Sarah Palin is Bad for Women
Like many today I watched in semi-awe as Alaska Governor Sarah Palin graciously accepted the position of John McCain’s running mate.
Television pundits explained why the Palin “package” is so compelling to conservatives. Palin is a (very) junior Republican who has already earned herself an excellent reputation for fighting corruption, as well as an 80+% approval rating as Alaska’s governor. At 44, she is the mother of 5 children, the oldest of whom recently enlisted and will soon be deployed to Iraq. She is a lifelong NRA member, a hunter, a high school basketball champion, and a former runner up for Miss Alaska. She is vehemently pro-domestic drilling — including in ANWR — and as one pundit suggested, possesses a “keen sense of the geopolitics of energy.” Palin’s background is thoroughly middle-class, and her high-school sweetheart husband is a lifelong union member.
There can be no doubt that Palin’s selection is purely tactical — a decision based more on image and balance than on substance and qualifications. Palin’s youth, beauty, and distance from Washington were all chosen because they directly counter shortcomings of McCain. Her indisputable conservatism in areas where McCain has appeared moderate — abortion, the Second Amendment, drilling — as well as her “strength” in domestic issues, balances nicely with McCain’s flip-flopping war-focused campaign.
Perhaps most importantly, Palin’s nomination and election would be hailed as breaking down barriers. Indeed, today’s “it turns out the women of America aren’t finished” speech made clear that Palin’s job on this ticket is to recruit as many former Hillary supporters as possible.
But what was disturbing today was how clear it became that Palin’s job is not only to recruit women, but to simultaneously promote conservative notions of how women should be.
Palin is in many ways the perfect “family woman.” She has given birth to five children, and (even today, while standing next to her new running mate) publicly honors her husband as the man in this world she admires most. Putting herself in contrast to Hillary Clinton and even Michelle Obama, Palin identifies herself first as a “hockey mom” who never had any ambitions to enter professional politics. Arguably the two most important appeals of her candidacy involve her sons: Due to her oldest son’s enlistment she is soon to become the most high profile Iraq mom since Cindy Sheehan. And last year when she learned she was carrying a baby with Downs Syndrome, she elected not to have an abortion — a move that crystallized her endorsement by the Christian Coalition. Moreover, after her son’s birth this April, Palin returned to work three days later without requesting maternity leave.
For all these reasons, Palin’s selection as McCain’s VP is offensive, not only because there are far more experienced women out there who perhaps don’t “look” as good, but because her personal choices as a woman — as a wife and as a mother — are about to be scrutinized and politicized in a way that can only hurt women.
Palin’s pro-life stance combined with her personal history subtly reinforces the idea that there is no acceptable excuse for terminating a pregnancy — that education, healthcare, employment flexibility, and the presence of a reliable spouse or partner are incidental in the decision to have children, and anyway, are available to those who work for them. More specifically, it sends a message to women that if they become pregnant they should have the baby — regardless of whether they already have 4 children, regardless of whether they have a career they’d like to advance, and regardless of whether they know their baby will have Downs syndrome.
Similarly, Palin’s selection sends a disingenuous and alarming message to American mothers — that even if it puts their son or daughter in mortal, daily danger there is no reason not to support the war in Iraq; that gun control is unnecessary; and that this country makes it easy for women with five children (including a five month old) to have a successful career and even, say, run for Vice President.
I have zero doubt that Sarah Palin is an intelligent, capable woman who is truly dedicated to reforming government and eliminating corruption. I also have zero doubt that she lives the life she chooses — that there is strength and independence in her convictions on abortion, guns, and energy, that she really does see politics as public service, and that she truly loves and admires her husband and every one of her children without concern for how it makes her look.
But her profound lack of national experience serves as glaring evidence that she has not been selected for her qualifications, her courage, or her brain, but for the personal choices she has made for her family and for herself as a woman. Quite frankly, conservatives have rewarded a woman politically for deciding to keep a baby and for sending her son to Iraq. For this reason, Palin’s selection is a great disservice to women — and further evidence of how truly destructive a Republican victory will be for American women.

