carpet for the oval office by now. But at least you kept your principles, huh jackass. Hillary 2012!

Huflarry

But at least you kept your principles, huh jackass. Hillary 2012!

It is your opinion that Obama will lose. You are welcome to it.

But if it comes to pass then Hillary will take the blame. There is no chance in hell she will be the nominee in 2012 in that scenario. You though she would be in 2008. Even more people will be like me and refuse to vote for her after what she did.

Hillary won the primary vote

without people like you. After the Obama catastrophe she will win bigger.

By hufflarry2000July 25, 2008 - 1:28am

I almost hope McCain will win so I can watch you get all pissed off when Hillary loses in 2012.

f u bush2,

It seems to me that larry is forgetting that Obama is leading in states like Missouri, Neveda, New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Wiscoson, Ill., Iowa, Minnisoda, Ind., Georgia, and a few other states that was red the last time around. He is also making grounds here in my home state of Oklahoma.

sorry rim_dcb

He is not. He will lose all those states plus Ohio, Michigan, PA and Florida. Romney will win Michigan easily.

Better look again

...you're using severely outdated data.

Battleground States Spread
Colorado: Obama 47.0, McCain 45.3 (Obama +1.7)
Virginia: Obama 47.3, McCain 46.3 (Obama +1.0)
Missouri: Obama 45.0, McCain 47.5 (McCain +2.5)
Michigan: Obama 46.3, McCain 41.7 (Obama +4.6)
Ohio: Obama 46.5, 45.0 , McCain (Obama +1.5)
New Jersey: Obama 47.0, McCain 38.5 (Obama +8.5)

Notice that Jukebox Johnny is ahead in exactly ONE of those races. The other five go to President Obama.

Feel free to claim the data lie. You'll just show yourself to be as big a crybaby as Billary, who LOST the primary cycle fair and square (the DNC made sure of the "fair" part).

Romney will win Michigan easily.

Apparently free-trade, reactionary aristocrats play well in Michigan these days. That's an interesting circumstance.

Huh?

What's Romney running for? Last I heard he'd bowed out of anything to do with this Presidential election cycle...although rumor had him on the "short list" as Jukebox Johnny's running mate.

If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error. ~~~John Kenneth Galbraith

By nonexistent manJuly 25, 2008 - 1:15pm

Many speculate that if things go bad for McCain that he'll claim health issues and Romney will take over as nominee.

By rlm_dcbJuly 25, 2008 - 1:36am

Obama is bringing new states into play. The Dean strategy is a good one.

Huff is clueless. He's using primary results to suggest Obama can not win certain states. If what he says is true then it is the Clinton supporters that are failing us. And she would be an idiot to think the rest of us would support her after that.

Obama is to the right of senator Clinton

Given you expect Obama to loose; I hope you consider McCain relevant.

I've finally gotten an upgrade.

Hello everybody. The long overdue upgrade to hufflarry model 3000 has finally arrived. The upgrade has helped me realize what a scummy campaign Hillary ran. I now see that Obama deserved to win, and that he won fairly. Obama deserves to be our next president, he is definately the best person for the job.
The upgrade should also cut down immensely on my silly outbursts that have happened so often in the past. It should also give me the ability to compose coherent, well thought out posts that actually add to the conversation instead of just throwing out wild insults.
Here's to hoping the upgrade takes and I don't have to revert to the old 2000 model.

It wasn't news.

"The local media hardly announced the McCain event but when it was Obama's turn, it was on every channel several times. No bias here...."

As McCain often tells us, he does lots and lots of those townhall events.

Obama's world tour is something unprecedented, and everyone seems to think he's going to be president - plus, he's just more interesting than McCain, who they know is just going out in public and trying to BS everyone and grab a headline.

In addition, the media actually like McCain, so they don't actually want to put the spotlight on him while he's running around embarrassing himself with one moronic comment after another. Why do you think CBS actually covered up for his idiotic remarks to Katie Couric? Because they like him. They wouldn't have done that for Obama.

I mean, here's a guy who:
A) was Governor when senior Taliban officials came to Texas for high level talks with Unocal about a pipeline through Afghanistan
B) gave a gift of $43 million to the Taliban almost immediately upon occupying the White House
C) has ties to family members of the leader of an organization supposedly responsible for the 9/11 attacks who is harbored by the Taliban
D) pledged $3 billion in to Pakistan and a leader who everyone openly admits harbors the man supposedly responsible for 9/11

And that's just for starters as a few examples off the top of the head.

More good news for Obama

Obama has now gotten the latino vote that he didn't get in the primaries. In fact, the newest Pew poll shows he is more popular with latinos than Hillary was.
