Clinton and Biden: topline thoughts

By The Seminal

I’ll admit it, I sold President Clinton a little short today.

When asked about my thoughts (biases, really) going in to the Wednesday night speech, I wrote this:

The Dem Party of Bill Clinton circa 1992,3,4,5,6 is not the Dem Party of BHO 2008. The Big Dawg may not love that, may even be bitter (imo) that he is not being given more credit (earned or not) for what he “accomplished” in the 90s, but both Clintons know that what is best for them is what’s best for the Democratic Party this cycle–and that is the election of Obama-Biden this November.

Bill might not give the best speech of his career, but he will embrace BHO in word and spirit–at least for public consumption.

But Bill Clinton exceeded my expectations by a goodly amount. First, Clinton wholly embraced the Obama candidacy, with lots of full-throated “I support Barack Obama,” “Barack Obama is the man for this job,” and “Barack Obama is ready to be the president of the United States.”

Clinton neglected—wisely—to say that Obama would be ready on “day one.”

My favorite lines from the Big Dawg’s speech (transcribed from scratch-pad notes):

Barack Obama knows the world will be more impressed with the power of our example than the examples of our power.

and

America can do better, and Barack Obama will do better.

Joe Biden met my expectations, but maybe just barely.

I have often thought of Biden as an informed speaker, but not so much a great orator (I don’t think I am alone here). Tonight’s speech basically confirmed that belief. It had the “red meat” that every anchor and pundit told us that this speech must contain, but it didn’t soar rhetorically. It was a little long, and peppered with those much too over-used call and repetition lines, which have mostly failed (as they did here) ever since Al Gore trotted out “It’s time for him to go” back in 1992.

Joe Biden’s best moment—and, again, I am sure I am not alone here—was his “Freudian slip,” accidentally calling John McCain “George.”

Biden—along with so many at this convention—stressed that John McCain just represents a continuation of the failed Bush Administration. Polls show that this argument tracks very well with voters. In this case, I am happy that the Dems are poll-driven.

The RNC Convention - Opening & Closing Acts

Larry Craig will open the convention in Minnesota by "Toe Tapping" in a bathroom stall, while Joe Lieberman does his best to impersonate Zell Miller.

The convention will close with Rudy Guiliani dressing up as Marilyn Monroe & singing Happy Birthday Mr. President McCain, while Bush plays air guitar.

I only hope McCain won't fall asleep from all the excitement. This might a bit too much for the old fellow.

I will be there...

Selling copies of " A Guide To Getting Deferments" to the college republican chickenhawks. Just in case Gramps McCain wins and re- instates the draft.

What I heard.

I understand the GOP is planning some colorful, gala demonstrations.

I'm looking forward to the scheduled "Perp-Walk March of the Indicted" preceeded by a short video entitled "Taxes are for the Little People" (directed by Bruce Willis!).

And let's not forget...

Toby Keith and Pantera duetting on "Let's Round Up Them Libs And Kill 'em All For Jesus."

You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.
---Ray Bradbury

A little Marxist entrepreneurship?

Why not? Call it "Redistribution of Wealth!" :D

You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.
---Ray Bradbury

Bet I could sell them for $100.00 a pop.

All proceeds donated to the Young Republican Recovery Center.
" Because a mind is a terrible thing to taste."

Yeah, Bill still has it, big time.

Many have wondered, including myself, if the most estute politician in memory had lost his political "spidey-sense", his ability to read the political mood and shape a message that cuts through the noise and goes right to the heart in a way that average folks can understand.

BILL IS BACK!

=======================

"[McCain] still embraces the extreme philosophy which has defined his party for more than 25 years, a philosophy we never had a real chance to see in action until 2001, when the Republicans finally gained control of both the White House and Congress. Then we saw what would happen to America if the policies they had talked about for decades were implemented.