By richaduAugust 29, 2008 - 9:24pmMcCain Taps Palin of Alaska after First 37 Choices Turn Him Down
In recent news from www.funniestbloginamerica.blogspot.com :
Republican presumptive Presidential candidate John McCain today told a hastily assembled St. Paul, Minnesota news conference that his 38th choice for the Vice Presidency, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, "enthusiastically" accepted his invitation to join the Republican ticket.
"It got a little embarrassing there," Sen. McCain admitted. "For a while, I was like, gosh, doesn't anybody want to be Vice President in this country, or what?"
Sen. McCain's first 37 choices all rejected the offer "in seconds, because none of them thought I could beat Obama," a red-faced McCain acknowledged. "They all thought, why risk being blamed? They wanted to preserve their chances for 2012."
Among the 37 Republicans and others who declined Sen. McCain's offer of a spot on the ticket were former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Connecticut Senator Joe Leiberman, former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre, TV chef Emeril, recording artist 50 Cent, former New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath, actress Liv Tyler, Barney the Dinosaur, John McCain's wife Cindy, an unnamed bartender at Sky Harbor Airport Terminal C in Phoenix, New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and the surviving members of the cast of 1960s TV sitcom Gilligan's Island.
"I know Vice President isn't a glamorous job," Sen. McCain admitted. "You mostly go to funerals of foreign leaders, unless you're inventing the Internet like Al Gore or running America like Dick Cheney. But the job is frankly what you make of it, and I would have thought I could find someone who had some sort of stature or name recognition or even came from a state where there are more electoral votes than caribou.
"But beggars can't be choosers, so I'm really glad Governor, um, what's her name, from Alaska, has graciously agreed to join me on the ticket."

sarah was chosen to bring in the die hard conservatives back into the mccain fold, and guess what?, it is going to work, all of those conservs that were going to sit this election out cause mccain is not conservative enough are now licking their chops. she was the worst vp choice for us "demos" mccain could had chosen, had he chosen anybody else their ticket would had been labeled the "same old boys network" and been easily defeated, now the election is up for grabs and we better not simply dismiss her, she has been a mayor and a governor and thus she is more qualified to be president than obama is and that is the ugly truth.

You are another "concern troll."
Her stint as mayor of a village--a part-time job at best--maybe qualifies her to run for county commissioner.
Her two years as governor of a state with less than a million people is "more experience" than four years as a state senator and four as a US senator, one who has dealt with international issues? That is such a laugh.

I must disagree. I think one of the greatest services Palin provides is to knock out of the park the historical prejudice that an attractive woman must be fluff - that a mom can't be as strong and forceful as "one of the guys". Not only did she carry to term a Down's syndrome baby (thus personalizing her pro-life stance in a powerful way - whether or not you agree with her, this is integrity when it hurts), she took on the corrupt reeper establishment, big oil, and WON. Can you name me a single politician in America who has an 80% approval rating with their constituents?
And the lack of experience thing just doesn't cut it - a governor is not only a chief executive overseeing thousands of employees and running a multi-multi million dollar budget, a governor is also the commander-in-chief of the National Guard.
Look at it this way - who do you think would have done a better job of running the country for the past 8 years - Bush or Palin?
She is currently in the process of kicking out big oil from leases that they have not developed quickly enough - a position many on this board have been (rightly) criticising Bushco for not doing.
I don't know how she's going to hold up over the next several weeks, but I would not discount any person, especially a woman, who has taken on corrupt politicians in her own party as well as big oil and won. Keep in mind her husband is a union guy, iditerod winner, commercial fisherman, and part eskimo - got to tell ya, she beats the pants off of Romney, Schmuckabee and all of those other reeper BAU politicians.

McCain's entire career in the Senate is one scandal after another.
His personal life is one of excess and lies.

Ms. Palin seems like a good person, although misguided. But a journalism major with NO foreign policy experience? Yes, Obama is weak in this area too, (although not THAT weak and he has the pragmatic intelligence and education to make the tough decisions). What is SCARY is that if McCain should drop dead from a heart attack (or some other natural cause likely for a 71 year old man), Palin then becomes commander-in-chief! If the same happens to Obama, Biden is more than qualified to take the lead. But, you are right, Palin is probably the best choice McCain could make. It's obvious he is hoping to pick up some disgruntled Hillary supporters. The talk of postponing the RNC was also obvious - after seeing how positive the DNC was, the GOP needs to regroup because their convention was planned around negative attacks. Now if they go negative, they will just look like a bunch of pathetic losers!

