Obama Advisors Talking T&;R

According to a report in Salon by Mark Benjamin, a brigade or so of Barack Obama's Army of Advisors has been discussing in some detail what to do about BushCo's legion of crimes. A war crimes trial? In America? Starring an ex-president and his Vader-ish Veep? Not bloody likely. The topic surfaced when Philadelphia Daily News columnist Will Bunch asked if he'd consider prosecuting BushCo "for establishing torture as American policy".
"If crimes have been committed, they should be investigated," he said. But he quickly added, "I would not want my first term consumed by what was perceived on the part of the Republicans as a partisan witch hunt, because I think we've got too many problems to solve."
(emphasis added)
Heaven forfend the possibility that Republican feelings might be hurt. There would all that lovely bi-partisanship go, down the drain. All the "healing"? It would be like lancing a boil and it would hurt like hell. Nothing very positive, optimistic, or unifying about that.
On the other hand, much to my pleasant surprise, BO's AofA's are seriously considering a sort of Truth & Reconciliation Commission (http://impeachment.wordpress.com/2008/06/10/why-a-truth-reconciliation-commission-is-better-than-impeachment/) for America like the one Mandela designed for South Africa when apartheid ended.
While they have not been asked to develop a formal recommendation for Obama on the question of criminal accountability for torture, those who are weighing the issue, a group that includes some of the 300 people the New York Times recently described as Obama's "mini State Department," are moving toward consensus on some key points. Specifically, don't hold your breath waiting for Dick Cheney to be frog-marched into federal court. Prosecution of any officials, if it were to occur, would probably not occur during Obama's first term. Instead, we may well see a congressionally empowered commission that would seek testimony from witnesses in search of the truth about what occurred. Though some witnesses might be offered immunity in exchange for testimony, the question of whether anybody would be prosecuted would be deferred to a later date -- meaning Obama's second term, if such is forthcoming.
While there are certainly participants in these discussions who believe that top-level administration officials deserve to be hauled before a judge, even the harshest critics of the current administration's torture policies don't think there will be an immediate effort by the next president to prosecute anyone from the Bush administration. "I don't sense the political appetite for it," said Tom Malinowski, Washington advocacy director at Human Rights Watch, who is involved in the informal discussions about what Obama could do about investigating torture. "I don't think the next president will do that no matter who he is."
No, I imagine John McCain probaby wouldn't investigate BushCo for putting in place an (unConstitutional) policy that he supports and has every intention of continuing despite his opersonal experience with it.
But the fact that a Band of Brothers is even willing to seriously discuss it is hopeful if hardly sufficient. Will we see a T&RC in our lifetime? Maybe, but the focus on torture is, legally, probably the weakest point on which to concentrate an inquiry. The bigger, more significant and more Constitutionally profound questions are those of beginning a patently illegal war and illegally spying on American citizens for years, then lying about it to Congress (lying to Congress, after all, was the excuse they used to to impeach Clinton, so even Republicans would be forced to admit it was legitimate grounds since they had used the same grounds).
In any case, once a T&RC was launched and "things" started coming out, it would be near impossible to restrict the scope of the investigation, and it is the investigation, frankly, that's important.
The nonpartisan presidential commission that [Washington advocacy director at Human Rights Watch Tom] Malinowski and other people involved in the discussions are advocating would have considerable power, granted by Congress, to force cooperation. The commission would ultimately deliver recommendations to the president that would include, among other things, whether or not Cheney deserves that walk up the courthouse steps.
The first order of business, however, would be learning the truth. "I think a lot of us feel that the American people are entitled to the whole truth," said another person who knows about the discussions. "The American people are entitled to [an investigation] from an official body that has access to the classified documents that makes as much public as it can," that person added.
The commission would focus strictly on detention, torture and extraordinary rendition, or the practice of spiriting detainees to a third country for abusive interrogations. The panel would focus strictly on these abuses, leaving out any other allegedly illegal activities during the Bush administration, such as domestic spying.
(emphasis added)
If - and it's a BIG If - Obama goes for this, he will have gone a long way toward "healing the breach in his own party, and shouldn't that come first?

You know
If victory looks to be clearly Obama's in November and there starts to be open talk of investigations into the crimes of the Bush administration, well it might push the republicans to fix the elections in such a blatant manner that it is clearly obvious and we see a real battle to expose that fraud. Will McCain want that investigation tied to investigations of what went on during Bush's regime? I think he will walk away from that.

Patience, Pappy, patience. I'm a firm believer in that every dog has its day and I'm confident that, one way or another, Dumbya will get his in due time. I just hope the orange jumpsuit doesn't clash with his skin tone. Boy, wouldn't THAT be a major fashion faux pas!
As far as 'fixed' elections ... seems like Blackwell and the CEO of Diebold have direct knowledge of this, which I'm sure will play out in due time - again, practice patience, Pappy. These two tools will go the way of Dumbya, too and will enjoy the services of 'Club Fed'.

