"U.S. Found Not Trustworthy: British officials are convinced of the same thing that the U.S. public has learned the hard way, that the occupants of the White House are not to be trusted. Their word is not good, and the British government can no longer act on it. The American government is not directed toward the good of its allies, any more than it is the good of the citizens it was elected to serve." That is, they won't accept our government's assurances that it's not torturing people.

At World O' Crap, an encounter with a whacky, pants-wetting article by a right-wing nut inspires "If You Have Nothing To Fear But Fear Itself, Then Make Fear-ade: However, the prospect of Armageddon doesn't seem to bother Kyle-Anne nearly as much as Obama's insinuations that fear is a bad thing, because as Nietzsche said, "Whatever scares the crap out of you without actually posing a threat only makes you a stronger Republican." And this is one woman who's not about to give up her night-terrors and allow herself to be ground down into a bloody pulp by the Politics of Optimism."

Why The New York Times rejected J. Sidney McCain's op-ed submission.

Dday offers a good breakdown of the meandering story of Maliki's support for Obama's withdrawal plan and how the White House has tried to re-spin it. (Also: Victory for Janet Jackson's nipple. And Digby learned who the most loathed cable gasbags are among their peers.)

This linky post from Mick Arran includes the news that, "The NY Times, after 25 years of turning a blind eye, finally explains how the banks got blood from a stone."

Julia expands on her review of the media's love for John McShame.

This whole "purity ball" thing is even creepier when you remember what part of the population is most likely to sexually assault their own daughters.

Talk About A Guy You Can't Trust...

...How about a guy, who changes his positions more often than most people change their socks? Come to think of it, it's too bad that Obama couldn't have helped the Democrats in today's Congressional baseball game, pitting the Republicans against the Democrats. Being such a political switch hitter, Obama might've helped the Dems
avoid their eighth straight loss (1) - losses that've occurred ever since Bush has been president. Kind of mirror's the Democrat's political fortunes for the last 8 years doesn't it (in terms of either losing elections or failing to stop Bush from having his policies passed by Congress)?

Talk about a Guy You Can't Trust...

Yes let's talk about McCain. Why is his new nickname Jukebox John? Because he changes his tune every few minutes, (i.e. he flip-flops).

A few of his flip-flops from the article:

1. McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.

2. McCain insisted that everyone, even “terrible killers,” “the worst kind of scum of humanity,” and detainees at Guantanamo Bay, “deserve to have some adjudication of their cases,” even if that means “releasing some of them.” McCain now believes the opposite.

3. He opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects. When the Supreme Court reached the same conclusion, he called it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”

4. In February 2008, McCain reversed course on prohibiting waterboarding.
[..]

7. McCain was for kicking Russia out of the G8 before he was against it.

8. McCain supported moving “towards normalization of relations” with Cuba. Now he believes the opposite.

9. McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Hamas. Now he believes the opposite.

10. McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Syria. Now he believes the opposite.

11. McCain is both for and against a “rogue state rollback” as a focus of his foreign policy vision.

12. McCain used to champion the Law of the Sea convention, even volunteering to testify on the treaty’s behalf before a Senate committee. Now he opposes it.

13. McCain was against divestment from South Africa before he was for it.

Plenty of supporting links and many more flip-flops in the article.

How about a guy, who changes his positions

I KNOW, Junior! Mad Cow McSame was for campaign finance reform before he was against it; he was against torture before he was for it; he was against offshore drilling before he was for it; he was against the "agents of intolerance" before he decided to stick his head up its collective ass ...

Yeah, I hear ya - that McSame makes a fish out of water look positively LIFELESS!

Anger

Boy, did you see how those soldiers cheered Obama? What a sight, huh? And didn't McCain look like a whimpering little puppy - you could tell he didn't believe a word he (McCain) said. What a joke. You can tell they are getting desperate, even trying to cover the negative stock market, pretending it hasn't dropped like 2,000 points in a month. Do we have to wait until November to boot these bozos out?

As a Democrat and a U.S. citizen, I have EVERY RIGHT to be angry at the screw-ups of THIS administration!

Can't we take a hint?

Maliki agrees with obamas 16 month exit strategy plan. And the re pukes were crying foul. Even had some guy trying to say it was a mistranslation. What he didn't say was that the translator was one of malikis own translators. If this occupations goes on beyond the 16 months. We will be like Syria when they finally left Lebanon. What part of thanks , and now you can leave, don't we understand.Scott has it right supporting the troops, is not just a slogan, Getting them out of this occupation , is supporting the troops. No one has yet explained what winning is,Supporting the troops , started with me , when i had a few beers , with someone from the Nam war, Let me put it this way, i did not enjoy myself. And had a lot of restraint. Now i have go through the same thing all over again. This occupation might end, but the memories of those, that seen body's scattered out on the landscape will last a life time.