By bill-clinton69August 30, 2008 - 12:55pmMcCain & Palin Need To Be Asked By:
a reporter or moderator at the debates the following so they can be put on the record
Question to John McCain: If your wife or daughter were raped by a stranger or family member & became so traumatized that they hid the fact they had been raped & later learned they were pregnant by their rapist, would you encourage your wife/daughter to have the baby of their rapist or abort it ?
Question to Sarah Pailin: If your daughter or you were raped by a stranger or family member & became so traumatized & hid the fact they had been raped & later learned they were pregnant by their rapist, would you encourage /daughter or (you if you were the victim) to have the baby of their rapist or abort it ?
McCain & Pailin need to be asked this so they can be put on record. Women have the right to know this so they can make up their minds to the consequences to choosing 2 people that would support putting judges on the courts that would overturn Rowe vs Wade.
I hope all the nuts that joined PUMA ( Party Unity My Ass ) realize a vote for McCain means they would appoint right wing nutjobs to our courts & set this country back decades of progress.
McCain & Pailn would continue the policies of Bush43 nominating radicals like Alito, Scalia, Thomas & Roberts. If you think The USSC sucks now.... let McCain win the presidency.
The only real problem I have with Obama, his surrogates have said he will not order The Justice Dept if elected president to investigate Bush43 & his staff for crimes. That sucks, because if you or I committed crimes, we'd have to face the music. The rule of law should apply to all. Bush & his cronies should face the music just like any other citizen if they broke the law.
Im votiing OBAMA/BIDEN . Voting McCain/Pailin means you want 4 more years of the same failures Bush43 gave you.

By bettys12August 30, 2008 - 4:12pmThere were plenty of
There were plenty of Republican women far more qualified than Palin. The problem with them is that they aren't pretty.
This is the same mentality that puts brainless bimbos in the FOX newsroom, hoping that the males will turn off their brains (as a Russian study showed they do when watching pretty female broadcasters) and that the females will feel that they have made huge strides because there is a woman.
It is insulting to both men and women that McCain couldn't come up with a more intelligent, more talented and more qualified woman for the number two slot. But they are counting on the sheeple responding to the post-hypnotic suggestion "gays, guns and abortions" and not think. They are counting on the reptilian brain response, instead of logical thinking.
I'm not so sure they are wrong when I read the talking points being repeated by the trolls here.

By MichtouAugust 30, 2008 - 5:45pmSarah Palin
At the beginning of the McCain/Palin press conference, introducing the new Republican VP candidate, I was intrigued. That is until Palin presented her family. From that moment on, I couldn't take my eyes off Palin's teenage daughter in the background, holding her little brother, an infant with Down Syndrome. All I could think was: who is going to take care of this baby? Can he be on the road for two months without compromising his health? How much time will she be able to devote to him during these fundamental months of his life? Is Todd going to do it? That’d be good, but is he? Of course, I’m apprehensive to say, "hey, get back in the house and raise that kid. What the hell are you thinking?" But... well... what the hell is she thinking? Barrack told us in a speech that the only way he and Michelle could justify the demands of campaigning for this office was because their kids would be cared for by their grandmother. Palin told us nothing. We're simply supposed to be proud that she chose to have a Down Syndrome baby rather than abort it. Well, I'm not… not since she can't possibly spend much time with this poor child given the demands of the job she is currently seeking.
I suppose I’m the type of voter McCain hopes to attract. I’m a stay-at-home mom, living in Pasadena, CA, registered as a nonpartisan voter. Initially I supported Hillary, due to her experience and tenacity, and I consider myself a pretty staunch feminist, having carried the flag for women in the workplace throughout the '80s, becoming a vice president before leaving to become a full-time mom and volunteer fundraiser. At first I struggled with how to responsibly raise Collin while not totally losing myself in him. The balance was far harder than I ever imagined. Not for Palin, however. She went back to work three days after giving birth.
Overall... duty before self... sure... but not civic duty before parental responsibility to infants we choose to bring into the world. In the end, this affects us all and says something about how we collectively define responsibility and judgment.
So, no, I won't be voting for McCain/Palin merely because there is a female on the ticket. I like that she's spunky and can rally a crowd, but more importantly, she is against a woman's right to choose, against teaching evolution in our schools and is some big hunter of sorts -- against gun control. Yikes! I'm encouraging everyone I know to vote for Obama/Biden.