They took us from record surpluses to an exploding national debt; from over 22 million new jobs down to 5 million; from an increase in working family incomes of $7,500 to a decline of more than $2,000; from almost 8 million Americans moving out of poverty to more than 5 and a half million falling into poverty - and millions more losing their health insurance".

"Barack Obama knows that America cannot be strong abroad unless we are strong at home".

"Barack Obama also will not allow the world's problems to obscure its opportunities."

YUP!... BILL'S STILL GOT IT.

By A G August 28, 2008 - 9:15am

That was probably one of my favorite parts of the speech. I was glad to see that he took the time to point out to Americans the full extent of damage caused when rightwing ideology gains control of the levers of our government. His indictment of it should go a ways toward seeing to it that such rightwing extremism does not surface again in American politics for some time to come, if not for good.

This election isn't just about putting Obama in the Oval Office.
It's also partially about exterminating, once and for all, the ideology of extreme rightwing Republicanism.

And, apparently, a large chunk of the Republican Party planning their own convention agrees.

Oh, before I forget...

Fucking hilarious.

I watched Fox News right after the Biden speech... I have never ever seen those propogandists at a loss for words. But Fred "Beetle" Barnes WAS SPEECHLESS... ABSOLUTELY APOPLECTIC!

He fumbled and stumbled and fumfered, struggling to come up with an effective attack but came off like he had just been lobotomized!... HILARIOUS!

Then the attack-babe gets on and says something profound that amounted to "Well.. Well... Obama is a big doody-head!!"... Morton Condracki plays clean-up with a panicked "But, but, but... THE SURGE! THE SURGE!"

It was PATHETIC.

Man oh man, they do NOT want to talk about issues. It's all personal attacks and smear... IT'S ALL THEY'VE GOT!

I was proud of Billy! He stepped up to the plate and hit

a grand slam!

I agree with A G and SJI - the moment Clinton started on the laundry list of the last disastrous eight years, I said, "Finally! Beating the Repugs over the head with the LONG list of failures!"

And, I disagree with some of the pundit's out there ... I thought Biden's speech was all Joe. Yes, he was a bit constrained in his fieriness, I think he drove his points home very well. IMO, it was just a preview of what's to come from him once he hits the campaign trail. I suspect Biden won't hold back once on the road. Plus, I LOVE how he tied Darth into it ... subtle but no so subtle that the message got lost.

"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."
George Carlin

BARF BAGS AT DOOR!!!!

.
Bill Clinton almost played hardball but didn’t. A laundry list is still only a little dirty laundry.

Joe Biden absolutely didn’t play hardball.

This was the worst convention in history.

Let me explain something. People want to feel safe. Even though we KNOW the Republicans have made us less safe, devastated our Armed Forces, bankrupted our economy, still, they come out fighting. People respect that.

If I hear “resonate” once more, I am going to puke. We don’t need to hear “kum by ya” and “let’s open the window to the bright and shiny light that is tomorrow’s day”.

We need to hit the Republicans.

DICK CHENEY WAS NOT MENTIONED ONCE.

GUANTANAMO TORTURE WAS NOT MENTIONED ONCE.

I heard Katrina mentioned only once and as part of Bill's laundry list of words.

I NEVER HEARD WALTER RIED MENTIONED ONCE.

I NEVER HEARD THAT WE WERE MISLED INTO IRAQ.

I NEVER HEARD THAT IT’S A CRIME THAT WE HAVEN’T CAUGHT BIN LADIN.

When I say mentioned, I mean blasted. "Republicans have devestated this country and lied us into a war. They don't take care of our soldiers. They didn't give them the proper equipment, look at Walter Ried". Now, that is a good place to start. Only, guess what? It's too fucking late. The convention is nearly over.

Instead, there is all this fucking “reaching out” and “let’s heal the wounds”. Barf! Republicans have greatly damaged this country. Fuck "reaching out". THROW THEM OUT OF OFFICE. VOTE THEM OUT.

When the Republicans start next week, they will brand Obama a Sunni Terrorists on the side of those that took out the WTC. They will tie him to Wright and Rezko. And they will be playing hardball.