Obama's Trip: Substance or

Obama's Trip: Substance or Drive-By?

By ABIGAIL HAUSLOHNER / BAGHDAD

Excerpt:

..."While Obama's trip has been getting saturation media coverage in the U.S., however, the Iraqi media has barely batted an eye. Obama's visit got only a vague mention on the local TV networks' afternoon news hours, and it failed to make the front page on any of Iraq's top newspapers. Only in Al-Dustour did an article make reference to the visit, quoting Iraqi politician (and former Bush Administration favorite) Ahmad Chalabi as saying: "Obama wants to prove that he's qualified enough to be Commander in Chief."...

So you're saying

...that Obama in Iraq is actually getting more press than McCain in the US. Thanks for pointing that out. But we were already aware of it.

Good job shedd. Now tell us about how McCain tied up over a hundred soldiers and two gun ships for a photo-op showing walking around buying coffee. You know the trip I'm talking about. The one in which McCain was trying to say how safe it was while wearing that fashionable bullet proof jacket. The trip where soon after he left the scene, the suicide bombers struck just to make a point.

By f u bush2July 22, 2008 - 1:19am

And 21 of those market workers were ambushed, kidnapped, & executed the very next day following McCain's photo-op.

Who gives a shit if there was coverage of Obama's trip in the Iraqi media outlets? I'm guessing you just liked the use of the phrase "Drive-by" alongside "Obama" in a headline.
You should care more about the fact that the coverage of it here in the US has placed McCain even further in the background. It looks like the US media doesn't care much to cover the coming loser...

BTW: for shits and giggles, maybe you could give us all the breakdown of coverage of Bush's Iraq visit in Iraqi media outlets? say, maybe, focusing on if there was more or less coverage given to the sitting pResident of the US than there was given to the next President of the US...

Shedd: BHO was on a "DEATH WISH" trip, or the "NEWS" was FAKE!!!

CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

BHO arrived at a military controlled airfield in Amman on an Osprey V-22, with his traveling sidekicks Sens. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., and Jack Reed, D-R.I. Not one, but four, aircrafts dramatically landed at Marka airport as campaign aides, secret service, and a small protective pool waited for the arrival. Obama soon strutted off of the second V-22, sporting wrinkled khaki pants, a blue oxford and a helmet in hand.

Barack Obama lands in Jordan

Barack Obama landed in Amman, Jordan, about 2:15 p.m. local time for the next stop on his international tour, arriving from Iraq on a V-22 Osprey helicopter. He stepped off the helicopter wearing khakis and a wrinkled shirt and carrying a black helmet and flak jacket.

Republicans blasted Obama today for flying into Jordan in an Osprey aircraft, which Obama has opposed in the past. There’s just one problem — McCain also criticized the Osprey, and also flew in one during his Iraq trip in May.

Back in 2007, McCain dismissed the Osprey as untested and too costly. You can see pictures of McCain arriving in the Osprey and the full story here:

Senator Obama has made quite clear that he intends to eviscerate our most advanced defense programs. In a message to Caucus 4 Priorities, a liberal pacifist organization, (available on YouTube), the Senator called for major cuts in defense spending, for slowing or suspending the development of future combat systems, for the abolition of spending on the "weaponizing of space" ("Star Wars") and the slashing of investment in our ballistic missile defense program. More broadly he promised to support the group's policies. These include:

- reducing the National Missile Defense program to a basic research program; cutting spending on platforms like the F-22 Raptor, the Virginia-class Submarine, the V-22 Osprey airplane/helicopter hybrid, the DDG-1000 destroyer, and the Army's Future Combat System. Also, the group advocates reducing America's force structure by eliminating two Air Force fighter wings and one aircraft carrier battle-group. ...

The Osprey V-22 is a DEATH TRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A SINGLE POINT OF FAILURE BOONDOGGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fact that the "NEWS" said he was on it, means that all the REAL REPORTERS are 6ft under, or that BHO is an IDIOT!!!

FOR THE STRAIT DOPE ON THE Osprey V-22 (that even Vader acknowledged to be a higher risk than a Pinto) see:
http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,1665835,00.html

If BHO actually put his life in the hands of a pilot with NO FEAR OF DEATH, as any base-jumper or ultralite extreme flyer will tell you is NO BIG DEAL, then he is an IGNORANT PUTZ. The reality is that since he's a former HARVARD LAW JOURNAL EDITOR, the Osprey V-22 story MUST be a HOAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McAncient may be stupid enough to get in a LEMON AIRCRAFT, after ejecting over enemy territory in Vietnam and surviving FACE CANCER, as he has been reported to have done, but BHO is WAY SMARTER THAN JFK Jr. who flew his last flight with a copilot (who he didn't recognize), to his death.