McCain's ridiculous choice for V.P. proves HIS unsuitability for office. Besides being a petulant response to his advisors nixing Lieberman & Pawlenty, he chose her, I'm sure, mostly because he thought he'd look like such a stud with Cindy on one side and Sarah on the other. Hmmmboy, two pretty wimmen think he's swell--Let's all vote for him!! Good gravy. Next we'll choose our president by throwing all our names into a hat and see whose comes out. That way at least we'd be likely to get candidates with more experience than being the new governor of half a doz. people. But, with his choice, McCain locked up the hypocrite vote and has a firm grip on all three of Alaska's electoral votes. woohoo.
Now, let's all get on with the contest of which Republican gets the best photo op that pretends to show how they give a rat's patootie about displaced poor/black people. It's too bad that the hurricane will get the blame for their convention being a dud. I wanted credit where credit is due.

Glad this is somewhere to TALK about current issues. I think most people on here have it right, John McCain only picked this women out of desperation. She has no Foreign Policy experience AT ALL. I can't believe that people actually have positive (or anything) stories to say about her. No one even knows who she is. I laugh everytime I think about her debating Biden. That is fine that she had a child with Downs Syndrome but It seems that her whole story is suppose to have us falling in love with her, I work at a special education school and I really hope she isn't exploiting her own infant son for political gain. That just really isn't fair for the baby to be used as a ploy. Its sick. One final thought... By davids525August 31, 2008 - 7:41pmAn ob/gyn comments on Palin pregnancy
SARAH PALIN’S BIG LIE
An OB/GYN examines the Palin pregnancies
By Jennefer Russo, M.D.
First, let’s get one thing straight. I agree with Barack Obama that a politician’s family life should be off limits to the press and to criticism. But if that politician has put her children in the public eye and used them as an example of how American families should be modeled, I think she has permitted us to discuss them when they stray from her example.
Sarah Palin has stated in the past that she would oppose abortion for her daughter, even if she had been raped. A daunting statement, given that in her home state of Alaska the rate of rape is over twice the national average and the rate of child sexual abuse is six times the national average. Now her daughter is supposedly five months pregnant and going to “keep her child”, which I assume means that she is not going to give that child up for adoption.
Some statistics:
• By age 19, 70% of teens have engaged in sexual intercourse
• The annual pregnancy rate is approximately 8 percent among women aged 15 to 19
• Nearly a third of these pregnancies end in abortion, but almost 60 percent result in a live birth.
(Source: The Alan Guttmacher Institute, “Facts on American Teens’ Sexual and Reproductive Health”, 09/2006.)
Sarah Palin supports abstinence-only education, which has been demonstrated to be harmful to young people, depriving them of the information they need to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Per Planned Parenthood:
“The teen pregnancy rate in the United States is more than twice that of many European countries that advocate comprehensive sex education and accessible contraceptive services. Despite that grim reality, more and more money is allocated each year for irresponsible, misleading abstinence-only programs. The Bush Administration has been a vocal advocate of expanding abstinence-only programs, which teach that abstinence is the only acceptable behavior for adolescents, leaving out vital information that includes discussions on contraception, safe sex practices, sexual orientation and abortion. Though studies show more than half of teenagers between the ages of 15-19 are sexually active (Moore, Driscoll and Lindberg, A Statistical Portrait of Adolescent Sex, Contraception and Childbearing, 1998), more than $100 million is spent by the federal government in programs that censor information about safe-sex practices.”
Bristol Palin, the daughter of a woman who opposes abortion and sex education, is now the prime example of the result of these attitudes. A pregnant, unmarried 17-year-old who is likely still in high school is now going to be forced into motherhood as a result of the ignorance of her own mother. A girl who missed 8 months of high school last year because she had mono. Apparently the Palin’s have a high regard for education.
There is speculation that the new pregnancy may be a cover-up for Bristol’s previous delivery of Sarah Palin’s child, Trig, who was born in April. As an obstetrician/gynecologist, I would like to speak to those rumors. Sarah Palin’s story, and the media’s story, is that she delivered this child at 8 months after breaking her bag of water during a public event. The rumors state that Palin broke her bag of water, gave a speech a half-hour later, and then took a plane from Texas to Alaska to deliver the baby. This scenario is nearly impossible. Sarah Palin has had four previous babies. In my experience of delivering thousands of babies, I would predict that Sarah Palin would deliver within a couple of hours. She would likely have had rapid labor and delivered her baby during the speech or delivered the baby on the plane.
On the other hand, if her story is somehow true, it implies a total disregard to the life of her baby. Almost every woman, except for maybe one addicted to drugs, understands that she will soon deliver when her water breaks. When she has had four other babies, she understands the speed of her own labor. She would likely be starting to have contractions during that speech. If she had indeed not gone into labor, she could have developed a severe infection, or the baby’s umbilical cord could have prolapsed, leading to decreased oxygen flow to the baby. If she had delivered in the plane, she would have been delivering a premature baby with Down’s syndrome (which involves a higher risk of cardiac defects) without the assistance of emergency medical personnel. The baby therefore had a high risk of death, which Palin definitely would have known.
From my experience as an obstetrician, I have a very hard time believing this story. Either the story about her labor and delivery is a lie, or Sarah Palin is a dangerously negligent mother. So which is it? What are they up to? In saying that her daughter, Bristol, is now five months pregnant, they seem to be trying to cover up the parenthood of the previous child. There will be nothing to cover up when the baby is born “late” because her daughter is really only currently three months pregnant, unless they induce delivery of a premature infant to perpetuate the ruse.
This disaster should finally expose the doublespeak of the Republican political machine. Again, I would generally agree with Senator Obama that private life is off limits in political life. But not when the candidates presume to dictate American citizen’s personal life with their own beliefs. Then their hypocrisy is fair game.

