CNN: Ignoring the Facts for Decades
At about 8:35 eastern time this morning, CNN cut away to a commercial with a teaser for the next segment flatly asserting that Democrats have been “ignoring the faithful for decades”, asking whether they would be able to reach them this year.
In 1976, Americans elected their first born-again president–Jimmy Carter, a Democrat. The next Democratic president, Bill Clinton, could “quote scripture with the best of them. wove religion into many of his speeches, and turned to the evangelist Billy Graham for counsel. Al Gore and John Kerry each spoke about their faith in personal terms.
Perhaps CNN believes that Republicans have been more successful in mobilizing a segment of the faithful, though it is worth asking whether the Republicans have been ignoring people of faith who are not evangelical Christians for decades. And, of course, the accepted narrative may (incorrectly) mark Republicans as devout and Democrats as dirty hippy atheists. But it is simply factually incorrect for CNN to present, as received fact, the assertion that Democrats have been “ignoring the faithful” for decades. That is sloppy journalism, to say the least.

"Ignoring the faithful"
If by "ignoring the faithful" CNN means "refusing to participate in the Republican ploy of whispering sweet nothings in the ears of the faithful so as to garner their support to be used as a political voting bloc, only to provide for them nothing that was promised in those whispers", then I agree.

By SJerseyIndyAugust 26, 2008 - 8:50amAs I have been saying
for years and years now, that "Big Tent" that the republics claim to have is out in the back yard...way away for the big house and when the shit hits the fan, Women, Asians, African Americans, Spanish Speakers and every other "Minority" will bear the brunt of the storm while the fat white guys look out the back window (from inside the big house) and say, damn! I guess we need to find some new help.

By justintymeAugust 26, 2008 - 10:03amThe repub tent will get increasingly smaller if they don't
become more inclusive. Census Bureau data says that whites will be a minority in this country by the middle of this century. The white men that are the core of the repub party will be a much smaller part of the electorate, so unless the repub party makes a drastic change in direction, they will be populated out of political relevance in the not-too-distant future. They will also have to change their rich white guy-centric platforms and policies, or their irrelevance will be here even sooner.

By UffdaguyAugust 26, 2008 - 12:59pmOh, they will do what they did in the past, Uff.
Invite people into the white fold that were previously despised by them.
A classic example is what happened to the Irish in this country. They were depicted as sub- human simians in the press and treated as absolute garbage in the big cities of the North. Then, once another wave of immigrants came into the country the Irish were bestowed with " white" status while the new immigrants from Eastern Europe and black folks from the South began arriving to work in the factories and got tagged with " Other" status.
You are seeing the same process with Hispanics and East Asians.

By thaelmann37August 26, 2008 - 2:47pmAs long as they are capable of getting people to vote against
their own self-interest, they will survive. As soon as Americans stop basing their vote on 30-second smear commercials and 10-second sound bites filtered by the media, their game is over. That's why repubs will never, ever let go of their control of the media. Rather, I should say that corporate media will never let go of the repub party and its puppets.

By UffdaguyAugust 26, 2008 - 2:53pmThey provide fear and false hope
The Republicons and conservatives have been chipping away at Roe v. Wade for years. And then there was the multi-state, anti-gay legislation that was voted on in, I think, 2004.
Republicons promise just enough of a wedge issue to get elected. I don't blame the Republicons as much as the sheeple who continually fall for the scam. The Republicons are holding pro-life, pro-gun and anti-gay in one hand while they're holding anti-union, anti-health, anti-poor/pro-rich, anti-First Amendment, anti-Fourth Amendment, anti-Social Security, etc. in the other hand behind their back.
I don't want to call people who vote Republicon stupid, but what other adjective describes people who continually vote against their own best interests and the best interests of this country just because they're homophobic or don't like abortion or are just plain afraid? If you don't like abortion, don't have one! It's that simple. But don't project your narrow ideology on the rest of the people with a broad-minded attitude. Especially when you're going to thump your chest every time Chimpy wants to take us into a war. "Pro-War != Pro-Life" and it never will be.

They are motivated by fears that do not and have not ever touched their lives. They believe that the lawd will provide them w/the winning lottery ticket that will put them in the top 15%.

It appears to me that CNN nailed this one. For the last 20 years, the democrat party has basically consisted of the un-churched, the un-faithful,atheists, homos, and every manner of perverted freak this country has. So don't get your panties in a wad when you girls are called on this one.

By bebeholmesAugust 26, 2008 - 1:42pmI disagree. If you really
I disagree. If you really believe in Jesus and what he taught, there is no way on earth you could be a Republican.
If you think Jesus taught to hate the poor and not help others, to destroy the environment, and that you are rewarded for your deeds with money, you haven't read the Bible (or you think Satan's name is Jesus). But that is what Republicans believe.

By MichtouAugust 26, 2008 - 2:29pmThat is a very simplistic and inaccurate assessment
Freedom from born-again evangelical domination of the party is not the same as being "unchurched, un-faithful, atheists, homos, and every manner of perverted freak this country has". It simply means the dem party isn't controlled by far rightwing fundie christians that want to see the United States become a Christian theocracy, a Christian version of Iran and Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. Why don't the repubs get rid of the elephant as their symbol and adopt the burning cross instead? I'm sure the KKK would be happy to share.

By Pookie2112August 26, 2008 - 2:56pmWhat the hell are they talking about?!!
The Democrats have always allowed and nurtured various important religious faiths over the years that the Repubs have ignored...just look at some of them...
Black Liberation Theology
Polygamist Churches
Satanism
Scientology (just look at Hollywood)
Pedophilia (not a religion but a lifestyle soon to be protected by the 1st Amendment as soon as the Obama gets in)
The Church of Global Warming
Communism (not an "established" religion, but takes it's place)
Hope this is helpful.

By Pookie2112August 26, 2008 - 10:30amUpholding freedom from religion is different than ignoring
The ignorance is left to the Republicons. They are exceedingly ignorant every day.
I am religious but I don't believe for a fraction of a nanosecond that religion should dictate a society. Although, there are some witches I wouldn't mind stoning.