None of this soft stuff the Democrats have been peddling. And then, once again, it will be Obama standing there, lip quivering, stern face, "Stop talking bad about my patriotism. Wah Wah Wah".

This convention was so soft and so retarded; the Democrats may not be able to recover.

If you think Obama is going to give a hard-hitting speech tonight, forget it. It will be another of those puke filled, “We are the World” speeches.

We are going to have four years of McCain. And then Hillary will get another shot. Believe me, I am most definitely NOT a Hillary supporter, but at least she knows how to play hardball.

This convention has left me terribly sad that Democrats, with all their ideals could be so weak and spineless.

YOU HAVE TO HIT THE REPUBLICANS HARD. HAVEN'T THE LAST EIGHT YEARS TAUGHT YOU ANYTHING????????????????????????????????

You must be fucking deaf. Just because you didn't hear it doesn't mean it wasn't said.

What the last 8 years have taught.

actually it's the last 38.
A great leader cannot necessarily get re-elected.
Allowing the redefinition of words will get you burned.
Hoping that talking @ a CANDIDATES flaws will still allow him/her to get elected.
They'll love us when we win! Meaning the MSM. They are just bean counters in the end and if the left (doesn't matter if it's far left enough for you!) is in power they will, as long as it benefits the bottom line, play nice.
And by GOD if we continue down your road dread
WE will lose!
We the people
This is what happened in 2000
This is what happened in 2004

Bill's best line of the night----

"People of the world most admire us when they see the power of our example, not the example of our power".

That's a piece of wisdom that the neocons forgot long ago, if they ever knew it to begin with. It harks back to a Henry Kissinger line to the effec that you can use force to conquer, but it can't bring legitimacy. I'll have to look that up tonight, because it is also very true, and indicates why we are in the mess we are in today after 7 years of neocon bungling and bombing.

Absolutely

And my personal favorite

"Anything good, you don’t have to force on people. They will steal it."

Dick Gregory, speech delivered at Univ. of Alabama, 1969

I wouldn't be too quick to quote Kissinger.

He's a war criminal if there ever was one.

Quite true, but even Henry the K can occasionally come up

with nuggets of wisdom, when he's not busy figuring out new ways to devastate a nation.

Bill Clinton & The King

The Democratic Party is not Obama's yet. He has yet to be tested to prove himself. The argument that he is inexperienced is completely foolish. Experience comes with opportunity to serve. Not one president ever had experience at running the country until they were elected & had opportunity. We must elect Obama & give him that chance. We can not afford 4 more years of a republican.

Last night, President Clinton took to the stage to a thunderous round of a standing ovation. It was magic. It was like Elvis walking on stage to the cheers of his loyal court. Bill Clinton is " The King" of The Democratic Party. It's his party to rule & only he can release it to the new generation.

Before President Clinton took the stage, you heard a partial list of his accomplishments. He resided over the greatest period of peace & prosperity in U S history. He inherited 7.5% unemployment in 1993 & ended up watching unemployment drop to 4.2 % by the time he left office. Over 22 million new jobs, record number of new home owners, a DOW that soared from 3,300 in 1993 to 10,700 when he left office January 2001.

Bill Clinton is without a doubt the most successful president of our era & it sucks for republicans they have an imbecile like G. W Bush. I would bet Rupert Murdoch & the simpletons at Fox Noise absolutely had diarrhea as Clinton took the stage, scored a touchdown with a great speech then spiked the ball. It was great !

Now it is up to us. President Clinton & Hillary told you what we must do. We must make sure we encourage our neighbors, friends, relatives & even strangers to register to vote, get proper ID cards & vote to give Obama the opportunity to move this country into a new direction from the miserable failures of GW Bush & the corrupt GOP led congress that put us in massive debt the first 6 years of The Bush presidency.