By Obgyn1September 1, 2008 - 3:56pmThank you, Doctor Russo.
I'm sure everyone here appreciates getting an expert opinion.
It's pretty obvious, even to a knowledgable layman, that there is something very VERY wrong with this story.
As to what is fair game. I agree that it is not the deed, but the hypocrisy that is an issue. I couldn't care less about her daughter's personal life... BUT I DO CARE THAT A V.P. CANDIDATE IS A HYPOCRITICAL LIAR WILLING TO USE HER OFFICE ILLEGALLY TO PUNISH PERSONAL ENEMIES.
Further, I'm guessing that as a physician, you are as concerned as I am that this woman is another "flat-earther" who rejects science. I can't imagine putting this nation into the hands of someone who doesn't believe in evolution... it's medieval.
P.S. Folks, When I saw the unusual spelling of Doctor Russo's first name, I suspected an internet hoax, but nope. There is indeed a practicing OB-GYN with that name.

There are indeed some very dubious individuals trolling the internets as Doctors these days.

By Dr_BillionaireSeptember 1, 2008 - 6:33pmNot sure that was a good move, Dr. Russo
How about the fact that sometime things happen as a part of God's plan. Imagine that. I find it compelling that so many of you think that you should have a right to decide to keep an unborn baby or KILL an unborn baby-whether you were raped or not! What about their right to live? YOU take away their choice and that is okay?!? Wow. As far as sex education...hmmm...I wonder if the enacting of that is what has created the mass problems now? How about teaching your children that sex is a God given act for a married man and woman...not children and teens. Or no...I guess you think it is better to give them the tools they need to do it, so they won't get pregnant or get STD's. Wow, again. I think that Palin has a pretty good tract record with her children of the Christian ideals and morals that she has raised her children to follow. Try keeping in mind...while we think we can control every aspect of our lives...or others, we can't. We are called to obey the Word, follow the path that God intended for us and to teach and train our children in the way that they should go (don't see that teaching them the proper way to have sex is part of that plan in the Bible). Not sure you would be the doctor of my choice.

By justanotherpersonSeptember 5, 2008 - 2:25pmSorry... I believe in a DIFFERENT religion.
I don't believe in any of that nonsense.
Luckily, our First Amendment says you can't force your religious views on me... But look at the bright side. I can't FORCE anyone to have an abortion either.
Isn't this a great country?,