Obama needs to keep his focus on this campaign. IF he becomes president, then he can review this situation. It's not just Bush. Bush people have infected every level of government. Some examples are blatant, such as the DOJ or the number of scientists who have quit because this administration pressured them to change their data to match admin policy.
Obama has to be careful. Some policies are so retarded and damaging that some feel no sane person could possibly accept them.
A "perfect" example. It was reported that the total number of Arabic translators kicked out for being gay has topped 300.
The Bush administration is so desperate for Arabic translators, it is offering a bonus of 150 THOUSAND dollars. That means the US has thrown away 45 MILLION dollars because the Administration is more afraid of gays than Islamic terrorists. Never mind that sons and daughters, mothers and fathers are in Iraq and it's possible that many of those that died could have been save by a translator who has been kicked out because of who they love.
If Obama brought this up, corn fed Republicans are so afraid of gays, they would rather accept whatever happened than expose their children to gays. At least their children are in heaven. The ones with brain damage or who've lost two or three limbs will be spared the devastation that a "gay" might "see" them and "like" them.
You can't reason with these people. You just have to let it go.
Going after Bush at this time could rally people behind Bush. Obama needs to keep his focus on McCain.
McCain's support of the troops has been disgraceful. McCain is a veteran himself and his record is so pitiful. McShame, McShame, McShame. Obama needs to go after this one issue more than any other because it does a disservice to our American Troops not to and it is so hypocritical.

By deanrddAugust 5, 2008 - 8:20pmI look at it this way.
Obama is either completely full of shit, or he is intelligent enough to understand the degree of information control by the fascist propaganda machine. As I sit in the Bible belt tonight, in the armpit of Redneck, USA, I find that the hotel I am forced to stay at offers neither MSNBC or Comedy Central as channel options. They do offer Fox and Fox II, aka CNN.
He has no option to fight this but to tone down the progressive rhetoric to win ignorant independents only getting their information from it.
The other side of the coin is he played the progressive card in the primary when he saw the responses Edwards was getting from it in order to win the primary, which was won by an influx of fed up real Democrats that realize Pelosi is a neocon whore and criminal co-conspirator and understand the DLC stands for Disgusting (corporate) Lackey Council.
Only time will tell.

By AntillectualAugust 5, 2008 - 9:33pm...Truth, Justice and the American Way!
I'm a great believer in the healing power of acknowledging our transgressions and seeking forgiveness. The idea of a Truth and Reconciliation for high-crimes against Americans and others makes more sense than any other path to resolution; in fact, I've been blogging that idea since early spring.
What I fear is that many Americans (spelled y-a-h-o-o-s) don't want the truth; many Americans would rather sit with their illusions and delusions of American supremacy. Even so, we need to address these crimes without having the government grind to a halt. That will require a creative solution that's out-of-the-box. The Obama Group can do that.
Obama should not consume his first or second term bringing the Bush Gang to justice: there's too much at stake in other sectors of our society. Perhaps justice will begin to prevail as Republican after Republican topples like dominoes in November. And perhaps, miracle of miracles, the solid-majority Democrats will acquire a backbone. Is this too much to hope for?

I hope that KFC has access to the electricity and clean running water that most everyone in Iraq doesn't have. I have to wonder whether Iraqi's are going to come up with the cash to actually buy this shit or want to in the first place. And who the hell is crazy enough to work the drive through?
If this is the gold standard of progress in Iraq, I will be impressed when they have Ruth Criss Steakhouse in Tikrit, and even more impressed when Superchunk and Chunky, Jr tear themselves away from "the golden microphone" and Fox, respectively, to actually sit their pansy little fat asses down to chow down there.

By Pookie2112August 6, 2008 - 10:32amDo you care? No.
So you claim to know what is going on. In 2004, there were 1.4 million Christians in Iraq. Now there are about 700,000. That is approx half. Where are they? Where did they do? Do you give a shit for a few Christians?
Take a look at the Iraq Constitution. NOTE: When they say, "multiethnic, multi-religious and multi-sect", they clearly mean "within" Islam. There is no room for Christianity in Iraq, even though the Christian religion has been in Iraq since the beginning OF the Christian Religion. Supporters of Bush, meaning people like you, have been the death of the Christian religion in Iraq. Do you care? No. Do you give a shit? No. Do you care it's NOT democracy? No. You only care that you support Bush. Do you hold his picture with the bathroom door locked and the water running? Yes.
Article (2):
1st — Islam is the official religion of the state and is a basic source of legislation:
(a) No law can be passed that contradicts the undisputed rules of Islam.

The last I heard, only about a thousand Iraq Christians (I think the number is closer to 600) have been allowed to come here. And for two reasons:
First - Bush told the Iraqi Christians he wouldn't help them because he couldn't afford to show favoritism.
Second - Bush wants to maintain the illusion of diversity at least until he gets out of office.
Bush sees human beings as chess pieces. Like that rapper said, "Bush doesn't care about black people". The truth is that Bush doesn't care about anyone other than other Bushes.