We must get out of Iraq completely & quit wasting 12 billion dollars a month there, while Americans at home struggle to get by. We must take care of our own at home first as President Clinton said. We must make sure every soldier sent off to the war in Iraq on the lies of The Bush administration aretaken care of when they return home.

As president, Obama should have The Justice Dept investigate Bush43 & his staff for crimes & he must prosecute them for crimes along with the telecom companies that broke the law. We must prosecute war criminals like "Blackwater, Bush43, Cheney, Rumsfeld & others. In order for Obama to defend The Constitution & uphold the laws of the land, he must make good to prosecute those that broke the law, otherwise he know better than Bush43. We must restore the rule of law in order to regain our respect in the world.

President Obama must call for an investigation to what happened to almost 9 billion dollars Bush, Bremer, Cheney & Wolfowitz claimed was lost in Iraq. The democrats promised us in 2006 that they would do this & hold Bush accountable. Pelosi & Reid either need to get with the program or step aside & let someone else run the Congress. Dennis Kucinich was the only member of Congress that did his job under The U S Constitution to attempt to impeach Bush & Cheney for crimes.

Here's our chance. Let's not blow it. Let's get registered to vote, get the proper credentials & ID cards & challenge others to vote Obama as our next president. We can not afford to let this opportunity slip by or allow John McCain to further ruin this nation with the insane policies of G W Bush, the worst president in U S history & the most corrupt one too.

I have enjoyed the Convention

I have thoroghly enjoyed the speeches by Michelle, Hillary, Kerry, Bill, Biden. Those are the ones I heard anyway. Yes, I wouldn't mind some Repube bashing, but I can't have everything. Kerry has been the most aggressive. I find them all admirable people and I'm just trusting that their team of image consultants, ad experts and voter number crunchers know what they are doing to ensure an Obama victory.

there was some heavy duty bashing

but the MSM barely covered it.

check out the speeches by Kerry and Kucinich

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/26/kucinichs-democratic-conv_n_121...

Too bad Dennis was asked to drop one line though. Reportedly he wanted to say "we can't afford to give the republicans four more years, we can't afford to give them 8 more years, but as they leave office, we ought to give them 10 to 20." It would have been priceless.

I ended up switching to PBS when I saw that the MSM was more

intent on hearing themselves pontificate than televising the speakers. I guess they need to make sure that no talking head is left behind!

If they do not give the left

the same opportunity to comment on every stupid thing the repubs do next week, I WILL BE PISSED. Half the time I was left wondering what speech they saw because the one they were commenting on is not what went over the air.

I personally found it absolutely hilarious to hear dolts like

Bill Bennett trying to trash the dems while spinning how great the repubs are.

As far as allowing the left to comment on the repubs next week, who could they get? Most left-leaning voices have been shoved off the airwaves in the past 7 years, other than Keith and Rachel. CNN will use Begala and Carville, who are basically Clintonista centrists. CBS purged all the lefties with Rather, ABC is also home of Clintonistas like Stephanopoulos, and I'm not going to even mention Faux Noise, as they aren't even a news organization. The theme the MSM will push after this is brave, patriotic, experienced maverick McCain taking on the inexperienced, arrogant, tax and spend liberal, muslim Obama, (and expect them to "accidentally" call him Osama at least twice in those 4 days of the RNC). Expect them to totally ignore Ron Paul's counterconvention across the river in Minneapolis, because dissention among repubs is never to be reported; only dissention among dems can be talked about, or manufactured if not enough exists.

In other words, expect the MSM to continue to parrot the corporate line, i.e., the repub line.

who could they get?

Sad but true. Maybe Eleanor Clift too, but you're right there just is no list available.

My favorite idiot was Bill Krystol. Has he ever been right about anything?

The only thing Krystol has been right about is knowing the

right connections to get and keep jobs when he proves to be an utter failure at all he tries. Kinda like a certain idiot from Crawford, Texas.

I've been to Crawford

those people may be many things (ok so they are not really many things).....
but they certainly are not responsible for the shrub!
Personally I like to blame Kennebunkport.