BTW:

Despite that JFK Jr.'s copilot being late having been the reason for his flight departure delay, the tardy boy's body was NOT recovered from the crash site, go figure. Also, due to JFK Jr's ankle injury there was NO WAY that he would have flown over his wife's objection without another pilot on board, it is a misconception that visibility was a factor that was debunked based on time specific flight recorder correlated NOAH weather records, and the ATC response to MIA calls was COMPLETELY BIZARRE, and the state of the master fuel cut-off valve can NOT be reconciled with he "OFFICIAL' story, all FACTS!!!

Even the blackbox recorder's flight path contradicts the premise that it was pilot error, or equipment malfunction, leaving only a SUICIDAL NOSE DIVE as the alternative. BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McCain gets $1,930 a month from 'broken' Social Security system

In 2007, he received benefits of $23,157 from Social Security, approximately $1,930 a month. The maximum monthly benefit under Social Security is $2,185. Social Security benefits are determined by age at retirement. ...

In 2006, McCain's wife Cindy earned $6 million, and has a net worth of approximately $100 million. ...

http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/stories/2008/07/14/daily79.html?...

SSI (supplemental security income)

is not social security. It is the federal welfare program for low income disabled people who have not paid in enough to qualify for social security benefits.

You are partially correct..

You are correct it is a federal welfare program for low income disabled people who do not qualifiy for Social Security disability, but they can receive SSI if their disability benefit is less than the SSI benefit. It is also for people over full-retirement age that do not receive very much in their Social Security. One cannot receive SSI if thier Social Security, disability or retirement, is more than the base SSI benefit. One cannot receive SSI if they are under full-retirement age and NOT disabled.

A belief in one's own perfection is often a sign of a delusional mind - Malkavian

hufflarry2000: Good catch. What acronym would U prefer, SS? ANAL

Supplemental Security Income (or SSI) is a monthly stipend provided to aged (legally deemed to be 65 or older), blind, or disabled persons based on need, paid by the United States Government. The program is administered by the Social Security Administration. Payments are made from the US Treasury general funds, not the Social Security trust funds. The program was created in 1974 to replace various state-administered programs which served the same purpose, as a way to standardize in the level of benefits through the addition of Title XVI (Title 16) of the Social Security Act.

This is better?

The Waffen-SS (German for "Armed SS", literally "Weapons SS") was the combat arm of the Schutzstaffel ("Protective Squadron") or SS. In contrast to the Heer, Germany's regular army, the Waffen-SS was a group of combat units composed of volunteer troops with particularly strong personal commitments to Nazi ideology and selected on a racial basis, so that people such as Jews or Poles were not allowed within the organization. As stated by Himmler, the primary goal of SS formations was to fight Jewish people and people considered subhuman by the racist Nazi ideology (e.g., Poles, Jews, Serbs, Roma people) and communists.

I'll bet she'd differ.

Rochester, New York is the former home of Frederick Douglas', North Star newspaper. In 1964, it erupted in one of the first large-scale urban outbursts of the decade. Precipitated by white police violence against the black community, the July uprising lasted several days, subsiding only after the arrival of 1500 National Guardsmen. In "the fall of 1964, the FBI, at the direction of President Johnson, began to make riot control training available to local police departments, and by mid-1967 such training assistance had been extended to more than 70,000 officials and civilians."(2)

On July 29, 1967, President Johnson issued Executive Order 11365, establishing the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders. It is more commonly known as the Kerner Commission, named for it chair, former Major General, and then Governor of Illinois, Otto Kerner. The creation of the commission came hot on the heels of the violence in Detroit, a conflict which left 43 dead, several hundred wounded and over 5,000 people homeless. Johnson sent troubleshooter Cyrus Vance, later Secretary of Defense, as his personal observer to Detroit. The commission issued its final report, completed in less than a year, on March 1, 1968.

Although the Kerner Commission has over the years become associated with a somewhat benign, if not benevolent character, codifying the obvious, "we live in two increasingly separate America" etc., the fact is that the commission itself was but one manifestation of a massive military/police counter-insurgency effort directed against US citizens, hatched in an era of emergent post-Vietnam "syndrome" coupled with elite fears of domestic insurrection. While the movement chanted for peace and revolution, rebellious, angry and destructive urban uprisings were occurring with alarming frequency, usually the result of the usual spark, police brutality, white on black crime ...