By MichtouAugust 7, 2008 - 9:55amComing to the USA
The problem is no one knows how many have been killed. Many women and girls have been kidnapped and forced to become Muslim brides. This is a concerted effort to wipe out the Christians and the Christian faith in Iraq.
At one time, the Republicans were known as the party of ideas. Since it's been hijacked by the fundagelicals, it has become of party of morons. Many will say, "I don't see any problem with Iraq writing Islam into their constitution as the National Religion. It's a Muslim country, why not?" They have become so incurious, they have lost the ability to see that if thousands of our children were killed and tens of thousands crippled to create a democracy in Iraq, then it should BE a democracy. They rail about fundamentalist Islamo-Facists, but are so blind and stupid they can't see that what we have created is a fundamentalist Islamo-Facist state.
These same people believe religion should be "forced" in this country and science replaced with mysticism and the occult. They are not taking care of the US, the US is taking care of them. No technology, no inventions, no discoveries of any kind have come from the fundagelicals since they have seized power. Art, music, literature, their contribution is tiny.
The worst is this disaster in Iraq. They endlessly say the "surge" has worked. Worked to do what???? Not one can answer that question.
I will tell you is going to happen. After the US leaves, Iraq will kick all the oil companies out. Then they will turn their attention to the remaining Christians and destroy them, whether to chase them out or kill them outright.
Then Iraq will fall into an endless cycle of religious battles until the people decides it stops. They have to decide their own fate. Even if that is living in mud huts and drinking pee water. It has to come from them.
It is so obvious. Other Middle East countries, the first chance they got at voting, voted in Hezbollah and Ha-mas. That is their mindset.

By deanrddAugust 7, 2008 - 12:36pmWill the real antichrist please stand up?
I will add some comments about the "antichrist" issue. According to the Futurists, the "antichrist" will be assassinated and revived before reassuming control, half way through the tribulation. The only way for a fundie to find out if Obama is really the antichrist... well use your imagination.
I will also add that the antichrist will claim devine authority. Can anyone think of a recent and/or current nation leader that implied that his ascension to rule was somehow influenced by divinity and that his actions are influenced if not dictated by divinity?
Can anyone think of a recent and/or current nation leader that implies that his actions are associated, perhaps in some fashion, with prophecies within the Bible, using this premise to alter the very substance of Christianity from the followers of the "Prince of Peace" to the followers of the "King of War", carrying out a claimed crusade at the behest of the aforementioned Divine One ie) someone that misrepresents themselves while trying to achieve this deception via the false religion of a warmongering Jesus?
Can anyone think of a recent or current nation leader that promotes false peace by saying that "when we say war, we mean peace?" Who also said "sometimes money trumps peace?"
Can anyone think of any nation leader that might be working towards rebuilding the temple in Israel from which to occupy the temple and rule from it?
Can anyone think of a recent or current leader that might be working counterfeit miracles and signs or doing all kinds of evil?
Is anyone experiencing a "mystery of lawlessness?"

By f u bush2August 5, 2008 - 11:40pmYo, fu Bush2. Fuck you
Yo, fu Bush2. Fuck you nigger!... You like that shit do you? You like seeing American bodies hanging ...mutilated by scum, do you? Ladies and gentleman, this is the face of DemQaida...aka...the democrat part of the United States. Had they backed the President in this war from the start and not given aid and comfort to the enemy during the early stages of the war, this conflict would have been over long ago. Thanks fu bush2 for this campaign poster. I will see that it goes to good use. No way your messiah can win this election when this is his face.

By bebeholmesAugust 6, 2008 - 8:43amThe war was based on lies
as normal Americans now know. Only you uneducated 20% still support it. I would like to see anti american scum like you charged with treason, have your assets seized, and have you sent out of the country. Remember, in a few months you will be a powerless minority in this country and true Americans are going to want to find people to blame this disaster on. Watch your back, Vichy!

Is that even if McBush steals this one, he'll be lamer than Daffy Duck with rickets on the day he's inaugurated. As long as the soon-to-be much bigger Dem majority in Congress grows some balls.

By LiberalIconoclastAugust 6, 2008 - 1:18pmMost likely McCain will win
since young people dont vote Obama will have a tough time. I am sure a new fad has taken over. Obama is so last spring. The congress will have much larger majorities of Dems despite the drag at the top of the ticket.

It's still a free country, despite what Chimpy and Billary tried to do to it. You're free to spout your reich-wing drivel, I'm free to read it or ignore it as I see fit.

Thanks, Pappy! I'm flattered you'd think of me on something that has nothing to do with me ... I think you're kinda sweet on me, Pappy!
Now, I know you were referring to the baseless fact that you think I'm African-American ... I haven't a clue as to where you got that idea but you'd be surprised to know that your summation of me is ... incorrect! WAY incorrect!!