That's a keeper. I know of another similar to this but I haven't seen this one before.

Media Matters documented another Lie from Fox News

Fox News' Jarrett falsely claimed Obama is making his "first trip to the Middle East"

During the July 19 edition of Fox News' America's Election HQ, anchor Gregg Jarrett falsely claimed that Sen. Barack Obama's overseas trip, which includes planned stops in Iraq, Israel, and Jordan, constituted his "first trip to the Middle East." In fact, as Media Matters for America has documented, Obama made a January 2006 Middle East trip that included stops in Iraq, Israel, and Jordan.

It just goes to show, if you

It just goes to show, if you rely on FOX as your source for "news", you are not getting accurate information.

It's one thing to claim that the MSM is "nicer" to Obama, or dedicate more time to him versus McCain. But to spread outright lies is the domain of FOXNews.

-- McCain = Four more years of the same --

It's nice that the soldiers in Iraq get to meet

the next president of the United States

It's funny what happened

Maliki is on record agreeing with Obama on troop withdrawal. Then suddenly a statement is released that Maliki was misunderstood. Then Maliki releases his plan that differs from Obamas by a couple months.

Well even if it were not documented that Maliki did in fact agree with Obama, it would be pretty easy to see what is going on. Maliki is of course walking a fine line. With a discreet order Bush could make his life a living hell or bring it to an end. Bush is the leader of the occupying force in Iraq. Until we leave, we must all remember that there is no true sovereignty in Iraq. This news was bad for the republicans and dirty tricks are nothing new for this administration.

If I may digress for a minute...

Had a random thought on the whole"Rene Marie singing Lift Ev'ry Voice" instead of the Star Spangled Banner thing in Denver a couple of weeks ago. First of all, it's a great song - and unfortunately not one many whites know of or anything about. I think one of the great things about Obama's candidacy is that the majority culture may finally become acquainted with the minority culture and its roots, not just gangbangers, rap stars and football players. The brothers Johnson (yeah, I know it was a soul group) were two accomplished, (and in James Weldon's case a fascinating Renaissance man) songwriters and and authors who wrote this fabulous spiritual and, God help us, patriotic homage to America. I find right-wing hysteria on this small-minded and a perfect example of why the Obama candidacy could be such a bell-weather for America's need to integrate more fully with the minority culture.

How about having "Lift Ev'ry Voice" sung at the inaugural?

We people who live in the big cities

are very familiar and integrated with "minority" cultures, thankyou.

Bullshit

This type of cultural arrogance is exactly what I'm talking about.

You dont know what you are

talking about, you never do.

Sure

Like you have a clue about the distinctions between Caribbean, Nigerian, Northern Afro-American, Southern Afro-American and Sudanese "Black" cultures. Or the deltas between Afghani and Punjab, or 100 and 1 other "non-white" subcultures that are here in substantial numbers and interact with each other daily and are under the radar of the "majority" culture. Obama has the distinction of experience with Asian, White and Black cultures - main reason why he is such a popular and articulate politician.

You, on the other hand, are such a friggin blindered moron it's not even funny anymore.

I am a minority where I live

and I interact with different cultures daily. Unfortunately, I also must interact with know-it-all idiots like you. Your life experience is just yours, not everyone elses.

"Interact" - More BS

When I was a kid & parental units disowned me, I knew a guy who was running poverty programs in South Providence. Kenny got me into a welding training program where I was the only white guy in a class mixed with Southern blacks, northern "citified" blacks, and a couple of Port-o-gees (from the Azores - bunch of these guys in East Prov). I lived worked trained and partied with those guys for 6 months (having a pink & black '56 Ford helped) and folks like you who "interact" daily are viewed with mild amusement and contempt.

You don't "get it" and never will for reasons I couldn't begin to explain. You're an outsider, no matter how much "interaction" you have. So was I, but at least I knew it and didn't try to be some hypocritical (what was your phrase? Oh yeah) "know-it-all idiots" like yourself.

Try being the only white guy at a black wedding, or a holy roller-speaking-in-tongues-hallelujah-folks-rolling-on-the-floor church service, or smoking some opium with a bunch of Iranians, or partying with a bunch of Algerians in Paris.

Your cultural ignorance is consistent with your overall lack of anything credible to say.

You dont know anything about me

and you assume things about others. It seems that by your story that I have had much more cultural interaction than you. Hell, my whole neighborhood has. Your story is common.

Sure

don't forget your spiderman costume when you're out interacting.
